I'm Mike from Yorkshire UK and this is intended to be a Vinyl Community VC channel. I've been collecting and listening to vinyl for many years. In the early 1970s I got into Prog Rock and later Punk, Reggae and World Music. All these interests have stayed with me over the years but I'm always on the look out for new music.

Hi Mike, some brilliant choices there! Especially The Au Pairs, fantastic band! Were they a Leeds band? Wish I’d seen them live, a bit before my time. Hollie Cook also, agree, not enough reggae on the VC, and nice to see Françoise Hardy get a mention too. Icon of cool and a really interesting person who refused to succumb to her celebrity status. But so pleased to see you show the wonderful Jane Weaver ! Seen her live and met after the shows, she’s so talented. I used to live in Mirfield for a few years. And I loved the Brudenell, I once interviewed Johnny Marr there! That’s another story. I moved down from Glasgow and used to go on my own to loads of gigs, because I didn’t know anybody in the area who shared my music taste. Such a great venue. I now live in France and saw Jane play in a venue near Lyon a couple of years ago. We chatted after the gig and she remembered me from the last time we met. So cool. The new album is a belter ! I produce a monthly radio show for a mate from Bradford who’s now a composer and music producer. It’s for a station based in LA. I did a tribute to Françoise in the May edition. Here’s a link if you fancy a listen. www.dublab.com/archive/benson-taylor-tuscan-junk-food-05-21-24 Anyway, sorry for rambling on! It was just so good to see someone trumpeting Jane’s work. All the best Mike.
If you rubbed hard enough you were supposed to smell the rubber from the tyre. I couldn't could you?
No I didn't smell anything
@@mikevinylspiral Perhaps it dissipated over time but mine was only a couple of years old.
The Radiators looks interesting ! Stiff Little Fingers "Now Then" is a good find as well.. Change is good ! Nice records, Mike 😉
Hi JT The radiators are really good first wave of Punk.
I'd love to pick up one of theirs.. We'll see ! I'll stream some Radiators on my lunch break 👍
I listened, and remember now ! From Dublin, and before Stiff Little Fingers up in Belfast, I think.. Radiators were first on the scene.. I'm pretty sure.
Hi Mike, Looks like a fruitful visit to the fair. I have duplicates of the Wedding Present singles Nos 1,2,3,4 and 6 so if any of those correspond with gaps in your collection let me know and I can send them your way. Other notable Akron natives are Chrissy Hynde and Lux Interior and the Black Keys I think were also formed there. Andy
Hi Andy, I really should have mentioned Chrissie Hynde. The Wedding Present I need are 1,4,5 &6. You've already been very generous to me. You'll have to let me know what you're looking for so I can keep an eye out at the record fairs. Cheers Mike
@@mikevinylspiral Hi Mike, I think I may also have a duplicate of 5 as well. Is there a way to DM or email you via TH-cam? Andy
@@andygladwin2049 there's an email address in my channel description. Mike
@@mikevinylspiral Hi Mike, I’ve got that now thanks. Couldn’t see it when logged on to the iPad but available when viewing on a laptop for some reason. Andy
@@andygladwin2049 You get a different view on some mobile apps.
Totally agree on Stiff Little Fingers. I loved the power they put into their music. Now Then is a wonderful album. You had a very successful record fair Mike
Great pickups Mike....the B-side of Cardiac Arrest (In The City) is a Madness fave of mine. To the best of my knowledge, it was going to be released as a single but for some reason it never was but it appeared on their first greatest hits album. It was released as an A-side in Japan and was used to advertise Honda cars. I've got the Japanese 7" single 👍 I didn't do too bad at the carboot sale today, came home with a few singles and a couple of albums. I also came across a Wedding Present album today,if memory serves me right it was called "Tommy" ??? Does that mean anything to you ???
Hi Nick, I've decided I need more Madness singles, I picked up copies of Grey Day and Shut Up along with Cardiac Arrest. Tommy is an early compilation album of Wedding Present's first four singles and some BBC sessions. They rerecorded it as Tommy 30 a couple of years ago. Definitely worth picking up. Look forward to seeing your car boot finds. Cheers Mate
@@mikevinylspiral Grey Day and shut up are fantastic tunes,in fact I think they're both massively underrated 👍👍👍
Laura Nyro has been in my family since 1969 ! My older sister would spin it constantly, " Eli And The Thirteenth Confession" Listen to " Lu" and " Stoned Soul Picnic" .. Lu's my very favorite, and you should be hooked ! Good suggestion by Michael.. Yeah.. your missing 13th Confession, I hope you can find a copy around. It's her best, IMHO 🎵
Hi JT. After Michael persuaded me to check out Laura Nyro "Thirteenth confession" was the first album I listened to. I agree it's really good. I'll be on the look out for more of her albums.
Nice ! Im glad you know the record.. Lu really swings and Laura has an amazing vocal range, enjoy !
I think Christmas & The Beads of Sweat will grow on you. It was Dogpatch that was my breakthrough with her. Thanks for the shoutout.
I'm not sure which is my favourite yet, but I've been listening to her quite a lot recently.
Nina Hagen is the daughter of the famous DDR-actrice Eva Marie Hagen (Berliner Ensemble, Bert Brecht), who later on became life companion of the controversial and famous singer-songwriter Wolf Biermann.
Thanks very much for this information. I always like to know a little about the artists I listen to.
@@mikevinylspiral And a "fun fact": I 1999 Nina Hagen sang and acted in Dreigroschenoper (Three penny opera) at her mothers old theater Berliner Ensemble. So the cirkle closes at one point...
Great selection of Singles there Mike. Would love that Bow Wow Wow. I got the Three of a Kind show (w. Lenny Henry) and Girld On Top on DVD. And one of Tracey’s albums with that song on it on vinyl from back in the day. Kirsty MacColl writing and Paul McCartney showing up in a cameo for the video of They Don’t Know. I loved her short music career 😊 Hope you are having a lovely summer Mike. Cheers from Morten
Hi Morten. I forgot to mention Kirsty MacColl and Paul McCartney. And thanks for reminding me about Girls On Top, a really funny all female sitcom. Cheers Mike
@@mikevinylspiral The female The Young Ones 😄
You did well there Mike with some very interesting singles that I especially enjoyed. Cheers Dale
Cheers Dale
Tracy Ullman’s show was a comedy sketch show if I remember correctly. Simpsons shorts were shown between skits. A nice batch of 7”s. Rubber City Rebels and the Waitresses got radio airplay in LA.
Hi Ritchie, the Akron compilation was my favourite buy this month.
Mike, l haven't seen that Akron album for years. I used to have that😂 Great pick ups once again.
I'd not seen that comp for a very long time either so it had to come home with me😅
I love "They Don't Know"!
It's a great song.
Nice pick ups mike 👍
Fantastic package from Mike, very thoughtful. I love that JP Dandelion label, classic JP. Mike
Cheers Mike. I was really chuffed with this lot.
Mike really supplied you with a lot of interesting music. I do know of Nero but never listened to her. Most of these signers I don’t know, enjoy.
This is completely awesome!
I know. I'm very lucky. Mike's a great bloke.
What a haul. I love Laura Nyro.
Cheers Alan. It made ny day.
What a lovely gift. I like what I’ve heard of Laura Nyro. That Bridget St John album is fantastic… she was a contemporary of Nick Drake and John Martyn. Really really nice stuff! Happy listening 🙂
Yeah, really nice stuff. The Bridget St John is superb.
Sweet 👍
I'm glad you liked most of them. The Stevie one you can pass on or trade l suppose. You're very welcome my friend, Enjoy.
I'll give the Stevie Nix album a few more listens before I decide. But the other 9 you sent me are pure gold 👍👍👍
Great female overview Mike! I am a huge Laura Nyro fan, and showed the Stoned Soul Picnic CD compilation (in my Female Thread video) that came out in 1997 right before she passed away. Mentioned how if people are unfamiliar with her to start there. Christmas and the Beads of Sweat and Gonna Take A Miracle are both fantastic, and the whole catalog is worth owning. Jack at Vinyl Martini also showed some Laura Nyro on his female thread response. A nod to Holly Vincent too! Well done! Ed😎
Thanks for watching Ed. From knowing virtually nothing about Laura Nyro a few months ago I too have become a huge fan.
Well done showing newer groups. Lot of great music coming out. I have more female artist from newer groups than I do groups pre1990. I also have found a love for a lot of the newer female country singers
I agree Steve. Have you heard "Hurray For The Riff Raff" really nice female fronted Americana.
I'm happy to see Austra! Sad news about Françoise Hardy. Epic video!
Cheers Brian
Great entry Mike. I’m sure you’d get no head shaking from the band members (not having heard how a couple of those sirnames are pronounced I wouldn’t know… One of the danes sounds like she had an italian parent. Btw, a woolen hat in Norway is called a Lue. In Denmark, a Hue (sounds like who-eh). In Swedish it’s Mössa. Never heard of any of those Scandinavians. Or the nordic Icelander. I’m a crap Scandivegian VC’er… sorry. Splendid as always Mike.
Hi Morten. Thanks for watching as always. And now if I find myself in Scandinavia without a woollen hat I know what to ask for. Cheers Mike
Nice selection Mike and a good few I’ve not heard of. The Au Pairs are a band that are on my radar but I’ve never actually listened to… that’s a fantastic album cover. I really like Francoise Hardy and need to get some of her records. What album would you recommend to start on? Cheers, Jack
Hello Jack. Francoise Hardy's debut album is a good place to start. All of the first 5 albums are official self titled. But it's often called "Tous Les Garcons et les Files" I also really like her 1966 album called Francoise or sometimes "la maison ou j'ai grandi". If you want to sample her later stuff try "Gin Tonic". Cheers Mike
Hi Mike, a few names in there I’m not familiar with that I’m now going to have to check out. I was thinking about that Au Pairs album earlier today and if PC31 liked the Delta 5 album how he would probably also like that album as well. On the subject of female artists I listened to Fiona Apple’s Fetch the Bolt Cutters this evening for the first time in about a year and was reminded what an extraordinarily good album it is. Andy
Hi Andy. I'm not that familiar with Fiona Apple. Didn't she have an album with a really long title? I'll give her a listen.
Yes, the Idler Wheel…..I think she may be one of those Marmite artists but she is definitely worth exploring. Andy
Mike - what a great thread entry, and thank you for taking the time to make it! I am really enjoying seeing what folks are sharing, and just about all of your selections were new artists to me. Jane Weaver, Holly Cook and Au Pairs - will be checking those out. All about being exposed to new music and seeing what other folks are passionate about, and sharing their stories. Appreciate the channel mention, have subbed, and looking forward to checking out your video library. Thanks! 😎🎶🎸🎤
Thanks Ed, I'll be catching up with your other videos 👍
I like the look of that album, The Constant Spectacle.
It's a really nice album. One of her best.
I’ve not heard of Austra. I’ll give them a listen. I’d like to check out that Danish band, too. What’s their name? Baby in Vain?
That's right Baby In Vain
Just watched Ber Mike’s thread, and glad you got your thumb out mate. Of course I have to find out about a Canadian artist from a chap in Leeds 🤔😁. Nice response Mike. Cheers.
Hello Jack, I think you'd like Austra.
I love the joy on your face when talking about Jane Weaver, that sounds like a great double gig experience within a few days of one another. Seeing solo then with band must have been great. Funnily enough I hadn’t heard of Jane until a good friend of mine said did I want to see her, about a month ago. I didn’t 🤷🏻♂️🤬 He also loves her and I missed it. Obviously a massive regret now!! I’ll get her new album and get into Jane-catch up mode. Problem not doing these threads straight away is between you and two others you have wiped out all of the women I had planned 😂😂 My own fault for procrastination! Lovely picks Mike as usual. Mike
Great response Mike, l nearly chose the AuPairs. Hollie Cook good call. I forgot to mention the originator 😮 had to edit the title 😂
Mike, come on mate. You must have. 500 women in your collection😂 Can't believe you missed Jane Weaver😢 l've missed out on bands l now love because l'd never heard of them then.😂
Come on Mike! That's a poor excuse. As Mike says "you must have 500 women in your collection." 😂 Procrastination is not a good thing. I missed out on the Lovely Eggs current tour because I was slow off the mark.😭
@@mikevinylspiral Mike, The Lovely Eggs are at the Parish in Huddersfield Friday 23rd Aug. Be there or be square! Andy
Antmania's Dave Myers is the recently deceased Dave Myers of Hairy Bikers fame. You're not wrong though, it is dreadful!
HI Steve I had no idea it was a Hairy Biker.
@@mikevinylspiral apparently he was a make-up artist in his younger days and had worked with Adam
Hi 👋 Good lot of 45 rpm singles. I always remember that song I hear you Knocking by Dave Edmunds back in 1970 / 71. It's such a cool song. 😊
Hi Carl, That was one of the first singles I ever bought. And I still have it.
Picked up my copy of the Anja Huwe album today - oxblood vinyl!
It's a great album. Enjoy. Cheers Mike
I agree 100% that reggae does not get talked about enough in the VC. Great choices and very interesting tidbits - thanks for sharing.
Thanks very much for watching and for the sub. I'll try and show a bit more reggae on my channel in future. Cheers Mike
@@mikevinylspiral I'll try to do the same on my channel, I need to practice what I'm preaching. 👍
Cool stuff Mike. I got given a reissue of that slated album a few years back and quite enjoy it. Good luck in the contest.
Cheers Jason. You can never go wrong with Slade at a party. Cheers Mike
If you could get Mike to bring his Kinks tribute band, then you would have the party of the year! Great entry! Cheers, Gary

Wharf Chambers! I was thinking Leeds Arena😁
@@mikevinylspiral 🤣
Just finished a couple of heavy nightshifts, so great to see your entry this morning Mike! An eclectic selection as always! I’ve heard a little of ISM and believe they’re a really good live band too. Some live music is a great shout and hard to beat the Kinks 👌 Cheers, Jack
Cheers Jack. Good luck with your push to 500👍
Any album with a title Be Calm sounds perfect to me Mike. I think I need that one right now
Hi Steve, Morcheeba are a really underrated band imo

Fantastic, we’re on our way Mike! Let’s get the party started!! 🎉😁🎸 Another brilliant batch of records, and yes, our tastes are so similar. Noddy and the Boys….. of course. Love the idea of Morcheeba for the morning after chill 😎 Mike

Hi Mike! I only knew Slade from those 3 records shown! Great party guests!
Looks like I'll be doing this on Saturday....I did think of SLADE myself Mike 👍👍👍
Slade should be compulsory at all parties 😂
Hi Mike, good to hear a shout out for more reggae. I have always been partial to a a bit a reggae, much to the amusement of my contemporaries. My gateway was the Reggae Sun Splash concert footage Channel 4 used to show on Friday nights back in the early 80’s, Burning Spear, Yellow Man, Eek A Mouse etc. This week I’ve 🎉had Dillinger’s CB200 in the listening pile along with last years collection of Lee Scratch Perry produced tracks. Interesting to hear your comments on the VC post retirement. That chimed with me as although not retired (unfortunately) I’ve been working from home for the last 3 years. I certainly don’t miss having to go into the office everyday but I do miss all the non-work conversations and interactions that happened daily with colleagues. Although I’m still meeting with people every day virtually via Teams or Zoom it is nearly always entirely work focused and much less of the ‘other stuff’ that builds relationships. Like you I found that the VC (even as just a watcher and occasional commentator) has been a great way to interact with like minded folks that I would never had met previously, and a great stimulator. Another positive of the home working has been much more contact with my old friends who are scattered around the country via WhatsApp Groups and Teams catch ups and making to effort to meet up physically and do things (one of which coincidently was a visit to Leeds Record Fair a few months back). It seems ultimately we are seeking the same things and I’m very glad I stumbled across the VC a couple of years back. Andy
Hi Andy. We definitely need more reggae in the VC. I know what you mean about working from home and missing the non-work conversations. Have you thought about coming up on the Thursday Livestream. All you have to do is click on the link, and we'd love to chat with you. And if your thinking about going to another Leeds Record Fair let me know and we can meet up. Cheers Mike
@@mikevinylspiral Hi Mike, since you brought the Thursday livestream to my attention I’ve been a regular watcher. I assumed as I don’t have a channel coming up would be a bit like gate crashing but if Ian is OK I wouldn’t be averse to saying hello. It’s been almost a year since the last Leeds record fair so another visit could be on the cards. I’ll give you the heads up on the next visit. Gig wise I think I mentioned I’m at the Brudenell on 16 Oct to see Bodega and the 02 Academy on the 5 Oct to see the Wedding Present. Andy
@@andygladwin2049 Just ask in the gallery if it's ok and Iain will certainly say it is. I won't be at either of those gigs. Unfortunately I've got something else on 5 Oct.
I was really digging the sounds you were throwing out on that interesting violin type instruments. Practice makes perfect Mike. I think curry is the National food of the UK.
