New Columbia celebrates the old territory of Columbia that was governed by the Honorable Hudson Bay Company before the 1846 Border Treaty. It was the direct predecessor of modern British Columbia.
Gerald Soon’s presentation on the Soon Family connection to Vancouver History.
Gerald is a third generation Chinese Canadian. An educator, he was worked at all levels of schooling, including teaching a course in the Faculty of Education as a sessional instructor at UBC, and retired after a number of years as an elementary school principal.
Gerald is keenly interested in the history of the Chinese in BC, and has presented to his grandchildren’s teachers classes about the Paper Trail, focusing on the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1923 and the resulting documentation of the Chinese community.
His involvement with Transcribimus has helped him to discover, learn and share more about the Chinese Canadian story.

The official spelling of most of these words has changed since the time of this recording, ("hilu" instead of "Halo", for example), and there are no capitalized letters in chinook wawa, but spelling is less important than pronunciation and being understood. It is wonderful that this historic recording is made available to everyone!
So for cook you can use mamook muckamuck and not mamook piah? Is that because it was just kind of prepared without heat, or does that matter?
Just get rid of Chinook Jargon, it has no place in modern coast Salish society, it is no longer needed for trade either, let it die
I hope to one day learn and become fluent in Yama/Mobilian Jargon and bring it back to my family and region like Chinuuk Wawa has been brought back over the last 15 years. Thank you for making and sharing this!

OMG, I think i REMEMBER some of these words from my youth. I was adopted at age 8 into a white family in 1978 after my mother passed in 1976. Always felt lost cuz i didnt know my family history. This is sooo strange a feeling right now!!!
