How cool is that … such a good memory!!!
Love these retro tramping films. Keep them coming
I enjoyed this bringing back memories of when i worked for government railways in 1976.
I setup and calibrated the VHF/UHF telecoms systems on these loco's during the late 1980's. Local techs and Loco staff had expertly installed the radios wiring and antennae prior to my efforts. Intense times, I was on my own, with my nous and skinned knuckles, that was how it was done back in the day. Once the task was completed the Loco Engineers invited me to their Friday drinks and surprise surprise I won the meat raffle, A huge carton of meat weighing about 15kg's, it was only when I unpacked the meat at home that I discovered a railway wagon coupling hook of about 10-12 Kg's nestled under the meat. Happy non pc days when taking the piss was considered part of the waft and weft of life. I almost pissed myself laughing when I discovered the deception.
I still miss driving trains
This was the trip that the ol lady sprained her ankle and we needed help getting the car back up the hill after she abandoned it to find help as we didn't get back to the roaring Meg untill after dark. The next time we went there was where your friend got his car stolen and ritten off after he left his keys at the first hut.
Yes and she said she nearly fell down the cliff into the Otaki river. She said it was so dark that she was being guided by the fence on her right and just before she reached a slip under the fence a bolt of lightning lit up the gap. Lucky her. That next trip from Otaki Forks was when a bloke convinced Grant to leave the keys with him so he could look after the car. What a con.
On NZ diesels are both of the cab doors on the left side?
But our NZR Team of, Caroline Cornwall, Abe Knap, Ray Hawkins and Dave Stewart gave it a good shot. West Coast coal miner Robin Hughes had a crack at the world record for shovelling half a ton of coal, sadly he failed by only two seconds to take the record. Info from staff news Dec 1979, issued by General Managers Office, New Zealand Railways, Wellington.👍
🥰👍
Those dreams you followed Roly made you one of the kindest in inspirational people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. While most of 23 Carlisle Street was completed by the time I joined NZR. Many a time as I climbed the bank into Cambridge street on a weekend from the shunting yards to head home to our railway house, I would often hear the neighbourhood kids expressing delight in riding your fantastic rail setup. Seeing my little daughter in video two, cementing her place in a wagon for a trip around your home railway reminded me of precious days long since passed. Thanks for the memories Roly, take care Sir, was a real pleasure knowing you.😊👍
Trains were always a passion of mine, nice to hear your kind comments.
Hi Roland, I dont know if you will see this but I was wondering if you knew my Dad Barry Floyd. I have photo's in an old album of his with a few of them having the name "Rolly" attached. I know there easily could be others with the name but thought if it is you, you may be interested to see them.
Hi Warren, yes I knew your Dad "Barry", he was my very first Driver once we moved to the Milson Yard complex. He was a very nice chap. That would have been about 1965. I was shocked to hear he had died, after I came back to the job in the 1970's. Later I worked with your Uncle Ray, we were both Shunters in the Milson Yard and both of us had worked as Farm Fencing Contractors in the early 1970's. I would indeed like to see the photos, thankyou for the offer. My contact address is rbpofnelson.nz@xtra.co.nz
Interesting.. this locomotive seems to reuse engine noises from the IHH Class 08. (no, not the RSC one) This route also seems to have some old IHH locos in here too from what I can tell on the steam page, but I'm not sure.
👍
Hi Kev, Gosh its all so long ago.
@@rolandpenhall4526 Yes Mate, all so long ago. I been looking through the few photos from them days, found a shot taken from light tower in Shunting yard, as far as I dared to climb looking down North End toward shunters hut. A couple of images of Silver Fern Railcar that was coming into yard after hitting the stock truck near Feilding. One of 'Ivannoe' parked up near NTR Shed, and one of a shunters wagon slightly bent, buckled and NTR after a slight in yard blue. Surprise of all I found a copy of 'Staff News' December of 1979, about 'Operation Rose City', with my then little daughter on front cover sitting in driver's seat of a DA. Yes great Memories Rolly, of the past before leaving for Qld. Take Care Mate and Thanks for those Memories.👍👍 Do you still run ya train around the outside of the house? The kids use to love it🙂👍

Doing this trip tomorrow, and most weeks actually, from Waikanae. Interesting to see how it was back in the day. I miss the old British Mk2 coaches. The new ones are rubbish! Less room, less storage, less comfortable, non vestibule doors. Just awful.
That's a bit sad, but enjoy the scenery and other passengers.
I thought I was going to see the layout you did.
Aha, yes I see what you would be expecting. I just rewatched it and I can see what you mean, the beginning sounds like you would see the whole rail network. If I can at some time, take another look. I do think I still have access to a save of the route.

All Good, so many people enjoy the outdoors and maybe it may be an encouragement to some who are not so sure if they should give it a go. 😊
LOVE this video... Thanks for sharing... Brings back great memories of walking the track in my childhood. I only walked in via the creek route. The track from Wharite that you took looks much more challenging.
Thanks for that. Yes much more of a challenge, but the first time I tried coming in from the creek, I missed the track and continued to the top via the right side of the creek. Now that was a shocking bush crash. First managing to get under the "Matagouri bushes" then as the elevation increased they became smaller and we had to climb over them. 😢

Nice shame there aren't many New Zealand mods even 4 years after there is still only the DL class on the workshop. Out of interest did you use the GX industry mod to add a steel mill to the map because the forestry chain withers off after a couple of years as there is no end product being produced at the tool factory.
Hi thanks for your comment. I don't believe I used the GX industry mod. But thanks for the information.
That rusty track has been left unused for so long now that it has been cover by ballast over time and only just now raised back up

Roland, could I please use a few clips of your footage for a short homemade youtube video?
Hi you certainly can make use of my footage. Just one thing can you let me know when you have it completed, as I would be interested in seeing your footage.
@@rolandpenhall4526 Thanks very much Roland! Nothing fancy, but happy to show you the end result. I'm fascinated with this era of NZ (too young to understand at the time) so I've been putting these little videos together from bits of footage found to help understand why and how things changed the way they did (with a bit creative licence thrown in).
Hi Roland... this is sort of what I had in mind.. I just wanted to show a little bit of the history and along with your footage, the clip of Ian Turner was a great find. Being on a shunter in Huntly
@@robertalexander9979Hi I hadn't noticed your reply from 2 months ago until just now. Why I asked was because I new a Robert (Bob) Alexander when we were both "Shunters" in the Milson Marshalling Yard in Palmerston North in the 1980s. You are obviously not him as he would be at least IMO about 20 years older than yourself. Glad you enjoyed the video. Nowadays I just play Railway games.
Great video and loved the commentary which was quite funny at times. My dad was a loco engineer for NZ Rail his whole life. He would have loved this video!
Thanks for the glowing comments. Glad you enjoyed it.

recently saw loco 30232 in the workshops in hutt! also love these classic videos! :) (the loco u were taking back to Palmy)
Talk about the perfect office. 😮😅.
Cool, but I guess the hardest audience is the daughter of the farmer who ran the dairy farm where the train was being shunted!! I remember those trains well - from mid-1963 when we took over that farm. And avoiding the trains running into our cows that crossed the tracks twice daily. So in case anyone thinks otherwise, we didn't also make them swim to the cowshed. Simply, the terrain is a bit flattened in the video in other words. I'll have to share some more farm aerial photos with you Roland. Lots of memories of that era. Good to see it all either way 🙂
Thanks Val, I did think the landscaping, needed a bit more drastic work. I will see if I can do a bit more. Looking forward to some more photos. It appears the farm went close to Humes Pipes siding, if so do you happen to have any photos of that area?
@@rolandpenhall4526 Yes. The farm backed on to Hume Pipes and various other stopping points. The biscuit factory there (Griffins ?) was also a train stopping point just before reaching Humes (from our direction, but the opposite side of the tracks). To that one you could add a whole swarm of Clyde Crescent kids stealing biscuits from it and taking them across to our hayshed to eat them. Dad did quite well out of snacks found abandoned in the hayshed - then my younger brothers tried the same trick and Dad went and paid for what they had pinched. He wasn't impressed. I've also (several weeks ago) done research on the fuel depots - which I remember extremely well from about 1960 before we moved to the Napier Road farm. Prior to that we had gone to Roslyn School. Shunting happened then as school finished for the day - which was crazy
@@valburr9595 Oh I do recall shunting all of those sidings as a shunter in the mid 1970's until the early 1980's. Then there was an extra siding for a grain company on the same side as the biscuit company which I believe was Aulsbrooks, at that time. Yes there was a restriction put on for shunting those petrol sidings and Vibrapak siding, all close to the Tremain Avenue railway crossing.
@@rolandpenhall4526 Aulsebrooks (just had to check spelling) sounds right. I'll have to ask my brother. Actually I think he owns their subsequent factory which also had a siding at one time. In 1987 I was involved with a protest to try to convince NZR (or whatever its name was at the time) to stop shunting over the road at 3:00pm when the kids were going home from Roslyn School. I remember that well
Brilliant 🚂
Thanks Marie and many thanks for arranging photos of the area from that era.
@@rolandpenhall4526 My pleasure 😊
IWAS A SHUNTER IN PALMERSTON NORTH IN 1960s IN 1968 WAS WHEN THE SOUTH ISLAND WENT TO DEISEL'S LOCOs I NEVER SAW A DJ IN PALMERSTON NORTH LOCO AT ALL SO ITS NOT IN 1960s
You did'nt notice my comment in the last paragraph. I worked in the Palmerston North loco branch from late 1963 until early 1966, and the only mainline Diesels were the Da. There were the Dsc started back during that time.
Have you reported it on the forums? Love your cab ride videos by the way.
Someone came up with the answer to my problem. Quote: "Stupid question (probably) but you don't have a section of track lain below the terrain do you? Have you looked under and gotten to the bottom of the chasm? I've had rogue track half a mile in the air before now with no real clue how or when I got it there so it stands to reason there could be some half a mile below. It may be that the "snap to" tool is getting confused and snapping to that instead see. Just a thought anyway." End Quote He was right.
@@rolandpenhall4526 oh thats great, train sim can definitely have some weird moments at times!
nice video but why did the driver change from train to car? seems rediculous when we need to reducing the use of cars
Basically it came down to Drivers hours which I think were a maximum of 10 hours IIRC. If a crew were going to exceed that time then a fresh crew would be dispatched by car to relieve them. All part of safety for drivers of Transport vehicles.
Commentary drawl fucking boring. FFS
