Strickland’s is the best ice cream around here, Swensons is unbeatable, and the best fried chicken anywhere is Barberton Ohio, any of the places, can’t go wrong.

I lived in Akron for a couple years and just moved away a few months ago. I'll be completely honest. I thought Swenson's was super overrated. When I moved to Akron all I heard was Swenson's this and Swenson's that. I had it few times and was NOT impressed. I honestly would have rather had McDonalds. But again, I'm not from Akron and moved there at 40. But i get it. I'm originally from southern Ohio and grew up eating Skyline Chili. I personally love it but I know many people in Northeast Ohio gave me crazy looks when i talked about how much I loved it.
I think it’s definitely one of those local things that you get a little attached to so I can understand that for sure! I will say the past several years it hasn’t been as good as it was before. They made some changes and it has lost some local attention I think. I’ve only had skyline chilli a few times and didn’t mind it, but it’s also been a while so I don’t recall it super well.
There's still an Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips in Cuyahoga Falls.
I have never had it but several people have recommended it so I’ll definitely have to check it out!

I still need to get out to Bobs Hamburg several people have recommended that and I’ve never been. Pav’s is always great, I believe they even have alcohol in some of their ice cream options which is a unique twist!
@@LIVINGINAKRON Bob’s is great and if you are a fan of root beer they make their own! I always make sure I take home a few bottles. And you are exactly right about Pav’s, they have their adult shakes. LOL
@@Brodie--lw6eb I’ll definitely have to go and give it a try, love some burgers and also when I do drink pop it’s always root beer so definitely have to try that! For Pavs I haven’t had their adult shakes yet I just always hear about them so going to have to add that to the list as well!

DON'T GO!!!! I grew up there, went back for a visit about two and a half years ago. It looks worse now then when I was a kid. It was a great place to grow up. It looks like East Cleveland now. Property values and the overall cost of living is cheap because no one wants to live there because of crime. Plus the winters are cold and long.
Swenson's is the best! I'm surprised and happy to see Dilly's on the list! My friend's dad actually owns it! He's a good guy!

I thank God I left Akron more than 50 years ago. I have missed more than fifteen thousand days of miserable Akron weather and have enjoyed my life in sunny Florida swimming and fishing
We have definitely seen quite a few people heading down to florida and Carolina’s for the better weather. I’m still enjoying all the seasons currently but I’m sure that will only last so long!
How do you like those insurance and tax bill? I went from paying 5k anually to over 15k between insurance and taxes. Thats almost someone's income. I am heading north now.
@@vickynoname9860 They need to mention the WATER and SEWER rates. Akron messed up years ago by not keeping their system updated, and now homeowners are footing a monthly disaster of a bill to pay for what the city never took care of. Our water bill has TRIPLED in the last ten years or so. This has nothing to do with consumption, just additional fees and assessments that we are burdened with to fix a failing infrastructure. Property taxes continue to go up, as well, in addition to poorly maintained roads and public schools that rank the lowest in the county.
I’m from Florida, half of our year is miserably hot and humid.
I wouldn't live anywhere that DOESN'T have a winter. I've been to Florida, aside from the beaches it is flat and humid. Not a place I'd want to live 365 days a year, no way.

How about Sky-Way Drive In out on West Market St. I worked there as curb boy in 1969-70 and their burgers, onion rings and fountain sodas were tops! We had a rivalry going at the time of who's food was better Sky-Way's or Swenson's.

Honestly I’m not sure! I know it’s still popular down in the Cincinnati area but I haven’t even though of the few that were around here. I’ll have to look into them.

It’s the homemade sauce, separates it even though I did just find my new number one wing spot last weekend.
Positives: mid-size city with small town feel, relatively friendly population, diversity. Cons: grumpy lifers (no one is keeping you here!), drivers are dangerous, off-road, illegal bikes & 4-wheelers on city streets. Still remain optimistic!!!

Swennys is my FAVORITE! i live out in the country now and I'm so glad there is one fairly close Hamburger Station is foul. I went to the one in C. Falls and it was the dirtiest restaurant one ever been to.
Hands down the best! Dang that’s a bummer for the hamburger station I have gone to the one in Ellet only so can’t compare but every once in a while I do crave it!
@@LIVINGINAKRON don't go to the one in c falls then. The floor was dark and dirty with grease and whatever people tracked in. Grease coated walls, ceilings, and even the cobwebs were tacky with grease. That place hadn't been cleaned in, what seemed like, forever.

I appreciate the refreshing honesty! The biggest "Bliss" draw for me personally would be the wonderful Metroparks I've been learning about online! Really though, any of the cons mentioned here seems to be the same ones you'd find in ANY similar-sized U.S. City these days! The ONLY thing that is an absolute "no go" for me is where people are all detached from one another and are rude. Indianapolis Indiana was distinctly a hellscape of cold and surly people--at least when I stayed there for a couple days. Wondering if Akron generally has friendly, helpful and nice people...(Our host here seems to be good-hearted!👍😊)

Really excellent, quality video. Well done! Im happy to hear you mention there's good options for getting around town there. I don't have a car, and I like it that way, but would love to relocate to a new area from boring Northeastern Wisconsin. Akron area seems to be exceptional: interesting ( downtown, museums, college, ethnic restaurants), beautiful (Cuyahoga National Park) and overall very enticing! I'd be looking to rent a modestly-priced, small apartment. Thanks!

It's been 25 years since I've been in my hometown, Akron, and I've craved a SWENSON'S GALLEY BOY the entire time. If I EVER get back to Akron, guess where I'm heading first!

Hamburger Station hamburgers are second generation Thacker's hamburgers.
Never had those before, but have always enjoy hamburger station as a nice change of pace.
Back when I was living there in Akron Strickland's is the hottest place to go to it was every place to go to way back and it still is and even when I go back to visit and I hit all three so I see some things haven't changed
Stricklands is still the place to be! Every time banana comes back around I always make a stop!
Well I use I was born and raised in Akron and yeah the roads have always been f***** up and that's due to the snow and everything else in the weather so that's not that's not a no-brainer two yeah the schools yeah there and three the housing that is there if you want to live there and live conservatively but overall it's a nice place it's a lot Heritage and the parks are extremely there's a lot to do

Swenson's is the BEST in America! Born & raised in Akron in the 50's, I may be a bit prejudiced, but burgers don't get any better than Swenson's. YUM!!! I make several trips to Swenson's when I travel back to Akron to visit family. An honorable mention to Dilly's. Their food is great too, but my "go to" will always be Swenson's! Thanks for your video!
Their burgers are such an easy go to, the sauce and everything about it makes it a great greasy treat! I’m a sucker for their onion rings too, hopefully you’ll be back soon to enjoy some more of their burgers!
