I remember first hearing this recital when I was already in on 3rd year of Moscow conservatory. This very performance stunned me so much I could not talk for hours. Even though I became something very far from cellist, one of things I very regret is that I never had an opportunity to shake his hand or see him alive.

as much as I think Kogan is among the best to play concertos, he is just too forward and aggressive in these sonatas, needs a bit more subtlety. The pianist is the real star here.

While the performance is stunningly beautiful, I miss not hearing distinctly the dialogue between the cello and piano. When the piano is playing the melodic line, most of the time the cello sounds too loud for me. Perhaps the recording equipment was not placed in the best position. In terms of melodic balance, I prefer the interpretation by Daniel Barenboim and Jacqueline du Pré, or that of Han Na Chang and Sergio Tempo.

Been a fan of Harnoncourt's since about 1971 (or earlier). Heard his Concentus Musicus in Vienna in January 1973 and was blown away. Never disappointed in all those years since then. This performacne is magnificent!
