The Gar Spawn: Novel Observations of Longnose Gar Spawning in Floating Vegetation
The Gar Spawn: Novel Observations of Longnose Gar Spawning in Floating Vegetation is a short documentary I create to highlight a spectacular behavior. For just a few short days every year, Longnose Gar gather is a Florida spring and begin to spawn within large masses of floating vegetation.
I worked with fish biologists Dr. Ken Sulak and Dr. Steve Walsh to publish the observations in the journal Southeastern Naturalist. The article can be viewed here:
bioone.org/journals/southeastern-naturalist/volume-23/issue-4/058.023.0401/Spawning-within-Floating-Vegetation--Novel-Underwater-Observations-of-Egg/10.1656/058.023.0401.short
This project was supported by the Florida Springs Institute and Ikelite. Many thanks to the numerous people involved including Kate Schmid, Tedd Greenwald, Mary Ellen Flowers, Linda Dicker, Dr. Ken Sulak, Dr. Steve Walsh, and everyone at the Florida Springs Institute.

these kind of environments used to be common on the east coast of the united states they depend on clear water. as a result of the destruction of most of our oyster reefs that were fundamental in keeping the water clear our waters clouded in most of out estuaries causing the destruction of nearly 90 percent of out sea grass beds the reduction of biodiversity and dead zones as a result. restoration of these reefs are the only way to save these endangered habitats. cheers i hope you learned something today.
