07:50: Everybody's Hand
In this video, Feng takes you through a rare situation every Riichi Mahjong player faces-playing a bad hand. Bad hands happen only 5% of the time, but they can make or break your game if handled poorly. Many players fall into two traps: either playing too defensively or trying to force a win. In this tutorial, you'll learn how to balance attacking and defending when you're stuck with an unplayable hand.
Feng breaks down the example step by step, explaining key concepts like tile efficiency, managing risk, and not giving your opponent an advantage. You'll see how to navigate through hopeless hands, use strategic discards, and protect yourself from other players' dangerous moves. Whether it's recognizing potential Sanshoku or managing Yakuhai tiles, this video teaches you how to keep your options open while playing safe.

Improving your Riichi Mahjong skills with Sakigiri, Riichi/Dama, Score Distribution, Discard Reading

In this video, I dive into two key and often controversial topics in Mahjong strategy: Sakigiri and the decision between Riichi or Dama. In Riichi Mahjong, one-chance is often used as 1 of the defense strategy to beginners to identify safer than usual tiles. It might be a simple concept related to kabe (wall) but it is deeper than that. Most of us learn only 1 kind of one-chance but there are actually 2 kinds. To clarify, So we only conclude 4p is safe because he discarded 6p before 3p? If it was 3p before 6p then possibly he can have a shape like 345566 waiting on 47p. Also if we assume 4p is safe then automatically we also assume 1p + 7p suji is safe? The 5p discard is the discard that reveals 5aka then I assume. Please let me know if I understood all of that correctly 😅

      @MrFeng 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Your understanding is correct. I'll also explain why 7p is safe in case someone mention about 89p. Its close to impossible to have 89 because that means the player would have 13 56 89p. Anybody will aim for Ittsu and not drop 13p here.

    I found that nobody had answered for the last quiz yet. As Non-Dealer, Sakigiri double musuji 456 should be corresponded to turn 5~14, I suppose. So the answer is from 5th turn, right?

    • @moonpolbelmond1
      @moonpolbelmond1 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      On second thought, I was wrong. All the 3 tiles (3/4/6m) to be drawn to reach Tenpai should be followed to discard 4/5m which is too early. Accordingly, with further drawing 3m + 6m to Tanyao, Sakigiri 4m should be from turn 7. I do hope it’s correct this time. 😊

      @osuf3581 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MrFeng - Sorry for being curt! I did not expect you to read and respond to the comments. Really like your videos and lectures in general - thank you for making them! It's just that, someone who has studied logic, most call-outs of fallacies are only appropriate when an argument is made about what * must * follow. When someone is just reasoning about whether something is more or less likely, then many of the forms that would otherwise be called fallacious are actually valid. And well, Mahjong is essentially all probabilistic heuristics. So good or bad reasoning must be derived from statistics or similar probabilistic reasoning rather than whether something is or is not a 'fallacy'. It is also amusing as without that consideration, many of the examples of 'good reasoning' in this video would also be fallacies if one interpreted them as strict claims.

    • @MrFeng
      @MrFeng หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@osuf3581 I'm not academically inclined with fallacy. The overall message of this video is talking about reasoning that's not based on probability. If players are using probabilities reasoning expressed in numbers, then there's little room for any fallacy. This video is inspired from seeing how these reasoning have been frequently used poorly to justify bad plays. So if you get the whole essence of it, then I'm not worried even if you disagree. 🙂

    These discard reading videos are very interesting (and hard lol). I see how it's very likely that they have another 5p in hand, but I'm wondering if it has to be aka. - Is there a situation where tedashi here would be correct for them if they just drew another regular 5p? I know it's usually bad but since we're able to read the discards here then maybe? - Is it possible for them to have drawn into two 5p and kept a 3455 aryanmen?

    • @MrFeng
      @MrFeng หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@azer67 as you have rightly pointed out, karagiri here is possible and likely done by a less experienced player because it reveal info about his hand unnecessarily. So if you have the aka yourself, you can even read that the player just did a karagiri. 3455p is not possible because of the early 6p discarded. No reason to do so from 34556p

    • @azer67
      @azer67 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MrFeng Yeah that makes sense. I think I was thinking about the situation where they drew the 5p after they discarded the 6p. Something like 13346 -> discard 1 and 6 -> draw 5, discard 3 -> draw 5, keep 3455. I see it would have to be a situation where the 3455 would be good to have but not a 3345. Either for furiten reasons or a 234 sanshoku chance? It doesn't seem likely though. Even in this case, the deduction stays the same, they have a 5p in hand and their pinzu shape is complete so it doesn't matter much lol

    Dora dragon is such a pain to have. It's both dangerous to discard and (usually) inefficient to keep. Even with pair of them, it's valuable, but the chance to actually win the hand is not that high. Triplet though is a completely different story. Safe to discard, easier to win, very valuable.

    I think a good point to note is that those sakigiri tables shouldn't be followed religiously. There are always other factors that affect sakigiri, such as point situation (if you have a huge lead, sakigiri more, if you're 4th with a big gap, sakigiri less), wall reading, danger levels of individual tiles (e.g. because of ura suji, flush hands). I think it's a good general guideline to follow, but thinking "did I make a mistake by cutting 5s one turn too early according to the EV charts even though it seemed dangerous?" isn't a valuable use of time.

    • @MrFeng
      @MrFeng 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, we can assume that tiles discarded as genbutsu after riichi means it is more definite that the players no longer has the tile to discard, otherwise it would be discarded. Based on this, we can extrapolate how much more dangerous will this be. From 2:50, the whole yellow section will be split between red and grey. So the deal in rate of 3 discarded one chance increase by around 10-15 percent (eg from 10 percent deal in to 11-11.5 percent)

  • @NanoGamingGamer
    @NanoGamingGamer 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'm a little confused on the efficiency here? Pei, Haku, and Chun are both once discarded, shouldn't we keep 69 or 14 shapes? 3 pairs don't seem to be enough for chiitoi.

    • @MrFeng
      @MrFeng 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Are you referring to 1:50 discarding 7s? We have 5 blocks here, 446m 344p 23s sha sha, chun chun. since 7m is dora, we will be using 446 block for sure. There's little value ing trying to get a ryanmen around 7s here as the hand will only move towards 1k. With 4 pairs here, we need to keep haku to see if we can move to 7toi or toitoi.

    • @Kisuzume
      @Kisuzume 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am nowhere near Feng's skill level, but assuming you mean the 1m and 9m cut before pei, haku, and chun, that is standard yakuhai order. Cutting lone terminals before yakuhai (i.e. not guest winds) is normal especially if there's overlap save certain yaku considerations. If you look up "Riichi Mahjong Tactics Yakuhai Order and Movement" you'll see how to handle the early discards.
