Old Man Winter 2025 - 40 Mile Course
Old Man Winter Bike / Run Rally is an annual event in Lyons, Colorado. We never know what the surface conditions, weather, etc are going to be. Its always a blast! I was coming out of a few weeks of injury and didn't race very well, but it was still a great season opener. We've also had such bad weather for several weeks, this was the first time most of us had ridden outside lately.

This was a really nice event and a great day out on the bike. My group took 2 wrong turns throughout the day and I had 3 chain drops. I also didn't have my 2 smallest gears so I had to really power through the climbs at low cadence sometimes.

Placed 52/1045 overall and 9/111 in my category. I was active in the lead group until I was dropped on the first of two big climbs. Started passing the short course party pacers towards the end - some e-bikes, handcycles, etc. Great day out in Steamboat!

This is some of my GoPro footage from the 2022 Unbound Gravel race - 100 mile course. There is no commentary, just footage. I made this to watch during those long Zwift sessions in the winter, to remind me what I train for. All footage shot on a GoPro Hero10 in 4k.

Awesome video! I started way in the back and also have a GoPro as well.. Only got single battery but will bring extras from now on.
What are you recording with Matt? My GoPro died at 1 hour 12 minutes 🙁
Hey, I use a GoPro as well but I swap batteries a few times.
were you able to do Columbine climb without getting off the bike ?
I was physically able, but the traffic jam required getting off the bike to walk. Its literally a line and there's nothing you can do about it 😅
@@WoollyAndTheCosmicGravel Thanks for your reply. I'm a lot older dude than you and will try my 2nd attempt this summer.
Excellent job 👏 respect brother love from Delhi India ❤
Was Eddie Money able to attend?
Great video and what a bike !
We were in the same corral. Great video, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing this. Looks like Type 2 fun for sure. I've signed up for 2025. My first time. Any tips or advice for a noob?
Choose some heavy duty tires, eat a lot, and send it!
Respect honestly to the riders greatness out there 🇯🇲🙏🇯🇲
Great video. Will give it a first time next year. What size tires did you use and what camera? Thanks.
Well look at that, my butt is in that video 🤣
Hi. What bike you used to this ride and what camera to film?
thanks for the video! Bummer about the cutout at the end. Nice race. There were multiple crashes a few rows behind you in the "safe" 7 mile leadout. I guess Longmont doesn't want us on the roads but the bike path is tough for a group of 100+.
oh wow, I had no idea there were crashes back there!
It's weird seeing myself in a race. Thanks for the video
This is how it's done! Thank you for posting an excellent video, and great job on the trail!
Glorious!😍😍👍👍❤❤ (although personally, I could never wear something strapped onto my back whilst cycling)... whoa, chain dropped! See? I AM really watching it 🙂
1:32:15 Look ma I'm on the TH-cams!
Extremely sketchy crossing the tracks seconds before amtrak. Dozens of riders should be dq'd for that. Stupid risk taking. Only a matter of time before we have a major accident at a big gravel race. Hope it was worth it..
Absolutely good call out. You can’t really tell from the video but that train was nearly stopped. I was really far down past that before the whistles reached the crossing
@@WoollyAndTheCosmicGravel Thanks for the measured reply. I was a bit behind you and had to slow up for a few seconds for the train to pass. It wasn't going fast. Seen some crazy stuff at other gravel races - mass blowing of stopped signs and chicken runs with pickups - as well as jumping tacks before trains, and it's just not worth it and can result in races losing their permits.
Totally agree with you. Maybe it was sketchier behind me as the train got closer. I’ve been stoped by trains at a few races, it is what it is. I see the same thing in group rides when the light changes and people blow the light - not worth it.
More like a road race than Dirt.
I think this course was about 90% gravel/dirt, but very smooth and fast
I'm a far cry from what I used to be but I've got some bikes I like to ride any dirt on.
Wow, Tom’s kid can get up the hills 😳
Yeah Steve can really throw down on those punchy climbs. I hung in there until that last wall of a climb. Those were 500-750w efforts for me
@@WoollyAndTheCosmicGravel would have been 900 watt efforts for a moose like me! 😂🐄
Great job and thanks for sharing
I was with you for most of the 2nd half. Dude in green was taking huge pulls on the back half. Nice work despite the routing issues!
Oh yeah? What kit were you in?

I did the 70 and was cooked at the end. Great event thanks for sharing your vid!
A few minutes in and all I can hear is water sloshing around lol.
Just providing the realistic experience 🤣
Nice one! Thx for recording the race. I was there with you. The guy with the rainbow socks and the Lauf. You’re riding right behind me at min 3 🤩🤘
Great high end player from SONY, i have the CDP-302ES with wooden side panels from Japan. Robust build. Soundwise 7,5/10
Excellent video! Thank you for for taking this 65 year old on I ride that I can only dream of doing! Gongratulations on your finish!
Keegan Swenson inbound at 1:13:15!
Awesome ride ... congrats on the buckle. . If you do it again would you stick to the hardtail or mix it up with full sus???
@@rickyfretwell thank you, and that’s a great question! Right now I’m fully intending on doing it again on the hardtail. The descents are rough and fast so some more practice on skills there will be immensely useful. But as a larger rider @ 6 foot 1, 200lbs, the climbing advantage was really solid for me. If I were to do it a 3rd time and had a full sus XC bike, that would be a fun experiment though!
@WoollyAndTheCosmicGravel I could tell you were causing them grief and catching them on the climbs. From the angle of the camera I noticed you slowed some on the descents but didn't look like much. Was moving faster than me on a full sus I'm sure hahaha. I'm new to it and from south alabama. I made the trip to leadville in June and rode my bike for some practice and opened my eyes to I need alot more practice lol. Planning on 2025 racing for first time even if I have to do the camp to get in. I have an older epic and a newer stupjumper .. I'm thinking the older epic is going to be my ride for leadville because of all the climbing. Great content .. Showed places I haven't seen yet.
@@rickyfretwell if you set your mind to it, you can and will do it! The community and amount of information for this race in particular is overwhelmingly awesome, but I recommend putting most of that aside and just ride
@WoollyAndTheCosmicGravel thanks for the information and encouragement. I need all the help I can get lol.
This is fantastic. I find it difficult sometimes to really get into all the talky bike videos, though I still watch 'em. This was really refreshing.
for once, an ACTUAL neutral rollout! I've been resoundingly dropped in other "neutral" rollouts 😂
Gracias por compartir video, espero tener el archivo .gpx para simularlo en Smart Bike 👍🏾👍🏾🚲🚲🚲
A lot more road than I'd have thought. What percent was road to gravel?
For the Red course it was probably 60% gravel
Great content and thanks for no crappy music.
Great video
thanx for sharing, nice footage. greetings from germany.
passed so many going up hill; lost positions going down (unnecessary use of the brake?). rider’s actual fitness probs much better than final result indicates.
@@foundfoundfound1 100%. I was on a hardtail and would get passed by folks on full suspension, then catch them on the climbs. My descending confidence needs work for sure
Great job, dude. I saw ya me in the beginning as you passed me. Passed you back on Columbine. Great ride out there!
Oh cool! I see I’m in your video as well! Yeah I had a sidewall slice at mile 27 and had to change a tire, took awhile. Still had a great day out there, hope you did as well!
@WoollyAndTheCosmicGravel bummer. Glad you were able to get a new tire. Was that at Pipeline or Outward Bound? My day was amazing until having to deal with Powerline, Turquoise Lake Road up, And Boulevard. Those almost broke me. Haha. Glad you were able to.get your buckle and not have to do it again. Unless you like it and you want to. For me, it was a one and done.
Man this race looks so miserable and fun at the same time. Was it your first time? How did you do?
This was my first time at Leadville. I actually did fairly well considering Brown Corral start and a sidewalk slice at mile 27
@@WoollyAndTheCosmicGravel congrats. Seems mostly gravel style. I was surprised to see some extra rocky areas. Your video showed areas you don’t see in the official recaps. Kind of want to do this race Lol
@@chrismoore1182 it’s like a puzzle. There were long paved areas, gravel, loose chunky descents you need a MTB for, single track, just all kinds of stuff.
@@WoollyAndTheCosmicGravel Yes, I would be on my epic evo 7 with FA. Did you qualify for the race? curious how to get there. I might look into the stage race first as an entry to it.
@@chrismoore1182expect to have to place top 3 in your age group or better to get in by place. The coin lottery can be only about a 1/50 chance depending on how many stay for it and how many who stay already have an entry. For me to place in the 50-60 AG it probably would have taken an FTP of almost 4.5 - 5 watts/kg at sea level.
thank u for filiming this have a great pic of me and my dog and the race !
Did you get your buckle?
I did! I had to let go of my target time when I had a sidewall slice and needed to swap tires, but I still finished and got my buckle
Thanks! Now I can sleep.
Thxs for the refresh of my memories from 29 yrs ago...yr #2 here...LOL...
How do people do it at this elevation. I can barely handle 5200 ft 😮
Acclimate. Took me 8 days to feel good up there.
I felt pretty good up there. Some people handle altitude better than others
@@WoollyAndTheCosmicGravel biking recovery is like having a mild hangover I'm not so sure I like this stuff lol
