tbh I wasn't a fan the first half was just a fish out of water comedy, while constantly dropping 'something nefarious might be going on' hints. The romance part honestly came out of nowhere for me. Didn't buy Kat and Graham together; if anything there were multiple times I thought she was going to end up with the Expat Maggie. when it switched to espionage thriller for the final third was the part I enjoyed the most. The flashbacks to Grahams expeditions seemed pointless; I don't recall any reveals or anything significant being told in those sections.

I feel like secret societies have to be real b/c people keep talking about them 😅 I need to read more books that talk about skiing/snowboarding! especially now that it's winter ❄ is this book a thriller?

I picked up the book from my local library and am about half through it. I think that there is a particular coffee shop (kissaten) in Jimbocho that was the basis for the Saveur coffee shop in the book. My wife & I found it in a back street close to the Jimbocho station in 2011. The name is Sabouru. It appears to be quite old and looks very quaint. One review on line commented that the name means skip school or taste (savor) in Spanish. We even met the owner, who did not have a mustache (in the book he did). The coffee was very good but the wooden chairs were small and hard. We will try visiting it in April next year.

love this series so much! and you said it so well - it romanticizes writing (so much so that it made me want to be an author!) iris and roman are both great and attie and marisol are some of my favorite side characters!

I read the first book of the series this summer and despite the book being very short, I had to push to get through it. I liked the traveling part of the story, but I felt like there was a lot of time wasted on the minute details happening in the café before the people got to travel, and this really slowed the book down. I also have a feeling that the translation played into my lack of enjoyment. It is really too bad, because the traveling stories themselves were very touching and brought me to tears, but you had to really work to get to them! I decided not to continue the series, but I will go watch your second video to see what you thought of books 2, 3 and 4. 🙂

This is great - this book was on my TBR list, so I'm glad to hear that you liked it and recommend it. 🙂 If you're looking for murder mystery recommendations, you might want to check out Everyone in my Family has Killed Someone and the sequel, Everyone on This Train is a Suspect, from Benjamin Stevenson. They are very compelling and funny, and the humour is reminiscent of Zero Stars, Do Not Recommend's style.

I read that book a couple of months ago and I was pleasantly surprised. I did like it and it felt nice to read about something different. It is hard not to think about The Office TV show based on the coworkers' descriptions and shenanigans and the office setting.

I read this book last month and I also found it really funny and enjoyable. I was instantly drawn to the title and the cover when I spotted this book at my local store and I'm really glad I picked it up. I suspect this will make my list of favorite books of the year for 2024. 😃 The style of humour really reminded me of Benjamin Stevenson's Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone (and its sequel).

So, just so you know, "Samhain" is pronounced "Saween" and "Celtic" is pronounced with a "K" sound--like "Keltic", rather than "Sell-tic". Some fun facts that lots of people mess up a little lol!
