Mellotron - Strawberry Fields - Marco Hoogland

Playing Strawberry Fields by The Beatles on my Mellotron M400.
20 years ago I had the chance to buy am M400 for a fair price. I went there to have a look at it and played it for a few minutes but decided against it (it was somewhat beaten up but restorable) and bought a JD800 instead. I still regret my decision - I have never seen a Mellotron popping up in the ads where I live since then.
There is a video of Mike Pinder playing this song, and(I think) Tuesday Afternoon on his Mellotron. It's an art to play these things and make them sound right. You did a great job.
The Moody Blues were booked for a show in Tucson Arizona in the late ‘60s or early 70s - it’s been so long ago I can’t remember for sure- but we were disappointed that it was cancelled; apparently this gizmo, at the time it was referred to as a synthesizer, we were informed, had crashed and they didn’t think it would be up and running in time for the concert . Bummer ( as we would say ).
Uau !!!!!!!!
Great job. Very Mike Pinderesque. Do you think the high vocals choir was done using real vocals or Mellotron? This vid makes me miss my Mellotron more than I already do.
Gail from breaking bad knows how to jam here
You know it's serious when a pair of Yamaha CS's ( 50, i guess, and the mighty 80) come first! Superbly played, thank you!
thank you now I have to learn to play this on my memotron
Bravo!
When you play the Mellotron, always remember to Breathe Deep.
The truth of the matter is the flute part was played by Ray Thomas on a real flute. RIP Ray. Don't worry I set them straight. Also the intense string build up at the end of this song is the london festival orchestra.
I owned that model...though they sound great, they were a pain to use live. Keeping the heads clean, ugh. Definitely a studio keyboard🤔
I love the Mellotron. It is an incredibly versatile. The two rank Mellotrons had basically drum tracks, orchestral sections or melody segments on the left hand. The right rank was like an M400 with three track selections for note of both ranks. Played carefully, the Mellotron sounded like you were playing lead with an entire band or orchestra backing you. The BBC used a Mellotron in studio with lots of different sound effects and crowd noises preloaded, that’s genius.
This instrument is magical, and the Beatles made it even more so..
I know. It’s such a beautiful instrument.
Whats the longest sustain on the Mellotron? 10 seconds?
About 7-9 seconds
The sustain is nominally 8 seconds, after which the tape abruptly stops.
@ ah ok
8 seconds to be exact.
You play Pinder so well ☺️
Hello. I'm Japanese. (^_^)v Mellotron... "the original sampler"... I learned for the first time how it works. Thank you. m(_ _)m

Nice! Thanks for sharing. 😊
excellent video. I was wondering what you do for a career? is it to do with music? Just curious
Omfg soooo cool!
Wow! A new world's opening for me! I've listen to the MoodyBlues for decades and never understood that the backingsound was a Mellotron! Especially the "Flute"! Thank You!😄
Although the Mellotron had a flute sound, (Strawberry Fields Forever) It's likey Ray Thomas played an actual flute on the recording.
Wow... this has to be one of my personal favorite pieces of music ever and I had no idea it was played on a mellotron. I always thought it was full orchestra. Beautiful play Sir. ❤
Well, I'll be damned. I never knew.
Brilliant
amei, to chorando
Wow.
This gives me chills. The Moodies were geniuses in how they incorporated this instruments into their sound like no one else at the time. And are you telling me that the flute solo was not played on a flute but on the M400? Wow! I always assumed it was an actual flute.
Great job thank you for showing and playing that for us. You played it well.
Top Dimais sou fã
My band has been playing NiWS for the past year, and it always kills. Sadly, no Mellotron, but my Nautilus' 'taped strings' gets very close. I think the Mellotron sound is what's gets the song over; it would be weak if I used some analog synth strings.
The way the tape clasp moves is nostalgic.
FASCINATING!
Nothing sounds like a Mellotron. I have dozens of sampled instruments that are based on the Mellotron but none of them truly capture the unique sound that a real real Mellotron is capable of producing.
What a Wonderful Instrument….
Just Wonderful…What a Beautiful Song…
Amazing❤😍😍
Using Mellotron I remembered Pink Floyd's Sysyphus Part 4
The Beatles in the studio back then - what’s this, a piece of pipe? Let’s use it. 😂
Neden gözlerimde yaş var ? Bunu her dinlediğimde 😢
McCarthy used a Prophet 5 for the main chords. He did use a CS 80 for the children choir sounds.
You made seem as if the flute solo was played by the mellotron. It was not. It was Ray Thomas playing an actual flute.
Moodies👍🎶🥰✌️Yeah!!!
The pitch the tempo and the sound are spot on, great cover
Holy cow, I didn't know I could like that song any better than I already do, but I do. Thx.
Beautiful! I have also listened to this for along time never knew it was a Mellotron
Just don’t exceed the eight second rule!
The idea in Nights In White Satin seems to have been an "imagined," "dreamy," "trippy" sound, without the full fidelity or articulation of a live orchestra, so super high fidelity was not needed, or wanted, for the instrumentals. The Mellotron turned out to be just the thing to portray that. Who knows -- maybe that was the original idea for the Mellotron anyhow, and NIWS just turned out to be its most iconic use. I can't see the Mellotron being used for seriously "sober" music. More modern, high quality samples suit that better.
King Crimson sold one of their 2 mellotrons to Genesis. The rest is history
Oooh! 👏 What a nice little miniature kids piano! 🎹 Where can I get one? EBay? 😂 (probably costs $8000)
Kids piano is crazy 💀💀💀💀
