    • @AppalachainMTB
      @AppalachainMTB 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @TonightWeGrill Doing jumps in general with a heavier bike is only a little different than a non e-bike. Heavier bikes don't move as easy in the air. Going downhill, gravity is very much on your side. The best example I have is all the jumps on Devil's Racetrack in this video are super easy on an acoustic bike and an ebike. The biggest difference is when I have to jump as hard as I can on my ebike to gap the bridge at the end. It's much easier to get height on my acoustic bike.

    Your bikes always seem so dialed in man. I'd love to know your method of getting your pressures, volume spacers, sag, etc. I'm struggling with my rear shock right now. Its been 2 years since I've ridden because of an injury (not MTB related) and its like the bike doesnt want me on it anymore. Another great vid. I enjoyed it and watched while I was working.

    • @AppalachainMTB
      @AppalachainMTB 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks, most of that is simply more and more repetition. I start with whatever the manufacturer recommendation is for front and rear. Then for the rear I keep it at the firmest end of the recommendation. For my rear shock I keep it at 22% sag. Because I have high speed rebound, low speed rebound and general compression, I've left the high and low speed settings in the middle, but adjust the general rebound. Half the time I'm in 1/2 lock out which makes the back end very firm in jumps. I'm doing chunky tech I open it up to keep it under control. For my front shock I generally keep it right in the middle of there recommendation. I think this is 25% but I could be wrong. I start with the manufacturer recommendation. Then I pick a location that I can session 20 or so times and start making adjustments one setting and one click at a time till I can tell if it's better or worse. It takes a lot of time. Then I make note of my pressures and just keep it there.

    • @Oper8or
      @Oper8or 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@AppalachainMTB Thank you. That is pretty much the procedure I use but I tinker with the settings and jacked up my low speed on the fork and now the rear rebound is to fast. I know I can slow it down but if I do then I use up way too much of the travel because I'm fat and have the highest amount of pressure in the shock, plus two tokens. Thank you for sharing that with me. I'll just keep tracking what I change and see if I can find a happy spot for general riding.

    I've ridden piggyback and hogwild at WR. TBH I dont think I could go above that level out there. I'd get my butt kicked. The berm on piggyback was washed out so bad I had to stop and check to make sure I could even make it. I mustered the balls to do it and rode it a few more times. It was fun once I learned the line but I was nervous the entire time. I'm 51 years old and I've had 4 heart attacks. I'm not looking to land myself in the hospital again, although I'm willing to try some things that are pretty steep. I just lack the confidence to do most of it.

    • @AppalachainMTB
      @AppalachainMTB 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      WR is always an adventure. I feel like I'm at the edge of what I can do on the new trails I try. I kept forgetting to turn my camera on when I was riding other trails there. I'm with you WR is it's own adventure that makes any other place that rates things Blue or Black seem so much more tame. You have me by just a couple years, but I'm with you. I don't want to end up back in the hospital again. Broke some bones in my ankle a year ago. Just starting to full get over my concussion and shoulder sprain from two months ago.

    TIL I really need to learn how to adjust my suspension correctly. I almost went OTB because my rebound was set to high. Made for a very unfun moment. lol. Excellent video once again man. Love it. keep up the great work on these vids. You are a really good rider and I hope to be that good someday.

    • @AppalachainMTB
      @AppalachainMTB 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @Oper8or there is a lot to be said about the adrenaline rush of a near OTB moment. Because you asked in the last video - Best Trails: Uncle Chucks - rooty, steep and loamy. There is a fun hip if you manage your speed right. Flying Squirrell - there are a bunch of tables and some whoops you can double that are just fun to play on. Lots of line choices and room to make mistakes. Good Trails: The Yeti - it's fresh cut. There are soft berms and it gets super greasy with just a little bit of rain. After a few more weeks of being bedded in, it'll probably move to the Best list. Easy Street - All around Green trail, however there are multiple lines you can take and make fun with a few pedal strokes. Worst Trail: Joy Ride - it's the longest trail on the mountain and it feels like you have to pedal the whole way. There are a few switchbacks that are very flat with no berms. I avoid this. The only reason I ride it from time to time is only to have it on video. You'll notice I only do it once or twice if I ride it during a trip.

  • @Oper8or
    @Oper8or 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

    One of the things that confuse me is that people never record the "worst" trails. I guess because its based on the opinion of the rider and maybe the skill level but that would be an interesting video. Excellent work once again and thank you for bringing us along. Next week we ( my butt and my head) will hit bakers creek for a solid day of pain. Wish me luck sir. Look forward to seeing more fun and bruises from you soon!

    • @AppalachainMTB
      @AppalachainMTB 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You bring up a very good point. I hated my first run down Black Mamba, but my next run down it I really liked it. I also hated Green Mamba because the bottom part didn't have any features, yet it was the trail I chose for my very last run (forgot to turn on my camera). I struggle with my favorite vs worst trails. Going to Windrock or Vee Hollow often on one pass down I love a trail the next, I choose not to hit it. What I'm really saying here is that I'm too subjective to have an opinion on a trail that lasts longer than the trail is long. Earlier this year I wanted to focus on flow and big jumps, so my favorite trails would be something without that. Now, I've really enjoyed the gnarr especially at Beech during this adventure. Best of luck at Baker!

      @Oper8or 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@AppalachainMTB Completely understand. I personally would like to hear you opinion on the trails though. I mean even just general comments on them or why you made that choice. @@Oper8or I see what you're getting at. Beech Mountain this trip - Black Bear - worst trail for me. Too rooty and the obstacles weren't much fun and I left too much of my chainring on some of the rocks. I never went down on the trail, but wasn't feeling it. Best Trails - These are because I was liking the flow and the huge shark fins - Indigo (top of the mountain) Canebrake(lower mountain trail) - awesome mix of flow and berms Hellbender - killer run out flow section to finish the run. Honorable mention was Black Mamba - big drop I wasn't ready to hit, but thought about. The drop I did hit was super well built. The tech was challenging and still fun. You can take it all the way down or 1/2 way down and then I could go over to Canebrake for some more flow.

This is an incredible place to ride, from the well groomed trails to the more gnarly obstacles. Just gear up as there will be crashes. I had two good ones on this trip, but, I got right back up and kept going for the whole day.

    Great video. Great lesson for people to see, because TBI can have long lasting effects, and if you had ignored them, and had another crash, it can cause symptoms to last MUCH longer. Stinks you didn't get to experience the area much, and all because of one slight little dead sailor off that small jump. That jump is little different than some, because it's short and steep, so it really impacts your suspension more violently. I've seen more than a few crashes on that exact jump, so you're not alone. Years ago, in the skills park that is just NE of where you were riding in this video, it was completely different. We were riding one late afternoon, and someone saw something shining in the tall grass. He stopped, and it was a bike, and about 10 feet away was a rider, on his back, sleeping. He called us over and we woke him up. He acted like he was fine...just resting. But...the dude had a sunburn, so we ascertained that he'd been there for a good while. We had an ex-EMT there on the ride, and he took over the assessment, and did what you're supposed to do, and didn't ask really easy "lobbed" questions. That's something else people need to keep in mind...asking their name and where they are from...are more long term memory items, and not the first things to be affected by TBI. Do you feel any intense pain? No. What month is it, and where are you? It's February, in Montana. No need for further questioning at that point. Not even close. It was June, in Arkansas. We ultimately were able to get in contact with his wife, and we transported him and his bike to a safe extraction point, and she took him to the ER. You never want to laugh about something like that, but for a long time after, when anyone crashed and was asked if they were OK, the reply was always, "It's February in Montana."

      So very well stated about TBI. I'm 6 weeks on now and I've been very cautious to keep healing. The first time I watched this was the day after my crash. I don't remember anything from the footage. My helmet didn't have a crack in it and just looked like it had a bit of dust on it. The visor wasn't damage. I hit right on the opening above my left eye. I wear a full face helmet and am so very glad I did. My GoPro was still attached just fine and obviously recording. I'm glad you found value in this video. I can joke about it now thanks to the good crew I was riding with.
