Oh hey another DS learner! Spanish is my 3rd language and the last time I studied spanish was for 30hrs almost 20 years ago in high school where I barely paid attention. I stopped translating in my head in the first 10-20 hours. Growing up my family spoke to me in one language and everyone else spoke to me another, so that might be why I don't need to take the scenic route when hearing spanish lol
Great job documenting your journey on all the different languages you're learning Jaci!! Would you be interested in being a guest on my language learning podcast and talk about your experience? ☺
thanks so much!! and omg, for sure i'd love to. that'd be so cool :D

If you want to read I really recommend duchinese and heavenly path! I started duchinese from scratch last year and now I'm able to read writers like 余华 and 三毛, I definitely couldn't have done it without those two sites. You do have to put in the hours but it's really been fun along the way!
i've heard about duchinese and i'm definitely going to look into it fr!! and thanks for the other rec, i didnt know about heavenly path. that's so cool you've seen yourself advance so much in reading hanzi!! eeee i can't wait :D thanks for the recs and encouragment!! 🫧
the pinyin is a sound chart its not like the romanisation in Korean I also tried to ignore it at first and quickly learned it was essential to my hearing. A more accurate is the IPA which shows you where to place your tongue. Zhuyin method or Pinyin can be used for typing so saved on learning to write later. This encourages me to definitely start logging my listening hours thanks for sharing. I also started in July. Please do the basic tones. Things will make so much more sense once you do it. It is definitely more input input input is what am being told will help me improve my speaking and making sentences.
ooooh, wow cool youre on a journey to learning mandarin as well! its truly a beautiful language. yeah, i think logging your hours is very helpful and encouraging as well :) and thanks for that advice, i will def look into the tones. i'm sort of familiar with them in general because i did briefly attempt to learn vietnamese a few times before which has way more. but to be more clear on the ones mandarin has specifically would def be beneficial~ good luck on your journey!!
@xojaci thank you I spent 7 hours today listening after watching your video yesterday . We can do this 😊
I’m learning Japanese from near-scratch with CI and it’s a doozy. My first language acquisition experience too (not counting native). Obviously Japanese and Mandarin aren’t the same, but they’re both far enough from English that I feel the experience is gonna be similar to what you’re up to. I’m only around 6.5 hours in right now and I really can’t understand much of anything at all yet without the video, but I’m sure I’ll get there eventually. Thanks for documenting early stages, because those tend to be overlooked a decent bit. Good luck with your efforts!
wow!! that's so cool, good luck on your japanese journey! :D its been a rollercoaster as ive began mandarin from zero, but tbh, it makes it SO worth it because like how cool is that? to know you started a language from scratch and advanced thru CI! like wow fr. and thanks!! i look forward to continuing to update about how it's all going :)
Hello you are so beautiful thank you very much for sharing with this great content .Will you marry me 🎉🎉.

Ah sneaky!! I’m glad/hope you are okay from your surgery ♥️ I can’t wait to start mandarin. I agree tho I def won’t be a purist (haven’t even truly been a purist in Spanish tbh lol) because the characters are my primary reason for being interested lol. Idk if you saw it already, but the roadmap was updated for 1.5x instead of 2x!
Do you think the times 1.5 is accurate? I think it's closer to 1.8x . I'm at 750 hours in CI Japanese
@ 1.5x does seem optimistic to me lol but I haven’t gotten far enough to be able to know.
thank you!! 🥲 i'm def better now!! being a purist is really not for everyone lol. as much as i'd love to do it, being able to read in other languages is the ultimate for me tbh it'll be so cool when you start mandarin!! hehe and omg what??? i had no idea. lowkey, that gives me a bit less pressure hahah so thanks for letting me know!! 😊
omg? thats exciting lmao i really hope u and ur sister are able to keep going and get fluent
thank u sm!! 🥹
Its very tough to stop translating in your head..try to translate onto pictures in your mind instead of your native language is a good excercise
Happy for you keep going. I’m around 120 I feel good about my journey

Congratulation on 800 hours! I recommend Lingq for reading the Spanish content is really good. There is a lot of content there! It cool that you and your partner are learning together! We and mine want to learn Spanish together after we move!
@@callmejobson thank you!! ☺️ and cool thanks for the rec!! these days i usually just resort to books or vogue españa hahah thats so nice!! it's so fun to have someone to learn with :D my partner is actually a native spanish speaker, so i have a lil built in crosstalk partner hehe
congratulations on 800! 🎉💗 i feel like that happened so fast!! and LOL, ambiguity, same!!!!!!
thanks!! :D hahaha its so hard for no reason lmfaoooo
Congrats on 800 hours. HUGE accomplishment! And I'm like you - I live in a Spanish speaking country and I obviously speak when I need to and I try to always speak Spanish at stores and stuff, but I just don't feel ready to pour it on. I kinda got ripped on the subreddit for not taking the opportunity to speak here. But I'll do it at my own pace. I can see the progress, so I'm not worried (okay, I'm a little worried 😂). And oh my gosh yes...taking 4 hours to do 1 hour! If only I wouldn't get sidetracked I could be at 1500 hours by now (I'm at 750ish)!!! It drives me nuts how much time I waste because I get bored and can't focus. I spend way too much time looking at the DS website for something I think I'll like instead of just grinding through. So I'm a dingaling. I have that Chrome add-on and I use it to look at the levels and the upload dates on the DS website, but how do you get it to add your TH-cam hours? I feel like that would be a game changer for me. Keep up the great work!!!
@@InputGuerreraEspañol thank you!! :D ahh i'm sorry people tried to call you out for that! i think living in a spanish speaking country seems like an amazing opportunity and it is, but truthfully it really feels amazing when you have wayyyy more hours. so far, i've just felt a lot of pressure and sometimes being here just highlights how i'm totally not where i wanna be yet! i love living here, but it can be overwhelming at the same time :') but its whatever, it takes time and you def gotta do what feels best for you! AND SAME. its like i have probably spent more time looking for my next watch than actually watching on some days 😅 so i've gotten the chrome add-on to work by having dreaming spanish open in one tab and then having my youtube history open in the other. usually a little orange button will pop up that you can click on to transfer the time watched on a video to your DS time. sometimes it doesnt work immediately and i'll just refresh or reopen the tabs and the little button eventually shows up! hopefully this helps :) thanks once again, and same to you!!
Haha it’s so funny, I saw 800 hrs and I was like oh she’s moving so fast! And then like the first thing you said was how slow it felt 😂 I’m so excited for you to start chapter books! Are you in the minimmersion discord? 👀

can you share the link for this server ? 😅
@@aljunefernandez3730 hey!! the server is hosted by @/leaf.ling_learns on instagram, so you can find the link there and more about the server!! :)
I think the biggest advice to stop translating in your head is to just ignore it. Don’t actively do it, but don’t actively try not to do it because then you are still focused on that in a way. I have 15+ years of off and on Spanish learning prior to DS and at ~640 hours I still translate in my head some but the more input I do, the less it gets over time. I also notice it way more when I try to watch stuff that’s a bit too hard. I’m confident it will work itself out in time if I keep going with input and don’t try to push myself outside of what comfortable for me (some new words and stuff but still like 98% or more comprehensible).
@@TheOneChannelToRuleThemAll thanks so much for your insight!! i'm the same, i just keep thinking the more input i get eventually it'll go away!! and its definitely minimized overtime, but its still there. i actually noticed with slower/easier content i translate in my head more because i have the time to! but with native content, theyre going so fast i dont wanna get left behind and i'm actually catching way more without translating. and then i realize im not translating and im like omg! then i start translating, and i end up lost. hahahah its so weird. your advice definitely makes sense! i just need to relax and let it flow, without forcing anything~

Hey Jaci! I totally relate with you on this video. I do have moments when I watch something in English, I feel that I instead should be getting input in Spanish. This includes driving as well. I've learned to allow myself to be because it brings me joy.
@@8possibilities literally!! sometimes we forget, we can do both. we don't always have be language learning machines :')
I agree. Learning Spanish is a sacrifice at times. Balance is key 🔑 I used to only listen to Spanish podcasts when I am in the car, but I started to miss my car dance sessions to my favorite (English) songs. Like you said, it feels good to just be able to enjoy what you normally enjoy in our native language. Thanks for the reminder to just enjoy the process. I am wishing balance for you! Love your videos, thanks for sharing your journey. 😊

If people around the world want to living in chile and Chilean society. should understand our values not foreign traditions, Chileans traditions, if people want to be accepted by Chileans citizens.
Love your video as always! I have been having such as reading slump for a while now and it took me saying "okay im going to read this in english and im only going to read" instead of always forcing myself to read in another language or only listening to audiobooks when im making language resources for myself or whatever, giving the book my full attention without it being a "language learning activity" has brought back my enjoyment of reading. Since language learning is my favourite hobby too I often put pressure on myself to spend a lot of my free time doing languages, especially because there's a voice in my head saying "if you learn more languages you need more time for all of them" and honestly its important for me to also take a step back sometimes and remember being balanced in my life is actually what i need. This week I have been drawing for the first time in years, and funnily enough it has made me enjoy language learning more because now they both feel like hobbies rather than language learning being this all-encompassing monolith of a chore. Looking forward to your next video!! <3
@@JasmineReynolds-ep1jv awe thank you sm!! :') YES to needing the balance! thats truly the most important part, sometimes we feel too much pressure to alwayssss be advancing in our goals. but its okay to take a step back and just do things for enjoyment as well! i'm glad youre finding that for yourself! it definitely feels amazing to engage in old hobbies again, i also really like drawing and painting too! hehe :3
