    Good to see a project that is actively making a real difference - inspiring to see diversity returning to once extremely degraded land. All the best from the UK.

    Very similar methods to Small Mines used in South Wales 1990's. Explosives, Shovels and Horses. The conditions in these pictures look a a lot better than 1990's Welsh Mines.

      actually this reclamation is paid for by a fee collected from active coal mining and not tax dollars

      This was my exact thought too. They took an intact, family owned coal mine, complete with tipple and shaker plant, and destroyed it? How is that an achievement to be around of? It should have been preserved as a complete museum.

    It's good to see NTEC's commitment to "do the right thing." Thanks, OSM, for shining a light on their exemplary conduct. In the current deregulated environment, it is important to encourage, persuade and, when needed, compel companies that may not share NTEC's ideals to follow their example. May OSM's first priority always be to protect land and the quality of life of human and other life who call it home. Under this rubric, reclamation will be assured to happen as quickly, effectively and respectfully as is merited by each member of our wonderful, delicate and resilient biosphere.

    Great idea. Would this help with eutrophication in runoff saturated waters?

    • @jonowelser1788
      @jonowelser1788 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would definitely help - aeration can really improve water quality, especially in eutrophic lakes and ponds. The nitrogen cycle uses oxygen to break down ammonia nitrogen (NH4) into nitrite (NO2) and then into nitrate (NO3). However, the other half of this process (breaking down nitrate (NO3) into atmospheric nitrogen (N2)) requires anaerobic (oxygen-free) conditions.

      jonowelser1788 What’s the scale relationship between oxygen input and meaningful effect on a given body of water?

    This video perpetuates lie after lie by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection; the biggest lie of which absolutely no fish are returning to "previously acid-filled streams" as a result of this project. The stream below the project site is still severely acidic with a pH of 3. This project did not boost visitation or create new trails (it only replaced existing trails) for ATV or Enduro race riders as these activities have always occurred at the site. If anything, the riders are happy to be able to access the trails again since the entire area was closed during construction. The PA DEP ought to be ashamed of itself for nominating this project for a national award and the Office of Surface Mining ought to be even more ashamed not to look into the erroneous claims the PA DEP made to support a national award. This project wasted more than $10.5 million, most of which was from the federal Abandoned Mine Land Program that receives its funding from fees paid by active coal mining companies. The same land reclamation and tree-plantings could have been accomplished at a fraction of that cost, but over $7 million was spent on alkaline addition with the single goal of improving water quality. Before the project, the stream was dead with a pH of 3 and now after the project, the stream is still dead with pH of 3. That is not success and certainly not worthy of a national award.
