Fantastic job guys!! Your son is a beast! Looks like you had perfect weather the entire day. Excellent father-son adventure!! What month did you do this in? Maybe the Hiker's Express bus wasn't running, but usually if you check the Grand Canyon National Park Website you can look at the bus schedules for Blue (South Rim area including the Visitor Center) Orange (from Visitor Center to S. Kaibab Trail Head and Yaki Point) Red (Hermits Rest Route) and what you're really after, the "Hiker's Express" bus. This bus picks up hikers at the Bright Angel Lodge bus stop (up at the top of the parking lot to the right of the BA Lodge if you're facing toward the lodge) on the hour, makes a 2nd stop at the Back Country Office (above Maswick Lodge), then goes to the Visitor Center to pick up people there, and finally goes out to the S. Kaibab trail head. For the month of May this year (2024) it was picking up at BA Lodge, at 6am and 7am only, and you'd arrive at the S. Kaibab trail head 25min later. Currently (June thru Aug 31st) it's picking up at 5 and 6am only. If you guys go back to do R2R, trail runners with a wide toe box and toe socks, or a shoe like the Vivo Barefoot Primus Trail FG will be the tool of choice, along with shorts, a long sleeve drifit fabric shirt, and full brim hat. Light racing packs would also be a huge plus. As strong as you both are, you'll sail right through! Took my daughter on your route when she was 8, but we camped at Bright Angel Campground, and again at Havasupai Garden. We did R2R the following year, but again, as a backpacking/camping trip. We kept returning every year, and in 2015 started running R2R's each August on our birthdays. We did 5 in a row, and I've continued to run them each year. Did Whitney for the first time in October 2022. I had never been above 10,000 feet in my life before. Luckily I was just a little woozy at times, but never actually got sick. Completed the full hike in 17 hours!

The most difficult part of the climb is stepping past all the discarded “Wag Bags” left at Trail Camp. The NPS is failing their commitment to protect the wilderness environment.

Love this, great music too. I just moved here this past October from the northeast where I really miss ice climbing and winter hiking. Good to know the roads are open. Great way to stay acclimated all year round!

I’m fairly certain that I’m your neighbor, my wife and I are out often walking at night with our ruck backpacks training for an upcoming Whitney attempt after not making it earlier this year, and then I come across this video.
