Fliplanthropy #3: Embodying Post-Capitalist Philanthropy with Lynn Murphy
Exploring the edges of our core humanity and how that relates to the way we show up in philanthropic endeavours
In Post-Capitalist Philanthropy: Healing Wealth in the Time of Collapse, authors Lynn Murphy & Alnoor Ladha discuss the relevance of ontological shifts to further the notion that embodying post-capitalist philanthropic realities implies power bending and wealth redistribution, but also - and perhaps more importantly - that “we perceive and embody our actions in relationship to a dynamic, animate world”. This points to the importance of cellular - and in this sense ontological - changes in the process of shaking and shaping human behaviour and action anew.
This session is about dissecting this idea of “ontological shifts” so that we can flip philanthropy with respect to human and non-human realms. How do we move the tectonic plates from saviourist ideals towards grassroots empowerment? ‘Flipping’ the script to participation and collective power versus top/down mentalities. Replacing ideological dogma by group & indigenous wisdom.
About our speaker
Lynn Murphy is a strategic advisor for foundations and NGOs working in the geopolitical South. She was a senior fellow and program officer at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation where she focused on international education and global development. She resigned as a”‘conscientious objector” to neocolonial philanthropy. She holds an MA and PhD in international comparative education from Stanford University. She is also a certified Laban/Bartenieff movement analyst. She co-authored the book Post-Capitalist Philanthropy: Healing Wealth in the Time of Collapse

Fliplanthropy #2: The Psychology of Wealth with Iris Brilliant
มุมมอง 14วันที่ผ่านมา
Exploring funders' psychological underpinnings that prevent to move more accumulated wealth towards redistribution and deeply challenge donors' place of power and privilege. Philanthropy needs to shed the archaic models of charity-turned-philanthropcapitalism if we want to live up to systemic shifts, very much needed in the sector. If philanthropy is to level up into resource redistribution, be...

We look at different decolonial nar...

What makes up our beliefs, actions, and our desires to change the world? As activists and organisers, we tend to inherit a liberalist theory that good arguments will win the day, even if all the evidence points the other direction. We tend to imagine that just getting people “on the streets” is enough, but we don’t ask what will make them stick around for the long haul. We tend to forget or dow...

Their work in...

She asked a very interesting question : how do funders remain connected, involved, included and relevant to a certain cause/circule should they no longer give funds (to a specific organization for example).

Hey Richard, thanks for watching it! Yes he indeed got his flat with that method :) He was able to get around with a german surname for the first selection round via immoscout. Once he was in his real name didn’t matter anymore, the hardest part seems to be getting picked from the sea of applicants, so yes that got him a flat indeed :)

Great session. I agree that the activists’ whatever-it-takes saviour impulse has a psychological function. It's function is similar to the professionals’ must-try-harder devotee impulse. The function is to pull us away from the horror of helplessness, the grief about what's already lost, our uncomfortableness with the pain of other beings, and the terror of what awful things lie ahead. Either the saviour or devotee impulse numbs us to what we think or feel might become unbearable emotions. We fear despair. This has been the root cause of denial amongst the Western environmental sectors I've worked with since the 1990s. It has led to aggression towards those of us who express a more troubling outlook on the future and a more humble assessment of our capabilities. We are heretics for the religion of human dominion and progress. So we must be shunned and shamed. The lack of awareness of these dynamics in Western environmental sectors has allowed ecomodernist delusions and strategies to dominate and taken precious time from people to reassess their lives. But I am noticing that now shattering.

I'm an artist and musician, and rich people can suck it, and I will always let them know that in my work. I have other means of support, and will telecommute from a cheap city in eastern europe, where I don't have to deal with these corporate scumbags.

It's a such a weird dichotomy, such a leftist and open city as Berlin but with one of the worst housing crisis in the world and perhaps the most exclusive city in the world, now. Even the last time I was here in 2018 it wasn't like this at all, it was comparatively easy to find a place. I don't see how the personality of the city will hold up in this situation, eventually the artists will leave because they have to. Then where do they go?
