Balancing with 2 amps 800ah cells will take a while
I haven't installed my SBMS yet so I only balanced my battery bank once when I first built it. I've had it for five years now and it's still perfectly balanced. I only use it for lighting and it runs my water pump so it does not have much load on it but that will change when I install my 5000 watt power inverter. Thanks for watching.
Recomend you rewire and go for48v
Sounds like too much heat to have the fuel in the stove with the fire. Successful versions I have seen slowly drip fuel into a burn chamber from a small tube that goes to the fuel container outside of the stove.
I considered that but I just don't have a good place for the fuel tank. Thanks for watching.
Just to say, the preset voltages are more made for lead acid if uses lithium it is primarily designed to be controlled by a BMS output some of your logs appear to be a little big I would recommend changing them out of the proper size for the boat used only because it could create an issue if it becomes loose
Thanks for watching.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Hey Thomas, glad I have come across your videos. Just acquired a historic 1912 46ft Raised Deck Motor Launch Yacht. And I need to do some of this on the teak also. So helpful and look forward to see how it's coming. Sure thankful for our S. Ca weather...Cheers Capt Ron on Yacht Vessel Edna...
Captain Ron...My favorite movie. Thanks for watching.
@stormsail Ahoy, same here, it sure fits...
Hello! I’ve been removing all the teak edging to waterproof the boat as you did. What did you do at the corners? They seem pretty beefy, Are they structural? Any tips?
I think I did the corners with small pieces of ounce and a half chop strand mat fiberglass because it's hard to work the air out of the resin glassing around sharp corners. Then I sanded it down flush. Also I had a problem with the nonskid gelcoat coloring agent fading from the sun light because I used poor quality coloring agent. If you watch the nonskid videos I did you well see that I first went with a beach sand color and It started to fade after a few days then I went with kind of pink color and it faded fast too so I had to do a third coat and I used Total Boat coloring agent (a great product) and it's been five years with no fade. That's why the corners look beefy because of three coats of nonskid.
@ thanks for the info! did you remove the vertical teak on the corners (they are pretty thick) or did you just sand them down and class over?
@djhardy1988 No, I just sanded them down flush.
Great video, strangely exciting from beginning to end. The sound of the tanks popping had me jumping in my seat 😂
You should hear the tanks pop inside the boat...Make me jump every time. Thanks for watching.
Your monitor looks very similar to my BatGo monitor I have but my voltages are way off. I use my DC volt meter to see where im at. I only use my BatGo monitor to balance my LIFPO4 cells, and it does a fairly good job at that. BTW Ive gven up on indvidual cells and decided to go with LIFPO4 batteries with their own BMS/ Balancer in them.
I love my LIFEPO4 battery bank. You saw in the video that I have a second BatGo monitor and it was way off. Once I figured out that all I had was a bad monitor connection and rebooted the monitor every thing is good. Someone in the comments tells how to calibrate the BatGo monitor so you can give that a try and see if that helps. Thanks for watching.
@@stormsail i calibrated it and I will have to see if there is any difference The closest ive come to balancing when fully rested after charging the cells according to the Bat Go is 10-14 mili amp difference.10 milliamps is suppose to be the maximum difference in any one cell
A lifepo4 when stored, is stored at something like 40% SOC, since your is not stored but in use chare at 70%, should a good spot. Remove the crappy voltage monitOr, add a bms...😄
I have a SBMS, I haven't installed it yet.
Lifepo4 do not release gaz, if they do they got an abnormal internal pressure caused by overharge, voltage...amp....the valve is a security valve, a cell leaking is not reliable. A 4s like your should be charged at something like 4x3.45v. Inspect each valve (the blue oval thing) if they have not budge. If not inspect, of any leak. Add a bms....!
It could be the transformer in my charger that I'm smelling. Thanks for watching.
I dont think you should have any off gassing with lithium i wonder if a cell has over charged causing it to off gas or it's the charger making the smell... glad the battery bank tested out well we are at 3.5 years on our diy bank and it's been great.
Yeah, it could be the charger I'm smelling. Good to hear your battery bank is working well. Thanks for watching.
those bg-8s need calibration, they aren't the most accurate out of the box
Thanks for the info. and thanks for watching.
Each 3.2v cell should be connected to a BMS balancing lead. If I understand, you have connected 5 cells in parallel with a single balancing lead for the group. If so, variability in the 5 cells may not be managed reliably. A more conventional approach is to group 4 cells together and use a BMS for that group. You would then have 5 parallel groups of 4 for 12.8 V nominal. I could misunderstand or I could be wrong or both. If your system has worked without problems for a long time and you manually check from time to time, you should stick with it. However, I am concerned with the charging smell. The should not happen in normal charge - discharge operations.
I’ve been doing it this way for 5 years, and it works great for me. Thanks for watching.
@@stormsail as they get older th balance gap gets wider the more if you don't want your boat to catch on fire one day get a balancer
We have the exact same batteries wired exactly the same as yours... th-cam.com/video/2uYENzaDBY4/w-d-xo.html We've had no problems ballancing with the SBMS0
This is our SBMS installation. th-cam.com/video/SjirUYghQSA/w-d-xo.html
Where did you think I got the idea? I have a 12 volt system on my boat and when I went LIFEPO4 I bought 20 CALB cells and wanted one large 12v battery instead of hooking up 5 12v batteries in parallel. I saw your video when you were expanding your battery and noticed you had CALB 180amp hour cells like mine so I emailed Will Prowse and he made a video and said "Yes you can connect cells like this." Then he said "How cool is that?" I also have a SBMS but haven't hooked it up yet. I've been watching your Chanel off and on for years and your one of the creators that inspired me to start my own Chanel. Thank You So Much...Tom
Assuming from the dark image that's an ISDt Battery Go, those are easy to calibrate. Just go into system information. When there hold the middle button down until it beeps and do that two more times and you should get the calibration unlock screen, just copy the code as you see it to unlock.. Should easily be able to get it within 2mv.
Very Cool. I'll give it a try. Thanks for watching
Sounds like lithium clusters
Nope, not lithium clusters, just a monitor that went wonky on me. I rebooted it and it works fine. My battery is awesome. I build it five years ago and it's perfectly balanced, no balancer. Thanks for watching.
I wouldn't recommend hooking up your battery that way. You are hiding problems with the cells. It should be arranged as 5 batteries of 4 cells in parallel. You should have a cell monitor on each of the 5 batteries. I'm guessing you do have cells that are out of whack. LiFePO4 batteries don't share power very quickly especially when charging. Old cells will get out of balance. Your BMS should have a balancer but I'd recommend for old cells an active balancer. With 5 cells in series no balancer is going to be able to help. There is just too much capacity for either the BMS passive balancer or an active balancer to do any meaningful balance. I have a 24v system with 960Ah of capacity. It is divided into 4 separate batteries. Each has a BMS and an active balancer. Unfortunately they aren't the greatest cells but the active balancer keeps them in sync.
I don't think you understand how my battery is wire. I have five cells wired in parallel to create one super cell. Because they are in parallel they constantly balance them self's. I have four super cells wired in series to create one large 12 volt battery. When I bought the cells I did a capacity test on all 20 cells bringing them down to 2.5 volts each then I connected them all together in parallel and let them set for a week to bottom balance them. I built this battery 5 years ago and they are still perfectly balance with no balancer. Thanks for watching.
@@stormsail Each cell in parallel is going to show the same voltage no matter what their condition, they may have been matched and ok on first install but you curerntly have no way of testing individual cells. In place a thermal tester (point type or cheap imager) might be worth it to identify any suspiciously high cell temperatures on charge (or disharge). or pulling a known bank of cells and checking their charge / discharge characteristics and internal resistance individually. The BMS is obviously blind to any circulating currents and mismatches within a parallel section of the battery and really need to check what is going on.
Nice job, thanks
Thanks for watching.
Still leak free a year later? Just bought a Formosa 41 and need to do this!
I have no leaks around my masts. We had a lot of rain last winter and no leaks. I had a lot of leaks with the cabin so I fiber glassed over it. Please check out my first video (Boat Window Install.) I talk about the leaks I had and how I fixed them. If you have leaks you need to fix them ASAP because the plywood on these boats are poor quality, other than that these boats are awesome. Good luck with your boat, your going to love it.
good idea :)
Awesome... Thanks for watching:)
Great job thanks. i wonder would a "multifunctional garden cleaning shovel blade" be a more sturdy scraper. Cheers
That could be, I'll look into it. Thanks for watching.
@@stormsail Thank you
Next weekend, I'll be starting a 4.108 for my first time. Have had the boat for 2 months preparing. Wish me luck. Any tips? (Fresh oil, fresh ful, good battery, new alternator, new starter, strainer working, impeller on site for after compression tests.)
New fuel filters would be wise but you will need to bleed all the air out of the fuel lines. If you do that and the engine won't start you will need to loosen the high pressure fuel line at the first injector then crank the engine with the starter to bleed air out of that line. Fuel and air will come out, the engine should start running then tighten that line back down. Important... Before you try to start the engine remove the valve cover and spray some Marvel Mystery Oil on all the valve stems and lifters, flood the top end with that oil and let it sit for 30 minuets then put the valve cover back on. You may need a new valve cover gasket if the old one get damaged. Next put a socket on the fly wheel and turn the the engine by hand several times then try to start her up. Good Luck
The problem to use the drive or not is the intake in shallow water like sand in the intake!
I don't have that problem because my boat has a deep keel and the intake is several feet above the bottom of my keel so sand is not a problem but anything floating in the water can be.
You are doing great my man!
Thank you so much.
Fowling along sweet working good...

The stuffing box story reminds me of the guy who went through a bag of carrots when he knocked off a sea-cock while offshore.
You don’t need to put it in gear, you can certainly run it in neutral to flush it out. You probably do more damage by putting a load on a cold engine than flushing it in idle. Just my opinion!
Thanks For Watching.
Try a defrost cycle
I would if I could.

I love the classic design of the Formosas. If you ever want to sell your boat ... In about 3 years I'm looking for a boat of this size for my retirement. 😁 Greetings from Germany
I don't know if I'll sell, I need to do some long distance sailing first but thank for watching.
I doubt it is a transformer, sounds like a couple of capacitors that dried out !
That could be the case. Thanks for watching.
I have a 4-108. The oil pump is on a hose that I can pull out into the cabin while pumping into a container. Also find yourself a silicone container used in cooking to place under the oil filter to catch the oil that escapes when removing the filter. It’s recommended to pre fill the filter before placing it on the bracket, but it’s not really necessary. When you start the engine after the change, advance the throttle about half way. Start the engine and it only takes the a second or two for the oil pressure gauge to respond. Also you should put a quart of Lucas oil in with every change. According to the manual the engine takes 4.7 quarts after an oil change, so adding 4 quarts of oil and a quart of Lucas oil fills it slightly more. But doesn’t hurt the engine.
The oil pump on my engine is not on a hose. The last owner rebuilt the engine so he may have changed it. Thanks for watching.
Great story and advice ~ thanks for sharing !
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching.
You could try the drip design and have a line up top go down into it. Google "High Output Waste Oil Burner DIY".
Have you researched waste oil drip stoves? I use one in my pigpen and it runs for 8 hours on 4-5 gallons. Something that small could run for quite a while on a gallon. Most liquid fuels should work
Yes I have. I'm thinking of making my own Biofuel. Thanks for watching.
Maybe a 4 or 5 inch Silicone cake pan would work better. They are pliable, so can be folded to fit in the port hole, and can tolerate high temperatures. Checked on line: "Silicone 5 Inch Cake Pan Round, Set of 4" for $12. "Silicone 4 Inch Cake Pan Round, Set of 4" for $10.
Great Idea. Thanks
