WAY COOL! How to custom-build a portable fridge/freezer into a cruising yacht
What do you do when there’s no ‘off-the-shelf solution to a problem on your boat?
Well, if you’re anything like us, you design and build one yourself!
For years, we’ve been dragging around a portable Waeco/Dometic fridge-freezer as an extension to our built-in refrigeration that helps us significantly extend our cruising range.
The problem is, we’ve never really had anywhere suitable to put it.
At one point it lived under the Nav Station but that meant you couldn’t sit at the chart table because there was nowhere to put your feet.
More recently it’s been sitting on the cabin sole in the saloon where the dinette would ordinarily be.
While there’s been no table that’s been super handy from an access point of view, but obviously it was never going to be a long-term solution - when we finish renovating the saloon we do plan on reinstalling a dinette of some sort.
So when we started renovating our 'Hobbit Hole' (aka companionway between the aft cabin and saloon), we thought “this is it”. The initial measurements matched, but, like all boat jobs, there were a few challenges to overcome.
Firstly, we knew that when we re-installed all the built-in shelving and a headliner in this alcove, there wasn’t going to be enough space to remove the fridge lid.
Obviously a 50-Litre fridge full of frozen food is going to be too heavy to lift in and out so we were going to need some sort of sliding tray, like the ones you can buy for camper vans and RV’s, (e.g. this one from BCF:
www.bcf.com.au/p/xtm-fridge-slide-with-table-small/673435.html
which features in the video)
The trouble with all the off-the-shelf units we found is that none of them fit. These days bigger is supposedly better and everything we looked at was way too large for our humble Hobbit Hole.
It quickly became apparent that we were also going to need a distinctly marinised version of a sliding tray - one that we could lock in place when we’d be sailing, especially with the boat heeled to port.
The other thing about these fridges is that in high temperatures and humidity (like we get here in northern Australia in summer), they produce a lot of condensation. You can of course buy insulation jackets for them, but in our experience that doesn’t completely solve the problem and in fact it sometimes creates another one, in the form of mould.
So, what we needed was: a slide-out system, complete with condensation drainage, and a locking mechanism, all of which clearly needed to be custom-built.
Come back in time with us, and we’ll show you how we did it…
And thanks as always for watching!!

    Hello I have 1985 Kelly Peterson 46 in NZ. Under my sink is a horrible cupboard and just like you the aged water pipe fittings just snapped as I pushed them aside with very little force. Meantime I joined the KP owners forum. About 6 mths ago one of those boats had a gusher while offshore. It was a spontaneous failure of the original thru hull that drains the sink water overboard. After the boat in question had posted their story onto the forum, a reply came in from another KP also a member of the forum describing the exact same occurrence when also well offshore. There was concensus that the original bronze thru hulls will get effected by the food items coming from the sink. The effect is an invisible internal corrosion taking place on the threads of the sea cockpit. Can't say if they were the grocko brand as you have. My boat has the original bronze unit and looking well corroded. I will replace with Truedesign product b4 I splash. Don't mean to scare you, just a heads up should it be relevent for you guys.

      Thank you! This is definitely something we are looking at. We’re actually already contemplating (and pricing up) replacing all 14 seacocks and skin-fittings (we’ve already done 2 of them so 12 to go!) The 2 we’ve done are in the engine room and we’ve already used bronze for those (but good quality so they’ll hopefully long outlast us!). We’re definitely looking at True Design for the remainder. Looks like a very good product. That through-hull for the sink is about 2” so one of the larger ones (like toilet & cockpit). You definitely wouldn’t want it to let go! That issue with food waste/chemicals and corrosive reaction could easily apply to the heads as well so very worth looking into!

    Would it fit longways and then the lid would open when it slides out?

    • @brilliantsailing
      @brilliantsailing 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@frankstocker5475 unfortunately not. We still need access to the top of the fuel tank (and then there’s the breather hose just beside that spot anyway) plus it would then take up too much space in the companionway and there would be nowhere to stand while you’re getting the food out. You might be able to reach down from the cockpit but you probably wouldn’t get to the bottom of the freezer that way. It’d definitely be handy if we could have worked it so the lid opened all the way but in the end we just had to find a compromise that would at least work. Luckily those fridge lids do come off so that was the solution. The pitfalls of tiny spaces hey!!

      @@brilliantsailing great video series. I like what you are doing with the hobbit hole and am following along intently. One thing I did with another boat I had ( a Pearson 37) is I moved the fuel filler to a remote filler to the deck thus eliminating the fumes of diesel when filling and added an in tank mechanical fuel gauge so I could see at the tank when it was near full, this worked well. Your method of sizing panels with scraps of paneling is another great idea not only to size the panels but to tell whether you can fit the finished panels in one piece or multiple pieces have to be made. I have been searching for a video from your series detailing the construction and fitment of the dinghy davit structure and can't seem to locate one. I see in your video intro, Brilliant II doesn't show the dinghy davit. • @brilliantsailing
      @brilliantsailing 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, the main tanks are black iron aka steel. The fittings on those are also steel (welded). The auxiliary tank was added on by the previous owner. He probably chose that material for ease of manufacture (plus all modern fuel tanks are either aluminium, stainless steel or polypropylene - not black iron). The fittings we’ve just put into the auxiliary tank are brass and they’re isolated from the aluminium by PTFE tape, which is the recommended method. There was an original brass screw-in drain plug and original brass elbow, which we just replaced and which had been in that tank for close to 20 years, also isolated with PTFE tape, neither of which were the cause of the problem. Hope that answers your questions 😉

    • @normlarsen4803
      @normlarsen4803 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jamesmarshall2015 the tanks were only joined by a single rubber hose and the diesel that travelled from the iron tank into the aluminium tank. We think it was the diesel that carried metal-based sediment, which then had no mechanism to be flushed out of the aluminium tank and therefore accumulated over the years. In the video you can see how that corrosion is still ongoing from those bright metal sections where the sludge gets scraped away.

    • @brilliantsailing
      @brilliantsailing 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@normlarsen4803 the black iron/steel, is what the original boat tanks are made of. The aluminium tank is an add-on installed by the previous owner. The starboard black iron tank is right next to this auxiliary aluminium tank (separated by a bulkhead) joined only by one single rubber hose. There was no water in the auxiliary tank and the sediment was 100% ferrous metal-based, which makes us think it had come from the steel tank via the diesel. It then settled on the bottom of the tank, which in this case, because of the angle, was the diagonal face. Just gravity at work there!

      You certainly could use a rigid material if you wanted to but with the half-inch thickness of the hull, plus the thickness of the fibreglass deck, plus the epoxy (which, with the addition of the fibre is structural), we were happy that this was more than adequate. We’re also confident there’s no air voids, which you might get using rigid pieces of board. No we haven’t had any rudder bearing issues but we did replace a worn bush in the skeg about 10 years ago. There’s been no wear on it since.

    Hi guys. What paint products did you use? Great job.

    • @brilliantsailing
      @brilliantsailing 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! 🙏🏻 We started off using Awlgrip but switched to International Perfection, which was a little more user-friendly and easier to achieve a better result. Awlgrip seems to be designed more for spray application whereas Perfection is definitely formulated with brush-painting or rolling and tipping in mind.

    Wow, impressive job. Huge. You did a great job of fixing it. They're good boats the Peterson 44, and it will be a much better boat now! Good effort doing it in the water too. My only hesitation though would be how to keep bits of silicone and paint out of the water.

    • @brilliantsailing
      @brilliantsailing 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you 🙏🏻 Silicone and paint aren’t the problem. It’s pretty easy to keep tools/mess etc. inboard, but you do need to control the dust any time you’re using power tools, which means using a vacuum system. Thankfully most good sanders attach straight to a vacuum cleaner these days, and to be honest most of this part of the job had to be done manually (I.e. with basic hand tools like hammer & chisel, which make very minimal dust), because the join was simply too narrow and deep to fit a power tool in!

    Congrats on such a laborious task and great explanations of the repair process. My yacht has wood rot on the deck from failure of through deck screws. Your suggestion of epoxy for all screw holes is right on. One thought about your water ingress issue - does your deck have a wood core and has water got into that through the bulwark problem? Great vid thanks.

    • @brilliantsailing
      @brilliantsailing 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, and thank you 🙏🏻 Yes, our deck has a plywood core and yes, there are places where water has made its way through, but amazingly we haven’t found any rot like in the bulwarks. The next step of this whole process is removing, checking and reinstalling all the surrounding deck fittings (stanchion bases etc), which we’ll share the learnings from in our next video.

    Well done, julian. Most fibreglass boats of that age with high bulwarks would have the same problems. Your get it done attitube serves you well, would be interested to know how much apoxy resin you used. Top job.

    • @brilliantsailing
      @brilliantsailing 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you 🙏🏻 The short answer on the epoxy is a lot!!! We’re estimating somewhere around 40 litres of the West System 105 and the corresponding amount of the 403 microfibre blend. It wasn’t cheap.

  • @yachticus
    @yachticus 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    well done team - regrettably this sort of pain is inevitable. Julian maintains a pretty decent approach to what is a pain in the butt. ( of course you guys dodging rain showers in between over the weeks. On the upside - all the good work done inside the yacht now is protected from water ingress (from the bulwarks at least)

      Thank you 🙏🏻 It’s been a horrendous job - and believe it or not, it’s still not quite over yet. The good news is we’re now at the pointy end of the whole saga and yes, we’ve finally fixed the main source of leaks. Almost time to throw a party!!! 🥳

    I'm glad you are all safe! I loved this video. I've been watching for a few years and I realized with this video just how much your video editing and storytelling has improved. Bravo! I think your 360 camera bits in this video were the most enjoyable I've seen on TH-cam-I loved the way the sky wrapped around you and how the music fit so well. I also really loved seeing a bit of the older footage and Josh as a baby! My daughter is a few years younger than Josh but that brought back memories! She wants to visit Australia and I can't wait to go back (I was there for 6 months in 2012 before she was born). I'm looking forward to your next adventure on Brilliant II!

      Hi, we have a bracket attached to the solar arch on the davits, which comes forward of the panels so as not to cause a shadow. This is a temporary installation in that we don’t keep the dish up there all the time. It’s just for occasions when the system is in use.

    Great vid, really liked the different viewing angles, I would like to know how far you have travelled, is Josh learning to sail. Does Josh like sailing, I think you are more than sensible to sail in what ever season you feel is safe. I love the part of the world you are sailing in and wish you all the best.

      Thank you 🙏🏻 We’ve been sailing Brilliant II for 18 years and our longest cruise was from Thailand to Sydney, Australia, during 2006-7. Since then we’ve sailed the east coast of Australia and briefly on another boat in New Caledonia. Josh is included in the sailing when appropriate, not so much because he likes it but because it is good for him to be part of the teamwork. The most important thing is that he loves boat life. He was almost born on board so it’s been a part of his life since the start, and perhaps that helps!
