Bogota is the financial/commercial centre of the country. It is Colombia's equivalent to New York City. How much would a luxury apartment cost you in New York City? Broaden your real estate search parameters. What I've found is that comparable properties are 80 to 90% cheaper in Colombia. Take the value of your current home, and see just how much house that will buy you in Colombia. Look at a city comparable to your own. For instance, in American terms, if you live in East Podunk, don't expect to be able to afford the equivalent square footage in Beverly Hills.

Thank you for the comment, First, I advise you to speak to an international tax professional. Based on your example, you do not need to file an FBAR. Please keep in mind, if you have any other foreign financial accounts, you would combine the value of these for FBAR reporting purposes. One thing I advise clients, is to err on the side of caution and file the FBAR if you are unsure if you met the filing requirement. There is no punishment for over reporting, but the consequences of not reporting are very severe. -Dylan

Here's an interesting question: What about a situation of a dual citizen Canadian American who is taxed by the US everywhere, and has his major financial interests and connections in Canada (as a Canadian tax resident), and lives over 183 days in retirement in Colombia?? How does one avoid TRIPLE taxation?? One assumes there is no tax liability as a retired person in Colombia unless one earns money from renting/Airbnb. But if one has business activity in Colombia AND is liable for taxation in the US AND Canada, is that called triple taxation relying on tax treaties??

Your channel came up in my search for “Canadian” expats 🤔 Anyway, I wish in all your statements about “Wishing” before moving to Colombia, you’d mention more important stuff that could seriously impact anyone, from anywhere in the world who is moving to Colombia, such as: You can’t open a bank account if you are….Some landlords may charge you in US dollar instead of pesos and if you’re not American, it could drill a huge hole in your pocket…Etc, etc. Places pop up in my 24 hour radar, and most of the information I receive from expats travelling to different countries are insignificant general information that any Google search can answer, but important details that aren’t general and may skip someone’s mind to ask or research are never talked about. I know this because after watching videos, searching for answers and so on, we decided to travel from one side of the world to another, thinking that YAY, our insignificant Canadian dollar is going to go far, but only to realize that rent is paid in US dollar, which no one bloody ever mentioned anywhere! I made sure to look up properties in this country, the cost of rent or purchase, in Google, and even FB marketplace and the currency was never in USD until we arrived and boom, the hard reality kicked in. We also realized that foreigners can’t purchase any property, even with the smallest backyard, as it’s considered “Agricultural”. But does any “Expat” ever mentions any of this anywhere? NOPE.

Awesome video and thanks for the pointers. I will be retiring in seven years and my wife and I will reside in Medellin 4 to 6 months out of the year. She is paísa from Itagüí so it should be easy enough. However, the tax reporting is something I will definitely need help with, if you’re still in business. I’ve logged your company name and contact information so be on the lookout in the next few years. God bless.

Thank you for the comment. Based on staying less than 183 days, you may not be a tax resident. There are other qualifying criteria to declare income in Colombia and we are here when you are ready to talk. Yes, we work with expat clients all throughout Colombia. My WhatsApp is +1 407-864-2702. We are in this for the long haul, so when you are ready to talk about taxes between both countries, we will be here. -Dylan

You can get a nice one-bedroom apartment in a major Colombian city for $500 according to my research. It is easily $1500 for a one bedroom in most US cities and often more expensive. Where in the US is it cheaper? I'll move there instead!
