Metra and Union Pacific meet on the Northwest Line
มุมมอง 46513 ปีที่แล้ว
Union Pacific and Metra meet on the Metra/UP northwest line. I went to various stations on this line and couldn't find a UP train. So I ended up going west of Harvard into the countryside and found this UP and chased it all the way back to this crossing off of Northwest Highway (Route 14). Union Pacific trains don't run on this line often so I was determined to film this one before I called it ...

THIS IS THE FORMER MILWAUKEE ROAD DOUBLE-TRACK MAINLINE TO MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
That’s L501
Your better off going to Metra’s Union Pacific West Line Most UP freights run on that line
The bell sounds like th e-bell I thougth it’s was the other bell
Trolleys once ran there!
I heard a possibe expansion in to janesville,Wi.
@Panek911 Not many. Mostly Metra trains run on this line. Where I found this UP freight is in the description. Your best bet to see one would be after rush hour.
How many freights go thru here a day?
@BNKATO Good to know. Not many UP freights run on this line.
@BNKATO Thanks. I believe Wisconsin Central trains used to run on this line. Would love to catch one of those.
Nice catch! Freight trains are getting less and less frequent on this line since CN merged with the EJ&E RR
There is MPRPR which runs after rush hour on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday running from Proviso to Jamesville, WS than back to Proviso. Grain trains run whenever they are needed.
I do 75 in the farmlands cause otherwise you're gonna get ran off the road. 70 in the city
why
I agree same can be said for Wisconsin and the rest of Ohio.
@aossler1 Thank you.
Great bridge for taking train vids!
Travel palaza?
117 1/2- 116 1/2 speed limit: 55 your speed: 75
mile 101-100 80 mph! seriously Illinois needs to raise their speed limit to at least seventy. this is now 2012.
mile 105-104 speed limit: 65 your speed: 77
@Nachtwolf1 During the summer at sunset. Not many freights run on this line. I'm not totally sure when the freights run on this line but I think your best bet to see one would be more towards the evening.
What time of day was this? Do you happen to know if the freights here run during any particular time of day?
@HuckleB680 Thanks.
@BNforever 2009 Thanks. I hope to do more videos of interstates and trains once I get another motor vehicle. Driving through Nebraska all the way from Omaha to the border of Colorado is a long drive. If you want some excitement you could try going on highway 30 which is not too far away from interstate 80. If you like railfanning you will likely be able to catch some freight trains.
nice video. Plan on driving this way next early summer
@telitmermaid Yes, Harvard is the last stop on the Northwest line.
is that how far the Northwest line goes?
@dvferyance I think the crackling noise came from my video camera hitting the windshield.
I am not sure what causes that crackling noise I do road videos myself and sometimes here it.
Sweet!
Nice!
it might have been going slow because of the intermodel train
Quiet Zone in IA. That's not heard of.
Nebraska does not use the word MILE on their mile markers, just the digits. 169 instead of MILE 169.
Ya it sucks I want some horn action!
@ThePPPTrainAndCarFan That's not the actual train horn. It's a wayside horn. A wayside horn is a stationary horn mounted at a railroad crossing . The purpose of it is to give a more consistent warning to motorists and pedestrians while eliminating noise pollution in neighborhoods. Also by having a wayside horn the engineer on the train doesn't have to sound the horn. All of the railroad crossings in Ames are now quiet zones including this one.
@consolidationlover I don't live in Ames.
WHAT ON EARTH IS THAT TRAIN HORN SOUND???
u live in ames? i do
@js30blackhawks2010 I took this video off of Lincoln Highway just west of downtown Nevada. I believe the road was 600th Ave. Ames became a quiet zone on December 6th 2010. So there are no longer "automated" horns there.
Thanks!
Nice video! I might head out there today and do some filming myself.
@TheMikey12561 In my other videos, I filmed UP trains going through downtown Ames and at the time they had wayside horns. On December 6, 2010 Ames has a quiet zone and no longer has the wayside horns in effect. I'm opposed to quiet zones because I feel it increases the chances of accidents occuring. However, I hate the sound of wayside horns and prefer just to hear the engineer sound the horn.
@TheMikey12561 This train was sitting for a while. I believe it might've been 45 minutes to 1 hour but I should've expected the engineer to blast the horn loud because when he started the train up it was close to the crossing and by law engineers are required to sound the horn starting 1/4 of a mile prior to the crossing until the train crosses the road on the track.
@chestateegold The city of Ames put a quiet zone in effect December 6, 2010. I didn't care for the wayside horns. However, I don't like that they've put a quiet zone in because that can lead to more fatalities. Everytime you cross Lincoln Highway and are coming from the south whether it's on Clark Ave, Duff Ave, etc. there's a railroad sign that says no train horn. So that's how I knew that there were no longer wayside horns but I also read it in a newspaper.
hmm, i was there just this past weekend for an interview and i didnt hear any of those wayside horns. they just rolled right through downtown. nice catch! that dash 8 looked to be ex conrail
@rockprogmetal They eliminated the crossing directly in front of the station because people would try and beat the train. I think they also did it because say for example the back of the train stopped and left enough room for the pedestrians to cross to the other platform, the pedestrians wouldn't see another train coming from the other direction because the train would be blocking their view. Trains don't sound the horn at this crossing because it's a quiet zone.
@23CSX1 Thanks. I wish I would've been closer and had my flip video turned on when the other train was starting to blow the horn. I filmed a Union Pacific train prior to that and didn't expect another train to come for a while.
Metra blows. GO SEPTA!
