Terry Kath on guitar
BEST SONG EVER 🤯
Wow. Thanks for posting this and isolating the bass and vocals/drums. The bass is so funky. I'm really enjoying revisiting old Chicago stuff after getting turned off by the ballads in the 80s. I love Cetera's singing in 70s Chicago but now have a new found admiration for his bass playing.
@@nmtg you’re very welcome
Very great song, but so strange to hear Vince Gill singing this. It's like hearing him sing Handel's Messiah, lol. He did a fine job, though!
Down so low that hurts me so bad that I am crying so hard I will keep going north father up out of this country going far away from home it doesn’t matter to me I can’t get what I want anymore
Good track
9:20...the reason to love guitar playing...listen to Kath play those distortions
Lamm's playing here almost sounds like a guitar riff...he doesn't get the credit he deserves
So much of Terry's great guitar work, all those crazy fills, just gets lost in the recording.
One of the best "Terry & Peter call-and-response" tunes!
At the very end: "What'ya thinkin'? That's what I'm here for..." Always tugged at my heartstrings. I'm lucky to have seen Terry sing this in '77, and then Donnie sing it in '78. Part of life is accepting changes that we didn't see comin'.
Just Glorious. One of my favorites from the genius that is Brian Wilson. Vince Gill is perfection 😍
This is very interesting! I'm just now noticing (at age 71) that on the third chord change of his basic rhythm progression, Terry does a subtle descending movement, shifting the "A" note of the chord down to an "Ab" note (just before resolving back to the C chord). It jumped out at me in this video at the 0:13 mark. It gives a very different harmonic theme to the progression, but as others have said, being kind of buried in the mix, it's not really able to be appreciated when you listen to the record.
@@williamj.sheehan2001 by golly you’re right. I don’t think he or Danny or Peter could really stay stuck on the root for too long. That’s what made them a special team
@@Chicago_Podcast_Authority You got it, CPA. They were indeed a special team. Nothing quite like them, before or since! Have a good weekend!
3.18 -3.25 - shivers - wow ❤
❤
From Chicago VII.
One of my most thrilling days in radio was my name up on the Marquee along with Vince Gills the night I hosted his concert..
When it gets too tough for everyone else, its just right for Vince Gill. Kudos for sure...
Thank you for all the ISO tracks of Chicago!!
@@genescites3349 you’re very welcome ☺️
Thank you for this iso. It makes it much easier to learn the song.
@@genescites3349 no problem. Terry had so many juicy guitar parts buried in the mix
Just wonderful and unforgettable
Terry was a brilliant musician, vocalist and guitarist. So underated. Gone too young, so sad.
Robert Lamm and Peter Cetera vocals like bread and butter. How could one band have so much talent? They deserve every dollar they ever made and then some!
Wow Vince
This is everything to me
Happy to hear it ❤
Vince Gill was great as usual but does anyone agree that the piano was a bit much? I know it was a tribute to the great members of the Wrecking Crew but way too heavy handed. The piano in the S & G original was what was called for.
The imaginative and varying parts he puts down in each section are a clinic for how to do rhythm guitar.
Wow! Terry Kath IN STEREO!!! Enough said.
Sounds like a trad campus song but with a backbeat. Terry Kath was something else. Wow.
Oddly enough, THIS is probably my favorite Terry Kath guitar track. With all due respect to how incredibly awesome he was on electric guitar.
As Robert Lamm himself pointed out once, Terry was incredible on rhythm and his leads were “world-class stuff”. James William Guercio (Chicago’s producer/manager during their classic period) simply said that Terry was “a monster on guitar” and even pointed out that Mr. Kath had the most talent of anyone in Chicago.
Terry Kath, best guitar player to walk this earth..... .......miss you ❤
Bad ass Bobby Lamm
No pun intended (considering a previous pre-Chicago band he was in), but I feel that Terry Kath was the “missing link” between Jimi Hendrix (still my uncle’s fave guitarist) and Stevie Ray Vaughan (who also considered Jimi a big influence). And this iso track proves this as much in its own way as did/does, say, 25 OR 6 TO 4 or Oh, Thank You Great Spirit.
Excellent
What position is he playing the main riff?
One of my favorite songs to play bass on with Windy City... tribute to Chicago from El Paso Texas
@@jaimesolorza4186 hell yeah. Wish there were more Chicago tribute bands out there
Not only guitar mostly piano
Phenominal bass playing. Peter gets so much attention for his voice. His bass playing was stellar and up there with many of the best in the business.
Wow
Love it !!
Thank you so much for sharing this ! As a trumpet player I love to hear the isolated tracks featuring just the horn section.
@@ericmundsinger6 glad you enjoyed it
I’m glad Vince wasn’t able to back out of singing Surf’s Up. He would have deprived us of the joy of listening to him. He’s wonderful singing it.
Stunning❤
I’m sorry but Peter is better than Paul M. as a singer and right behind him with the Bass in the 70’s!!
@@rjsmith44-op8fy don’t be sorry. He’s the best bassist outside of prog guys like Chris Sauire
Think about the fact that between this concert in 2001 and now, Brian recorded and released SMILE, No Pier Pressure, That Lucky Old Sun (one of my fav's), the Gershwin album, That's Why God Made the Radio, toured with The Beach Boys for the 50th anniversary tour, toured extensively with these and the Pet Sounds albums. He and his band have reason to be proud.
Absolutely beautiful. They did it justice and then some. Can you imagine hearing this song for the first time? Mind blowing.
I don’t believe the audience appreciated this song when they heard it but it transcends time
I remember the first time I heard Vince Gill sing Surf's Up decades ago. It was on a Brian Wilson tribute DVD. My mind was completely blown away by the beauty snd perfect control of Vince Gill's voice sing such a beautiful melody. Still is.
Hadn't gotten out my bass in years until I recently heard some Chicago and remembered what a totally kickass bass player Peter is. Made me drag that ol Fender out, dust off my amp and now I've been totally digging on annoying my fiance a few times a week with a PC jam-along to these iso tracks. I'm quite rusty so its not pretty at times. 😂 Hopefully I can regain a few chops tho. Its the thought that counts, maybe?
One of the best ever
I mean.. just the bass line alone
