Thank you Russell. Our bears need help: The NCWRC is currently proposing to lengthen the bear hunting season by an additional nine days. The Commission states “Opening the bear hunting season nine days earlier will serve to change the composition of the Mountain bear harvest…” In other words, opening the season earlier will increase the number of pregnant bears killed. This will certainly change the composition of the Mountain Bear harvest as pregnant females will comprise a greater percentage of the kill. Pregnant females enter their winter den earlier than other bears. Opening the season nine days earlier allows bear hunters to kill more of the mothers-to-be. Yes, killing pregnant mothers and unborn cubs decreases the bear population. With one killing shot, the bear population is reduced by anywhere from one to five bears. Yes, objective accomplished by the NCWRC, but as a society are we morally and ethically void in the process? If you oppose the expansion of the bear hunting season and allowing bear hunting with dogs in Franklin County as proposed by the NCWRC, you can share your thoughts on-line at: ncwildlife.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_d7mDopIMdeyGSBU Or you may submit comments by e-mail to: regulations@ncwildlife.org (please include name, county, and state of residence). For all of us who are compassionate and want to stop the extreme suffering of our North Carolina bears by using dogs to kill them and who are against the proposed expansion of this killing, shame on us if we do not let our concerns be heard. Truly, enough is ENOUGH!!
