A collection of short videos depicting wildlife behaviors and wild places in the world. Through the use of trail cameras, video cameras and handheld views from a still camera with a long lens, I try to catch completely candid views of wildlife behaviors. Based out of Kamloops, BC, Canada I explore the forests, mountains and grasslands that western Canada is known for. Additionally, travel to more distant wild places often provides interesting footage.

Lone wolves

Young adult wolves remain with their natal pack only as long as they can be supported. Often they are the last to eat at a kill and may go hungry. Trying to join another group is very dangerous, if they don't life becomes very tough.
Lost in Norway's road tunnels

Norway have over a 1000 tunnels with some up to 24 km long. Many have traffic circles. They use interesting lighting to mimic natural light to help with driver fatigue.
Spotted hyenas spotted

The Spotted Hyena (also called the Laughing Hyena) is more of an efficient predator than a scavenger. Hunting in packs of four to twenty they can bring down much larger animals like zebras. It is one of the well known animals in South Africa's Kruger National Park.
Rattlesnakes up really close

The Northern Pacific Rattlesnake, a venomous snake, is a subspecies of the Western Rattlesnake and in Canada found only in the dry valleys of the southern interior of British Columbia. Rattlesnakes are shy and retiring. Generally, they will only strike non-prey in self defense, after giving their characteristic rattle warning. They are endangered and it is illegal to kill, harm, or capture them.
Bear attacks my trail camera

This Black Bear easily breaks the wire supporting the camera on a tree but luckily the braised cable prevents the bear from taking it away.

Black Bear and her cubs spent the night

After checking out my apiary's electric fence this Black Bear sow and her two cubs decide to rest for a few hours in my Ponderosa Pine tree. In the interior of western Canada.

@@wildlifebybean Ok. I was only trying to be silly because I know animals, and they do some silly things., too. I had a giant wildcat go through my gardening things once, rubbing himself on everything I had touched, and basically saying, " Take that." Then, he ran away the same way. I'd put electric mats around the outside of the wire and seeing the bear get through the wire. They are using electric mats at homes that bears are bothering and it seems to be working.

I’d craft a foldable (to a disc) cupola with finely spaced wire in the fence.
Im certain a cows pain tolerance is higher than that of a bear. I’ve have my electric fence cranked and they lean on it and lick it 😂😂. I hear it humming too lol.

I can feel this. Once inside a tunnel there is no mobile/satellite signal to keep the map/navigation working. So basically you are on your own and one wrong turn, there is no rerouting. I get the same feeling when I once got lost on the Chicago downtown roads, that runs under the tall skyscrapers with intersection every blocks.
You guys need to learn how to fence with tight barb, and alternating earth wires. Cant beat an earth wire and a hot wire with a throat in between.
A large roll of string may be necessary...

In NZ farmers often have an earthed wire in the fence as well. I.e. about the height they stick their neck through, that way they have the earth right around their throat. Also, the earthing of the unit is critical. Many years ago when farming, my base unit had 6 long earth pins driven into a swampy creek supplying the earth. The easiest way to test if your earth is not adequate is to bang a pin about 2 metres away from your existing earth pin, lay a standard against the fence to "short" the unit out, and measure the voltage between the test earth and the fence earth. If you have voltage then your existing pin is not adequate. The bear is actually completing the circuit between the earth peg of the unit and the hot wire ... so the earth peg has to be a good one. My apologies if you have tried all this stuff and I'm preaching to the converted ... but you do have my sympathies. A good setup electric fence can lay a decent-sized bull bellowing on his arse, but then we never ever had hungry bears to deal with.

Remember when I was young and saw a couple of horses... grabbed a fresh batch of grass (was probably wet) waved it around and the horses came... I put the grass in front of them and when one took a bite somehow that wet grass touched the fence and the horse went berserk and my hand snapped... we both got electrocuted... well it was a nasty surprise :-)

My electric fence has every other strand ground, 6" apart. A full 10,000 colts to the unlucky trespasser. I don't depend on ground conductivity. (Dennis)

Yes it does, unless they press firmly against the wires. That's why the wire has to be under some tension.
What you really need is a good high fence to keep bears out. Those bears will eventually destroy your bee hives trying to get away.

one. Delivers 9500 volts at about 230 mA. Problem was the lack of tension.
