An unboxing of the final production version of this game. Compass Games, design by Greg Smith At 2:48, the CAM ships are used to ward off FW-200 Condors, not ASW. At 6:15, this is showing Small (not Large) convoy. Minor errata and I have ship counters in this area anyhow which would cover it up.

Nice unboxing Chris
Nice vid Chris. I can tell by the shape of your beret that you were in the 82d….I was in Division as an enlisted medic and a FA officer……
Nice Michael. yes, I was in Eco 505, 3rd Bde. AATW.
Really interesting game! A lot of dice rolling, but clearly this is not a roll your way through the action, there's quite a bit of decisions to be made.

July tasking is handled differently than June look for part two video to explain.
At. 12:45 I searched southern position, but I should have stayed on the target that was identified and required.
Don’t you need to start from zero altitude?
No you do not. You start at the desired altitude.
At 3:05 the damage would have been repaired and at 25:20, the wind adds a (-2) so it was -4 total.
i agree with the point about the odd/even fuel counters; Thomas could you put such information on a single counter in future?
At 42' into the video, you asked about the +3 NAV at Tangmere and why it is there when you don't have to roll when coming in for a landing. You did it right. The +3 NAV is on the card in the event that you reverse course, such as after encountering a night fighter, and then have to roll to continue the mission from there after you dodge the Germans. Originally, there were no NAV modifiers on both the Tangmere and L. Zone Terrain Cards, but it came up in play testing that someone reversed course back onto those cards and didn't know how to roll the subsequent Off Course Check.
Wow! Just found this video! What a great video -- and you played it perfectly! This is one of the best "how-to-play" videos I've ever seen on my game! Congratulations!
Wow, thanks! Thomas. Have the next mission recorded but after that it doesn’t go so well for this pilot.
@@chrisschall5834 -- Looking forward to seeing it!
Did you ever find out whether you roll twice for the recon value over the West Barents Sea?
Yes you do per the mission chart. See the designer’s response below.
@@chrisschall5834 Thanks, don't know how I missed that 🙂
Thanks for the video. I just ordered the book and boxed components. Once the components are punched, will the book fit in the box with everything?
Yes it will! I used a thin counter tray and it with the maps and book fit-a bit tight but good. A full size counter tray would be too thick.
The site I ordered thin counter trays from was: Cube4me. This is in Poland so it took a few weeks to get, but, they are perfect for Historic Wings games.
@@chrisschall5834 Great, yes, I have Cube4Me trays too.
Interesting to see the balancing of risk with 6th Sense - best for dodging threats from MiGs, but also good for event rolls - so that's a cool choice, risk the bad events or save the 6th sense for jet fighters? You use them a lot in event rolls.
Lately, my missions have gotten more challenging, and I've had to use some for maneuvers. Trying to build up my pilots for the tougher ones to come.
A first-class mission play-through video! This is a great how-to video on the game! In short, MiGs and missiles aren't your only challenges in this game. To answer his question -- the VP values listed at each Waypoint apply exactly as written, even if you are overflying the location twice during the operation. You will see if you look at the Missions that the VP values vary sometimes from the first pass overhead in one direction and the second pass in the other direction. There is always value to found in PR and SIGINT capture, even if the passes are only an hour apart. In other words, you did it right.
Any chance of you posting your help sheet on BGG?
I saw it posted in the Face Book game group for Overflight - so I downloaded it there.
I've already sent it there days ago but hasn't been approved yet. It's already been superseded by the 'final' version which I will submit.
Thank you for an excellent and well-done video! First class, good sir!
For people learn e game I think in the early edition there was no die Roll to check for air support. It's daytime, fair weather so there would be an air support roll here.
Great unboxing. Just got mine. I noticed your beret….I could not see the flash very well. What unit were you in. I was with 82d AVN Bn as a medic and 82d DIVARTY as a FA Officer. Cheers. Mike
Hey Mike, I was E co 505th PIR, (TOW), 81-85. AATW, buddy.
Thanks, Chris great unboxing and very informative, and from the sounds, this is an excellent game to play
For reference, this game can be played just in a notebook, writing out the results or, if you wish, you can make your own counters and maps -- or you can buy the boxed set. The "MAG-23 system" is very flexible. A follow-up wargame book, an expansion game, is being prepared -- MAG-14 Guadalcanal -- which will be in a boxed set only; it continues the story with the Marine Air Group that replaced MAG-23 in October 1942. I hope to have that published by the end of the Summer.
Excellent job on your review! Thank you, good sir!!
Looks like there's room for an American expansion module
Great review! Thanks! I just subscribed to your channel!
I just got my copy yesterday. Compass Games have included them on an extra counter set in the latest shipping copies. They have extra counters to replace some from the main sheets which might have issues.
Just got my copy yesterday. Going to watch your videos now. Thanks!
Hope you enjoy it!
Fighting my way across the Pacific with Carrier Battle: Philippine Sea and Silent War 2.0, all while reading Pacific Crucible by Ian Toll. Will have to add this one to the new 20th Air Force game.
All 3 of those you mention are good ones for sure. I have not read Toll’s book.
I got the Toll trilogy for Christmas from my girlfriend. I am almost finished with Pacific Crucible, loving it so far.
Excellent explanation.
Hey Chris, don't worry about the cam because it understands very well. I'm waiting for mine too, nice game. I saw some Storm counters, did you make them or did you find them in the countersheet?
They were omitted from the counter sheet but Brien (designer) sent them out on CSW. I printed them out and used 4 business cards for thickness. They came out as 1" counters which I like.
@@chrisschall5834 yes I read about this on Bgg, I'll make mine too. Will you also make a video on the gameplay sequence?
Keep ‘em coming! I just my copy in
thank you, new vid up showing combat. Enjoy your game, it is a good one!
Wow, much more there than I expected 😀
Thanks, Chris very good info on the game and great playthrough
Glad you liked it Michael.
Looks fun! Thank you
Have we seen how hunters integration will work?
Caleb, I haven't done a vid on the two-player version. This game essentially, uses the same combat charts that you are already familiar with in the Hunters. The U-boat player would patrol the Atlantic (only) from French bases starting in Feb 42. He is in a type VIIC boat. The Allied player then plays the game normally with any encounters of U-boat or wolfpack involving the player. There is also a 2-player game (Allied-German) where the German player controls all the U-boats encountered. He secretly records the approach sectors and then engages using his own range and attack decisions. Finally, there is a 2-player Allied-Allied game.
Holy crap...you're just zipping through the charts and rolls and it took you 35+ minutes. I was having a helmet fire trying to follow along (I had to pause and rewind several times). Add to that a Wikipedia detour to figure out why a Town Class Destroyer gives you a minus 1 on the B-4 Attack Chart. Does that particular historical scenario start where you encountered the single U-boat or will the player have progress through each transit point? Thanks for making these videos.
hey sorry, I tend to be fast when I know the game well. Plus, I'm very new at creating these vids. You start from the home port, I just wanted to show the first encounter-to try and reduce time of vid. You roll normally but there are NO wolf pack encounters-treat those for no encounter.
@@chrisschall5834 No worries, I genuinely enjoyed both of your AS videos. I was simply curious if Greg had built specific historical scenarios that start somewhere other than a port. If you encounter more than one Wolfpack on a crossing, it could be a challenge to keep track of each U-boat attack and merchant ship's fate. Not suggesting it won't be fun, but definitely be a challenge requiring me to use a legal pad or homemade score sheet. I do that with NFA since I'm not well versed with Vassal. Looking at the Tactical Display, I notice there are black arrows coming from each green Escort Box. Escort Box C has arrows pointing at Approach C and up toward Approach A, but Escort Box D only has an arrow pointing to Approach D. Is there a limitation on an escort in a given Escort Box (say H and I ) from prosecuting a search/contact/attack another side (opposite or adjacent side) of a convoy? I've watched both videos and noticed you often take an escort to help on an adjacent side but wonder if there are less than obvious requirements (such as must be in the most forward Escort Box) to lend assistance. And are there situations where the escorts are attacked by U-boats?
@@robeyprice320, you can engage with any escort anywhere--up to you. You get penalized for the escort moving however. Also, there is a slight chance on the combat tables that the U-boats target an escort.
Thanks for posting more on Atlantic Sentinels. Looking forward to playing this at sometime in the future. Geoff
Really nice to see a game that finally centers on the escort battle for a change. Out of interest, are there rules for escort ammunition expenditure? Please post more on this game, looking forward playing it at some future time. Geoff
Geoff, yes there is an optional ammo load rule where depth charges are limited. Chris
