Jacob Shipley is a Folk-Rock Singer/Songwriter and Voice and Guitar teacher based in Brooklyn, NY. He writes, sings, and tells stories about the awkward, uncomfortable, and painful moments in life that he’d rather not repeat. Some of their music is sorrowful, some sardonic and humorous, but all of it comes from a deeply personal place that is easy to connect with because we’ve all been there. His lyrics are poignant, his voice accessible, his range impressive, and his guitar work effortless and subtly intricate. Listening to Jacob is like reminiscing with an old friend: not everything was easy, but at least we made it through.

I am orpheus right now this is very helpful i'm just really struggling with the picking
Such a unique take on “both sides now” and you know what, “I love it!”
Thank you so much! Got an Orpheus audition up and the sheet music they provided was confusing. This is so helpful! :)
Big fan of Tallest Man’s version and you’ve really captured it - beautiful work, thank you for sharing!
Just learned the whole song today, thank you so much!! Great tutorial ❤
i prefer this to his version actually 🙈
love it
Was so SCARED of breaking a string while tuning lower omg 😂
Imma be honest, I’m still just as confused 😢
Wish we were friends
Your song reminds me of some kind of tale Keep up the good work
I love that, thank you! I hope you enjoy the recorded version :)
@JacobTShipley I be sure to give it a try
I really like this live version!
Thank you! I really have a lot of fun playing this one
Would love a tutorial for we raise our cups if possible 🙏🏻
Would recommend down tuning the high E , the neck is going to pull back when you down tune the tension off the other strings, hope this saved someone a string
Would this be the same as playing Epic ii?
Basically!
We neeeed that lalala part tutorial and wedding song with the g shapes!!
Did he ever post that video of him playing it?
I'm so sorry I never got around to it - had to move shortly after this and haven't been able to make exclusively youtube content lately. I'll find somebody else for you to watch!
This one isn't exactly it, but it's a good place to start! th-cam.com/video/1bcIQ2lnHbc/w-d-xo.html
thank you so much! best of wishes
It's a song that I found out late Can you tell me the order of the codes? Introduction, main melody, etc Please give me a rough idea
Bruh why not just say string name when plucking. Saying thumb, pointer, middle, opposite middle is mad confusing. Man. 😅
I have this app, Fender Tune... and in it, it allows you to create a custom tuning if the notes aren't too high. so as far as this song goes, I can get a good tuning when there's no capo, but when the capo's on the 6th fret, the notes are too high and I'm afraid my hearing isn't good enough to get a good sound by ear. Do you know what I should do in order to have a good tuning when my guitar is capo'd on the 6th fret?
Get a physical tuner! Links to my faves here: www.jacobshipley.com/studentresources
Jacob, I love this lesson it is awesome. I have one question: The last call and response . . . when the chorus builds with "We have a wall to work upon!" boy that C-to-B/C progression just sounds off a little relative to the vocals but I can't figure it out. In fact every version I can find has this same open chord to start that line that just seems to not work. Close as I think I can get is on the C-B/C is to do it without my middle finger to give it just a little dischordant tone to it which it looks like Anais does something like that when I watch her play it live. But even that they *always* cut away right at that spot so I can't watch what her fingers are doing. Any tips on hitting it right, right at that spot? (I am actually having a lot of fun sometimes strumming it except for the bass walk)
th-cam.com/video/80YFAwJND5c/w-d-xo.htmlsi=u4NR5Aj7f7l5H7KR&t=175 Cadd9 shape? pinkie on 2nd string? Makes sense if she's doing a 2-finger B/C shape because that make it an open 4th string which would also be a type of add9?
Do you mean no middle finger in the left hand? As in the D string is completely open for both chords? That would be what I would go with. So the only strings that have fingers down are the A and B strings.
@@JacobTShipley Thank you for responding, this is outstanding.
Your voices are so beautiful and sung with emotion and I like the call and response if that's what it's called as you bring real feelings into this, the wedding to be. The guitar work is so great as I love the intricate finger picking. Thanks for sharing such talent!
Hello! Thank you for leaving me a guitar tutorial for my favorite song. But I'm not good at English and some parts are hard to understand. I don't know how to hold the rest of the codes except for the first ones in 1:15. Could you please organize the code image or explanation? Sorry for using a translator if there's anything wrong with the text😢
Do you ever do shows in Northern NJ?
I do every once in a while! The best way to keep up with my shows is either on my bandsintown or on my email list: www.jacobshipley.com (you can subscribe at the bottom of the page)
Awesome song, I've officially become a follower, especially after seeing your live show some months ago!
Great job on this little number by the both of you - really enjoyed this thank you! I caught your act once at the Red Lion a couple of months ago where you occupy the first time slot on a Sunday. I even requested an old good time folkie song that I knew would be a longshot that "anyone" would know so don't feel bad. However, I wouldn't be surprised if you actually remembered my request "ONE TOKE OVER THE LINE" by your namesake duo Brewer and Shipley in 1970 or 71 (you were pretty sure there is no relation to Jacob Shipley when I asked, lol) which was mostly why I requested that one. So gotta ask, have you since checked out the song on TH-cam? If you haven't that's cool too, no worries ; ) I think this cover would be right up your alley actually since you said you are open to suggestion. What do you think? I'd sure love to check out another live show of yours soon if I can get the time to do so. Keep doing what you do fellow Brooklyn Dude! Canarsie huh? Ok, i'm in Brighton, soon to be in Sheepshead, and have lived mostly Midwood in my 20s and 30s.
I do remember you! I really enjoyed that song - I'll make sure to add it back into my rotation so that the next time we run into each other I can play it for you :)
Oh I finally found it LOVE YOU SO MUCH This musical performance is in Korea right now and I just came back from the theater 😂 Can't help sing along this song cuz it's literally keeps playing in my head.. I need to practice the G#m chord but thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial ❤️ you are the best !!
Why did I think I could play this easily
Thank you🎉🎉
great new look brother :)
Thank you! It was time for a change haha
*crying in no capo*
I've got some Capo recommendations up on my website! Here: www.jacobshipley.com/studentresources
4 months late but handful of rubber bands and a pencil works
what about restaurants that serve meals that will feed me 4 times? I usually avoid them.
Add it to the list!
Hey Jacob, any chance you could do a tutorial/tablature for "Anyway the Wind Blows"? Really love that song from the opening of the musical.
You are SUPER!
Aww!
So good!
Thank you!
When you mentioned the suspension chord I called out "SUS!" 😅
Hi just learned this one do you possibly have the tabs for when it goes into wedding song 🙏🙏🩵
Thank you for being one of the only sources for an Epic tutorial on the guitar! Are there only the three chord positions for this song? I'm a little lost on what the position for the G# major/minors are. You laid out the other ones beautifully, but that bar chord still doesn't sound that good when I play it.
Fully bar the fourth fret relative to capo with your pointer finger (this may take a lot of strength). For the major chord, put your ring finger on the 6th fret 5th string, pinky on the 4th string, and middle finger on the 5th fret 3rd string. For the G#m, same thing just take your middle finger off. It's not an easy chord so work to build up some strength in that left hand!
@@JacobTShipley Oh my goodness, thank you so much! I'll try it when I practice tomorrow morning 😁
Any chance of getting a tutorial for Epic II(2)?
Nice composition
Sureeeeely he does hey little songbird
You do this song so well and you get the nice bass line like Neil did and you're doing it on an acoustic guitar! I liked this one and just joined at your great rendition of Tallest Man On Earth's intricate version of Both Sides Now. Thanks again for sharing such superior talent! I was your 500th subscriber and congrats! When you get to 500 do you get something special from TH-cam?
Ah thank you again! Wow 500 that's amazing! Could be a great idea to do something special :)
Nice clear and beautiful voice and guitar. I love TMOE's picking version and you're got it right on, and so free and flowing WOW! Thanks for sharing such world class talent. I liked and subscribed!
Oh thank you so much! I also love that original version it's so good.
We NEEEED more hadestown tutorials!!
this would be so much easier if you displayed chord diagrams on screen, thank you though
not trying to be a jerk but in the video he tells you exactly which chords to play and even describes exactly where to put your fingers while zooming in the camera on his hand. Theres no need for chord diagrams
Saving everyone who has an Orpheus audition. Thank you!! (I mean what? Who said that? Not me. 🤷🏻♂️)
Ive been playing guitar for 11 years. there are some things im really good at at this point, but some basic things i just literally cannot do no matter how many years I practice. Barring 2 strings is one of them. I can play a full bar chord and have it ring out. I cannot, absolutely can NOT, bar only some strings on the guitar. Even power chords I can't do, because of the inconsistency of the pressure applied by the pointer finger. Do you have any tips for how I might be able to help this? Example: I can play songs like Bleecker Street by Simon and Garfunkel with complex fretting and picking patterns, I can also easily play every other Hadestown tutorial you've made, but I can't play Wedding Song in the shape you're teaching. My hands just don't do it. When I stretch the ring and pinky fingers to do the hammer-ons, the bottoms of ring+pinky are slightly touching the string below and muting it. When I try to curl my fingers to unmute the string, my pointer finger lifts off slightly and the string starts buzzing. Could it be a problem of grip strength? Hand size? Flexibility? It feels like I am physically incapable of squeezing the neck hard enough, even grunting/straining, squeezing literally as hard as my muscles will squeeze, I just can't do it. Any other long-time/more advanced players who have this problem?
If you haven't gotten the open A with just the pointer finger, that's a great place to start - same with an F chord with the pointer covering the 1st and 2nd strings. It could be an issue of any one/a combination of the things you've mentioned and starting smaller is the best way to build it up!
@@JacobTShipley Not gonna lie, I didn't actually expect a response, and I feel quite surprised and appreciative. I think that's good advice, saying I should just step back and focus on selective pressure application in bar chords. You're right. I have to keep in mind that playing guitar for half my life and being able to play on the more advanced end does not mean I have mastered the basics. Thanks!
@@charliesuchi85 aha as a teacher I gotta help if I can. It’s a journey! We’re all still working on new/old things. It’ll come quickly I’m sure

Thank you! Hopefully they keep coming!
Damn mate. I have been searching YT for covers of TMBTP a bunch of times yet yours never showed up unfortunately. However today the algorithm placed it on my feed and i am so grateful for that coz after listening i immediately saved it to my favorites playlist. Thanks a ton for such beautiful cover, great singing and smooth guitar playing. I enjoyed listening to it just as much as u enjoyed playing... great vibes.
Oh damn thanks so much! I love this song and I'm so glad you enjoyed the vibe! Means a lot.
@@JacobTShipley You have real talent mate. I wish u to put it to good use and benefit from it in some ways. 🙏 EDIT: Subscribed to your channel only to discover u are a voice teacher and are doing gigs and all that. Very happy to know that your talent is spreading in such beautiful ways. Blessings in and out.
