Why does everyone HATE Zelda Tears of the Kingdom now!?!
Tears of the kingdom use to be loved by many but over the past year it seems that this game is starting to get a whole lot of flack, and the big question on many peoples mind is.... why?

Sounds like people are mad that it’s basically something that should’ve been DLC. I haven’t played it yet. But that’s what I keep hearing. A recycled world with some new features. That’s what some of these videos I watch keep saying.
Its the new thing to do, youtubers cant form their own opinions.
I don't think the game is a mere glorified DLC, but it's not quite worth the $70 price tag. Here's my opinion though: First, as the honeymoon phase ends, players are beginning to scrutinize the game more critically. Second, although it's not fair to call it DLC, some features like ultra hand, caves, and the skies were intended for "Breath of the Wild" but were excluded due to time and resource constraints. Third, the game developers promised more traditional elements like a linear story and traditional dungeons. While these elements are more traditional than Breath of the Wild's iterations, they didn't fully meet players' expectations. Many anticipated an open world with a clear linear path. Lastly, the sheer size and complexity of the game make it less replayable compared to "Breath of the Wild." I've replayed "Breath" many times, but I can't bring myself to replay this game. Moreover, after playing it, I lost interest in replaying "Breath," leaving me in a limbo where I don't want to revisit either game.
Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom didn’t ‘change’ Zelda’s formula. It was returning to what it has always been. The linear games were a necessary step in the series evolution, but they weren’t the heart of it.
I'd argue linearity and traditional Zelda became the heart when 30+ years of games exist.
I love ToTK. I've been a huge fan since the 80s. They are ALL great. There were people that hated OOT because they thought 3D ruined it. 😂
The switch up of totk happened day 1 in my experience There was always people who never like it People hated the game very early on the problem is haters keep talking or making videos why it sucks even a year later while people who enjoyed it have moved on to the next game. Traditional fans are absolutely obsessed with hating totk instead of playing something else.
I honestly LOVED my time with TOTK, more than BOTW. That being said, I think there is a LOT of missed potential - doubly so because BOTW also had a lot of missed potential that I was expecting TOTK to catch up on. Instead it does, honestly indeed, feel like a huge BOTW DLC. Everything that was lacking with BOTW, that je ne sais quois, is still missing in TOTK
I despise botw/totk because of the breaking weapons and the weakened master sword. Those are my biggest issues.
Many people understood that Botw was supposed to be a set up game, something made to establish a new Zelda formular going forward and then Totk was announced as a direct sequel with all the implyed benefits that could come from being a sequal then the game dropped and all that potential was left basically untapped, no bigger or better story to be told, no bigger more ambitious ideas for world design just more world, sky islands that could have had massive environmental story telling with elements from Skyward sword ignored for "the zonai", better dungeons organically woven into the world.... pffff nope just divine beasts 2.0 same simplistic puzzle copy pasted on 5 new area's,
Because no matter how cool the new gameplay elements are the story that continues from it's predecessor is weak as hell. Aonuma designs these games stories around the gameplay and it worked when these games were more linear and it barely worked in botw because of the nature of link being an amnesiac in a broken world a century later. But in totk the way the story is presented just doesn't work also the scrubbed pieces of lore that feel oddly absent from the last game to randomly insert zonai lore that isnt setup at all solely because it's a gameplay related change is a disservice to the storytelling. That aspect of the game feels incredibly lazy and they could've done more in that regard. Makes totk go from being a fun game to play to it might be fun but as a sequel it's not good.
Been listening to a lot of retrospectives recently and couldn’t help but wonder the same exact thing. Haven’t gotten around to beating the game simply due to time but currently replaying botw and it’s been a lot of fun. Excited to finally get to tears of kingdom and finish it through completion.

Question is how did every critic gave it a 10/10 at release
Critics are marketing. Everyone knew totk was going 10/10 before it released.
I might be one of the few who prefer tears of the kingdom over breath of the wild
On my Switch, I probably play Tears Of The Kingdom more than any of my other games. (Including my most recent purchase, Echoes Of Wisdom.)
Im currently playing thru totk now (late i suppose) it got the same feeling of going around like i did in botw but only things i can say i dont like is the way to get gear its alot more to farming then it was in botw but means more to play however it feels prettt stingy on certain resources i.e (rupees and arrows)
I think a lot of Tears of the Kingdom's initial popularity came from the wow factor. Everyone remembers their firsts in that game. Discovering the Depths for the first time, the thrilling buildup to each temple, figuring out what happened to Zelda, and that EPIC final boss fight... Tears REALLY delivered on its spectacle. But now people have seen all that, and there are no more surprises. Now the fans look at how much you actually have to do to 100% the game, and it A)quickly gets overwhelming, B)is largely derivative of Breath of the Wild, and C)feels pointless because you get crap rewards for most of it.
They don’t
I feel the need to clear up something. There actually hasnt been a sudden sprouting of hate on totk, it’s just that now that the hype has settled, people who had always had issues with the game (or just hate it for whatever reason) can now voice their opinion. It’s always a small minority of people that dislike the game. Most people that loved it still loves it. I still love it. However, some people had always had issues with, say, the story of the game or the lack of shiekah tech, etc. If they were to make a video on why they hated totk during the hype time, they’d be slaughtered alive, but now they can because the hype died down. I think this is a pretty natural thing that happens with most games. I remember when botw came out and everyone was calling it a masterpiece, fast forward 2 years and a small collective of people are hating on the game after the hype died down. This always happens.
I love watching the same cutscene 4 or 5 times! Cant wait to replay it to make it 10, 15, 20 times. wtf was nintendo thinking?!
I really love pausing and opening up a menu every 30 seconds, and I love finally thinking I found something really cool just to be disappointed with another shrine.😅
Ok so the thing I’m noticing is people complain about TOTK being basically just DLC. That’s the actual issue with TOTK. The only thing wrong with BOTW was the divine beasts being way too short and not giving us the classic dungeon experience. THATS IT. “People are tired of open world Zelda”… not really. We played TOTK and got tired of essentially playing BOTW again. BOTW on its own was amazing but TOTK was so similar that it was like playing it again. The main problems with TOTK was the way it told the story the exact same way, they reused the BOTW map and just added onto it. Too many similarities. That doesn’t mean the formula was bad. It just means that repeating the same exact formula was a bad idea. New map, new way to tell the story and new art style would have solved this issue even if they screwed up on dungeons for a second time.
This is crazy talk… I don’t think we will ever see a game that does as much with its environment. The story in Breath of the Wild, which again the game as a whole is amazing, the story is absolutely shitty, the only thing bad about the game, everything else is absolutely amazing. TOTK mechanics are unreal. Nothing is like it. The depths were a huge surprise, just craziness. The story improves everything that lacked in BOTW. My one gripe is that the lynels are way easier in TOTK.
I don't.
Funny how people of Hyrule just refuse to remember Link even after he singlehandedly resolved world threatening problems
That's my complaint. How do you forget the guy who saved the world?
@@johnhoran9840 Because most of the denizens of Hyrule legit don't know you, haven't heard of you, or in some cases just straight up forgot. It sounds absurd, but Link does ALOT, like, the VAST majority of things to save Hyrule, with no witnesses around, and this is actually a subtle theme throughout the whole series: A hero destined to save the world, living forever in the shroud of obscurity, as Midna puts it directly to you in Twilight Princess. Hyrule's technology and communication are more sophisticated than in real-life medieval ages, but they're comparable. Stories don't get around and the ones that do get telephone-gamed into meaning nothing. The hero's action changes. The hero's IDENTITIY changes. He's a child, he's a man, he's a kokiri, he's a fairy, he's a wolf, he's a rabbit from the sacred realm, he's whatever your grandpa told you by the fire. A "legend" in the absolute truest sense of the word.
@@christianpickhardt4105 I like what you did there.
11:17 That's a racial slur
I still love tears of the kingdom 900 hours in the game on my 3rd play through. Probably my favorite game of all time
Same
I don't know a single person who doesn't believe totk is great. This guy is goofy
Botw is easily the most overrated game of all time. Totk is more of same. Crap story, combat, exploration, rewards, voice acting, inventory.
Also leave botw it was the first open world Nintendo doesnt have an excuse eith totk
Yikes. Clickbait title. The premise is made up.
It’s not clickbait, it’s basic logic. Likewise, people DO indeed have good reasons to hate ToTK.
@@Sagasking14 No they don’t :)
@@RavenGamingOverLord Wrong, because they do. -The game reuses the entire map and basically does nothing to correct the problems with Breath, such as the map being too big for the lack of major content found in it. -The game was originally meant to be DLC, but it was blown up into a $70 game, despite being virtually identical to the original. -Combat wasn’t improved, and was somehow made even worse by the Zonai devices trivializing what was already barely functional combat even further -The Sages are an enormous downgrade to the Champions in terms of story relevance, gameplay, and even methods of interacting with them -Armor upgrades are more of a chore than last time, since the devs tripled the amount of material-gathering busywork as before -The pitiful excuse for a story proves how badly one can attempt to tell a story in a nonlinear fashion, what with how easy it is to see the ending first -There’s even more Koroks than before, and once again, going out of your way to get them is a waste of time since you’re not rewarded for your efforts, AGAIN. There’s more than just those, but yes, people have every reason to hate ToTK overall.
The zelda cycle. Duh.
Wut
I think Nintendo was just trying something different with these two games. I’m pretty sure that when the Switch 2 comes out they will probably go back to those traditional formats.
Game just doesn’t need to exist… I’m a massive Zelda fan, ocarina of time and botw are two of my fav games of all time, but this is just botw recycled… never in 30 years of gaming have I ever played a sequel that’s literally on the same map? The sky islands and depths are just boring don’t really add anything, and I don’t buy the temples in totk are better, I preferred the divine beasts 🤷♂️ not a fan of the new fusion and all the gadgets feels like im playing a Lego game? The mechanics of trying to shoot a fire arrow you have to combine two items is headache, bad game mechanics, the champion abilities are better in botw and easier to use, botw is better in every way for me but also because it was done first, this doesn’t feel like a sequel just feels like a remix, as similar as majoras mask was to ocarina of time at least it was on a new map etc so it felt different enough. I didn’t even bother to complete totk got bored half way and put it down haven’t picked it back up 🤷♂️
People sentiments didn’t change about the game. People are just starting to notice the complaints. I’ve felt this way are botw. Both of those game are just not Zelda games imo. Everything that defines what Zelda game is. Since it’s iteration. Is absent from both of those games. That is the main, and valid complaint
Because most people are sheep, and just try to imitate whats trending. As times goes on all this gets watered down. Just follow the trends.
My biggest problem is they removed so much from between BotW and TotK, namely weapons and Sheika stuff. I loved TotK but i missed a LOT of weapons and especially the undamaged weapons
Good video man. Got a new subscriber
This is what happens when u cant think for urself
"im so bored of open world zelda" dude stfu theres literally been 2 open world zelda games. if 2 games with no switch up is too much for you you shouldve gotten sick of the original zelda formula after ocarina of time
Exactly!!!
Did you ever stop to think why many players are sick of the open world formula after only 2 games while the old formula that ran for almost 30 years is praised to the moon and back? Maybe you need to stfu
The „Zelda cycle“: 1. Game gets out. Noone played it yet. You love it until you‘re done. 2. Review the game. Sadly most of the time the game is worse than the previous one. -> hate 3. Next game comes out (loved, then hated again, see point 1 and 2) 4. Previous game gets revalidated and was better than the new one -> Previous game is loved again. It‘s a sign of decrease in quality… it‘s inevitable when the 3D Zelda franchise started with the perfect game that was OOT… TOTK has the weakest story in 3D Zelda history. I couldn’t finish it. A Zelda game without a decent story is a game that I will skip… that being said: I think I’m gonna have a blast with Echoes of Wisdom.
Story was god awful and the characters were cringe
Botw and Tok weren’t the first non linear game the first Zelda is non linear and alttp lets you do dungeons in any order for the second half oot was the first to be completely linear and carry that tradition until botw
Nintendo should just play through Majoras mask, and copy everything but different. No more food for replenishing hearts or any of that nansensu
People like jumping on bandwagons. Whether good or negative. And right now it's popular to hate on it.
Wait people took issue with you not mentioning what you like?? Screw them, the integrity of professional criticisms has wavered enough
People don’t have an issue with botw, and unlike every Zelda that other comments are anecdotally mentioning it was loved at first and hated as peoples opinions developed.
I think you’re projecting most of your disappointments on us lol I don’t see that much people “hating” it as much as you describe in your video. But this video is valid
Totk has the worst zelda story ever told.
My main issue is how the plot makes no sense. How the heck all the mess caused by Ganondorf centuries ago that are present in Tears were hidden during Breath? Also they never explained well enough the relationship between Calamity Ganon and Ganondorf. So yeah, Tears ignores 90% of Breath because for the sake of lazy convenience.
Technically speaking, the first 2 Zelda games were open world as well. Just 8bit. No real direction given, you had to explore them
