Ian Dearden at The BUg 10 12 2024
Two original songs ('Out of View' & 'Fragments') about growing up in central Queensland - on a property east of a railway siding, CWA hall and school at Gindie.
Recorded in a blackboard set at The BUg Folk Club the same night (10.12.2024) as other members of my songwriting group 'Smiths & Others' presented a songwriters in the round set.
Enjoy!!

Fragments (demo version 2011 - with photos)

I released 'Fragments' on my debut album in 2014, and much later published on this channel a photo montage video with photographs supplied by my father Rob Dearden, using the released version of the track. Long before I did my version of the video, Rob cut a photo montage video himself using many of the same photographs, plus quite a few other photographs from the same era, and set it to a demo...

A lovely 2 song set with my friend David on the blackboard of my favourite folk club - The BUg (Brisbane Unplugged Gigs), New Farm Bowls Club, 969 Brunswick St, New Farm, Brisbane, Qld. The best listening venue in Brisbane - every Tuesday night!! David can be found there most Tuesday nights shooting great videos of the performers - this time it was him and me!! 00:38 Carmelita (Warren Zevon cov...

The Bug Folk Club can be found each Tuesday from 7.00pm at the New Farm Bowls Club, 969 Brunswick Street, New Farm, Brisbane, Queensland. There are always two booked acts each week AND three ten minute open mic (walk up) blackboard slots (actually a whiteboard, known as The Bugboard)!! It's a fabulous tradition and caters for performers of every level, from those who appear on the bill, through...
The Clown (1976) - Ian Dearden

In 1976, I recorded a demo tape as an audition to join the Guild of Australian Songwriters (Qld). There were three songs on the tape, recorded in the bathroom of a residential college at the University of Queensland (Kings College). I had just turned 19. This particular song (the first song I ever wrote) was written when I was 16, in year 12. It was subsequently recorded on my debut album, "Wha...

More from the Tascam 244 4 track Portastudio archives. I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it by a Scottish folksinger (name long since forgotten) at the Crypt Folk Club in the crypt of St Martin-In-The-Fields Church, Trafalgar Square, London in May, 1981. Originally written by Scottish poet Robert Tannahill with composer Robert Archibald Smith as "The Braes of Balquhither", it...

More from the archives of my Tascam 244 4 track multitrack recording days!! This track, from 1990, was a demo version which finally found a release (in a professionally recorded version) on my debut album, "What Took You So Long?" released in 2014, That released version of the song can also be found on TH-cam at this link: th-cam.com/video/SCla8QMaIXE/w-d-xo.html This demo version features flut...
Rainy Day Regrets - Tryst

Another recording from the vaults. Tryst (Chris Maxwell - vocals; Michael Gunn - Voclas/guitar; Ian Dearden - vocals/guitar; Robin Hay - Vocals/bass/recorders) was my university era folk group. We did a mixture of covers and originals. This is a song I wrote around 1977/78 - it was certainly well-entrenched in the Tryst setlists in 1978 (in Michael's distinctive architecture student handwriting...
Grandpa Goodbye - Ian Dearden & Chris Maxwell (Green)

Written in 1977, after the death of my grandfather Edgar Dearden (1894-1977), this is another song that my university folk group Tryst (Chris Maxwell (Green), Michael Gunn, Robin Hay, Ian Dearden) performed regularly, but wasn't recorded until 1984/5 on my Tascam 244 Portastudio. By then, it was just Chris and me in a guitars/vocal version. It's a little rough around the edges, with some tape/r...

More from the Tascam 244 4-track Portastudio recordings from the mid-1980s. This one is fairly crusty - despite my best efforts, there is only so much audio restoration tools can do. There is a certain lo fi charm to it, though!! More importantly, this song by Cyril Tawney, written in the 1950s when he was in the Royal Navy & stationed in Malta, is a masterclass in storytelling. In just a few s...
4ZZZ advert circa 1980s - Ian Dearden

So here is something a little different - a Brisbane student radio station advert recorded by me on the Tascam 244 4-track Portastudio circa 1984/85. I can't, through the mists of time, recall if it was ever used. If not, it should have been!! Based on a famous quote from the 1970s!! Enjoy!!

In 1978, Tryst (Chris Maxwell (Green) - vocals; Michael Gunn - vocals, guitar; Robin Hay - vocals, bass; Ian Dearden - vocals, guitar) performed live 'on air' at student radio station 4ZZZ (known then as 4ZZ) situated at the University of Qld Student Union complex. Before the set, we recorded a practice session on a two track reel to reel, and some (but not all) of that recording has survived!!...
