these videos and contests are ridiculous. let a dog be a dog. i got my leo as a rescue, i wasnt seeking out a particular breed, i volunteered to foster and we became attached. a dog shouldn't be forced to train everyday, it should be allowed to run and play, get muddy, roll in the grass, and play with other dogs. thats what a dog's life should be. love then and make them happy

What makes you think these don't also do that as well? I know plenty of people including somebody who showed their Leo at crufts twice but met up with us and our 1st leo on the moor and they ran around hot covered mud swam and acted like "real" dogs I'd vet money on these also were allowed to act like dogs. They also have strong bond from all the grooming it takes to keep these dogs coat in amazing condition for shows. The dogs love doing it and if they don't I don't know anybody who would force them to as they wouldn't show their best and that would result in not getting placed so a waste of time, effort and money 🤷‍♀️

5:25 What happened with the population in 1958/1959 and 1962/1963? I don't know how you calculate the genetic diversity - is it possible that a breed has less than 1.0 founders? 16:00 1st generation = 2 parents 2nd generation = 4 grand-parents 11th generation = 2048 great-...-grand-parents 2048+1024+512+256+128+64+32+16+8+4+2=4094 Means 12 generations are necessary to have more than 8'000 ancestors written on the paper, even 13 when you count the child from the 2 parents as a generation. This sentence was worded pretty vague. In the beginning, Mr. Oliehoeks says that it's not possible to increase the genetic diversity when you only breed with descents from the founders, in the end he says you can INCREASE (not "keep") the genetic diversity when you breed every single descent from the founders. Which fact should the viewer believe now? And why were mutations and evolution never mentioned?

I found this video very interesting. So far I am running about 3.7% COI in my breeding program. I have always thought that outcrossing is the best!

3.7% to how many generations? Less than 30 generations is really useless

  • @karenhindson1695

Please be aware that NONE of Essig's Leonbergers aka "founders" can be found in any Leonberger today, given that he kept no records and it would appear that by the time any kind of record keeping was put in place none were recorded. And you say that the Leonberger only had 10-20 foundation members. I would have to question that given that both landrace Anatolian and the verified Newfoundland cross actually contribute to the foundation dogs. Whilst the comparison with the Icelandic Sheep dog and other endangered species are interesting, it only highlights the absolute necessity to out cross. Popular Sires are killing every pure bred dog. In a closed population regulated by registering bodies, it is a hopeless case. You cannot increase genetic diversity without outcrossing!

Do you have any information, as to the way forward? I am extremely interested in proactive breeders and how they hope to achieve, what they need in order to preserve a very beautiful breed.

@Ivy No I don't have the answers. Perhaps the author of this video could answer his total lack of addressing the real issues regarding a closed gene pool. Trying to breed for low COI,s is a short term band aid. Has anyone wondered why that neither the author nor the owner(s) of the the promoted database in this video has bothered to comment further?
