    Hi handsome! Thank you for sharing this video. Do you have any idea about why my ramshorn snails eat my plants? They ate red root floaters, bucephalandra, anubias, java fern, aponogeton and also my once super lush riccia fluitans! Moss and hornwort never got touched though.

      Great question! I’ve seen mixed results with ramshorn snails and planted tanks. It seems that they can be opportunistic plant eaters, but seems rare and maybe based on the specific specie of ramshorn snail. This usually implies there isn’t enough algae and detritus to support them so they turn to the plants. Likewise, they will eat decaying plants so they can look like they are eating them when they really aren’t eating live plant. Maybe they got a taste of plants from this but sorry to hear! I love bladder snails and recommend them the most!

      Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it! That’s a great question! I’ll preface this by saying I haven’t kept turtles myself but have seen countless videos and posts on them. From my understanding, turtles love to disrupt plants/soil in tanks and love to remodel! This can change with species and even by turtle personality, so if your little friends seem friendly towards plants then I think it’s a great idea! Either way, if you have a large gravel cap, enough that that can dig a little bit and not stir up the soil, then I think this would be a great approach to an easy and natural looking tank. With a deep gravel cap it would be better to buy larger plants that you can easily root deep into the substrate! I see a couple resources online talking about successful turtle walstad tanks so i would look there for more details! -Kyle

      I had red sliders, honestly low tech no chance. red sliders require so much water volume in the wild, lots of rain and drainage too. imagine having pigs in a pen compared to wild pigs in the woods. there will be more waste than a squarefoot of tank can handle without intervention

    • @RootsReefsandReactions
      @RootsReefsandReactions 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the additional information! I agree with your point, that the size of the tank required for multiple turtles may push this beyond low tech and would require strong lighting and filtration.

    Isn't the whole purpose of the Wahlstad method to not need a filter?

    • @RootsReefsandReactions
      @RootsReefsandReactions 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Really good question and depends on who you ask! Diana Walstad originally said no filter, but later suggested a filter would prove beneficial for water flow and particle filtering. My filter has only coarse filter pad, helping filter large particles while still allowing for them to be broken down naturally. The skimmer also aids in water clarity and removing biofilm which can inhibit the tank oxygen and CO2 levels!

    So it is normal to have biofilm on top? I recently just built my Walstad and it is creating some on top. Would that harm any of the plants from getting light or does the environment or ecosystem that I just made need that film on top? Will it ever get excessive, and should I get floating plants?

    • @RootsReefsandReactions
      @RootsReefsandReactions 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Tardis welcome to the channel! While yes it is common to get biofilm on top (I did as well), its best to mitigate it. Biofilm lowers the exchange between the air and water, increasing chance of incorrect oxygen and CO2 levels in the tank. This may decrease light penetration, but not enough to worry about; focus on the issue above. The best way to decrease biofilm is getting a skimmer, this can be a separate unit or attached to your current filter. If this isn't possible, try to agitate the water surface as much as possible with a pump/filter/wavemaker. Daily cleaning can get rid of biofilm, but some systems will always produce it so finding a long term easy solution is recommended. Cheers!

    Appreciated and thumbsed upped. Appreciate the links to the products and surprised the cabinet costs so much, although it is a nice cabinet. Is it solid wood or particle board? Nice tank! Ever had any issues with cyano bacteria?

    • @RootsReefsandReactions
      @RootsReefsandReactions หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Bioscapist yeah was definitely more than what I was hoping to spend, but we liked the look and wanted a local pick up. I believe it’s mixed material with the main parts being particle board. It’s “rated” for 40 lbs, but find these numbers to be mostly made up haha and feel it’s very sturdy but wouldn’t go much heavier than this 7 gallon tank. And cyano was the bacteria I mentioned having for about a week. It grew on a couple smaller rocks maybe 2 weeks into the tanks life and has never returned. I run a 4 on 4 off 4 on light cycle recommend by Diana Walstad and think this helps a lot with not overdoing light. Hope this helps!! Thanks for watching 💕
