Yo what is the minimum age of doing this in Canada bc and can I do it without a high school degree?
I'm honestly not sure.. I don't think there is an age limit. It really comes down to if the employer gets you signed-up as an apprentice and starts training you. Most of the work is something you learn on site, and can be learned by anyone willing to learn it with good work ethic! The high-school degree & classes are typically recommendations to give you an idea of what you'll be learning in the schooling of becoming an electrician. But they break down everything as you go along in class.. so if you can learn & memorize, you will be good there, too! becoming-an-electrician.com/
What’s the agency or organization in Ontario to start looking for an apprenticeship?
I'm not sure.. My apprenticeship was in British Columbia. A quick search engine query gave me this link: www.skilledtradesontario.ca/trade-information/electrician-construction-and-maintenance/ Try my free apprentice electrician book to prepare yourself before you jump in!: becoming-an-electrician.com/optin/5-tips-apprentice-electrician-book/
@ hey man… thanks for replying. I reached out to one in my area (GTA) but they aren’t taking any apprenticeships anymore. Market is cold :( Btw, I signed up for the apprenticeship prep book of yours but I didn’t get the email link. I did get your “welcome to splice wires series though”.
@@boomerang0101 Okay I resent the eBook.. hope it was to your proper email 👍 I would actually call electrical companies, or actually go out and hand in a resume. Or, see if you can sit down with who's in charge of hiring and tell them your situation that you want to start the trade.. tell them you've been reading & watching tons of videos and trying to learn and want to start.. they may bring you on as an apprentice and teach you as you go (that's the approach I took.. no pre-app) becoming-an-electrician.com/
Is there a resciprocity between Canada and the USA?
Can you explain further? Do you mean does the same knowledge apply to both countries? Or, is your ticket honored in both countries? becoming-an-electrician.com/
@BecomingAnElectrician Is your education honored in both countries, or as you put it ticket
@@steamboat1341 I don't think it is. The Canadian Journeyman Ticket I think is just honored in Canada (every province except Quebec I think..) - Rules change so often, so that is why I'm not 100% sure. But cross country, no, the ticket will not work, just within Canada. If you are coming from another country, you can challenge the Electrical Journeyman Ticket by taking an exam I think.. you'd have to reach out to a training institution to learn more before proceeding! becoming-an-electrician.com/
its weird that only in BC you can get right into work without any certificate etc everywhere else you need pre - app it seems from what i have looked into - totally down to be wrong if anyone can help
I'm not sure about other provinces.. but pre-apprenticeship is a path you can take that gives you first year of schooling, plus some hours to your apprenticeship. It's also much more in-depth hands-on compared to actually doing first year of schooling without pre-apprenticeship. I would go and ask electrical companies in your area that you're wanting to start the electrical trade.. and do you need pre-apprenticeship? I didn't start with it (in British Columbia): becoming-an-electrician.com/
Do u have a video on how to twist two or 3 stranded wires together?? Do I pre-twist each wire first and then twist them together? I am twisting two 12 gauge stranded to one 18 gauge stranded and want to figure out the best connection. Thanks!
Not yet. Will be coming out with videos here in coming months now that my back-end tools are almost fully implemented for organization going forward. To answer your question, there's no real best way.. but it's important all the stranded wires are touching, and not just a couple loose strands, to ensure the wire's rating is honored. In your case, I'd probably put the two stranded #12's together and gently hand twist them, then hand twist the #18 individually so all its conductors are tight, then hand twist the #18 to the #12's a bit harder. The biggest thing is making sure you do a tug test on the wires once the wire nut (marette) is on, making sure that no wires can pull out. (Often stranded wires can easily pull out of wire nuts.. so the tug test is a extra precaution!) becoming-an-electrician.com/
Pigtailing the neutral here makes it easier to change the light in the future, much easier than pulling out that massive mess of wires and un nutting all of those neutrals every time you want to change the light fixture which happens every few years. I do agree that the Box could be more tidy though
It depends the situation. In a commercial setting, dealing with #12's and multiple wires, like 5-6 wires in a splice, yes pigtails here would be easier. But in a residential setting, with #14, it's not necessary, and makes the box even messier / harder to push the wires back in. Ideally, you should not run power to the light box, which would even further reduce wires in the box. Power should be run to a switch, then bring the switch leg up to the light box (what turns the light on / off). becoming-an-electrician.com/
I made this mistake a few times thanks
Yeah, running power to a light switch is a lot easier for maintenance.. no need for a ladder or taking down a light. Also nowadays boxes need a neutral by code for smart devices, so lots of benefits to bringing electrical power to a switch box first, then working off that. becoming-an-electrician.com/
I’m based out of Ontario. With the pre app would that give your the level one or not? Or you still have to work and get the level one?
Electrical Pre-Apprenticeship typically gives you your first year of schooling & some hours.. don't think you automatically go to level 2, but it helps you advance a little quicker.. but it does cost money & time. You can also try applying to employers and see if you get hired that way too, explaining you want to change careers. With Pre-Apprenticeship sometimes they can help you find work afterwards, and also be a helpful resource of someone to talk to and answer your questions: becoming-an-electrician.com/
Hey I’m considering becoming an electrician. I have no clue what I’m walking into but I need to decide a career. Do you consider me watching your videos. I watch the first one but was really confused. I’m good at math but I done want to give up. I’m 36 and don’t want to do plumbing because I want the longevity of my body. I was a fairly lazy person but I need to do something or I’m going to be homeless. I’m not a book smart person. I need to get into something my ex dumped me so I’m kind of all over and cooking in a kitchen is not it only making minimum wage working 15-20 hours. I’m based in Mississauga and wanna go towards Oakville Burlington. I want to move out the city and start a life. Haven’t been working for 9 months now and haven’t looked into the future. I was a weed heard couch potato lazy guy & I can’t be that anymore in life . Just highly stressed as you can see from my long message. Just looking for help and advice
My videos are based on Canada Electrician rules, so they should help you along. First get your resume ready and hand out to employers, you can watch the videos in your spare time. There's lots of resources on my website, too. You can start with my free Apprentice Electrician Book: becoming-an-electrician.com/optin/5-tips-apprentice-electrician-book/
@@BecomingAnElectrician Where are you located in canada? I want to get into it sooner than later. Im just sitting here waiting away life.Im so depressed, Im trying to find apprenticeship but they are not offering anything. Is the field hard, considering Im not great at schooling or math. I figured Im more of a hands on learner vs reading from books. I learned to drive a mini skid from hands on vs learning it in the classroom.
@@pb8303 My only advice here is either apply to companies.. if they are not responsive, another option is pre-apprenticeship program which will give you some hours & sometimes help you find work after! becoming-an-electrician.com/
7:46 I do this for work and they have us stack the wires..
Yeah code rules changes A LOT in the electrical world.. hard to keep up. Are you talking the new stacking staples? Or you have to use different size of staples depending wire size, or if you want to stack wires, you need an extra-depth electrical wire staple? becoming-an-electrician.com/
Which country you belong and Which origins codes
This video is showing Canadian Electrical Code. becoming-an-electrician.com/
Your hands are not as strong because you are getting older.
Im against the pretwisting now. the manufacturer doesnt recommend even
Any repetitive action your body performs everyday can cause repeated injury to tendons, muscles, and ligaments and eventually scar tissue it sucks
I don't agree with this. Strength gets built up over time, especially for these types of muscles in your hands that we don't use often for splicing wires. If you don't splice for awhile, you will slowly lose that strength. becoming-an-electrician.com/
I understand your concerns - and it's important to protect your body - but putting wires untwisted under a wire nut (marette), and using the wire nut to twist the wires for you, can often be a much less strong splice, and weaker contact points, which can be a point of failure / arcing / fires. becoming-an-electrician.com/
Yes definitely! Repetitive strain injury (RSI) is something you have be really careful of as an electrician. When tightening wire nuts, I often use both hands if the task can allow for us so it's not just the one hand twisting constantly. Good points! becoming-an-electrician.com/
Are you sure you didn't get the tall/short version on one of them and not notice that part by chance?
For the insulated I picked the same size as my non-insulated size. Typically they are sized in waist/length.. once I started using them I didn't realize the length was considerably longer than the non-insulated with same tagged dimensions. The video is just sharing to be careful and make sure the length fits you, as it caught me off guard. (Also due to the legs having a zipper, it felt like the pant leg was always dragging, or under my foot!) becoming-an-electrician.com/

Hi What is the income for a journeyman in Ontario ? Thanks
I cannot say.. each province electrician payrate for electricians is so different in Canada. Best option is to call and ask.. or inquire in your interview! becoming-an-electrician.com/
Where did you get those strong wires?
"Blue", colors dont mean anything in residential when youre working with mulitple gc's on different projects, just dont use white/grey/green for your Lines
This video is intended for commercial electricians working with 3-Phase panels, where there will be three different colors. Depending on region, colors may differ, but the concept of A, B, C should have been the takeaway. becoming-an-electrician.com/
Thanks for the video. In a single phase panel, for example in a condo suite, breaker one would be "A 1-2" and breaker two would be "B 3-4". Would you label the third breaker "C 5-6"? I asked this as "C 5-6" would typically be what you would label the third breaker in a three phase panel. So, what would I label the third breaker in a single phase panel? I hope this makes sense
Yes it makes sense. It would go A 5-6. So: A 1-2 B 3-4 A 5-6 A three phase panel has A-B-C. But the actual condo suites have a single phase panel, from a three phase panel. So they only have two hot conductors and a common (neutral) white wire. Because of this, that suite will actually have 208V between two hots, and 120V to Neutral. In a typical house, because of how the power comes from the transformer (I think called a High-Delta Leg), you get 240V between the two hots and 120V to Neutral. Each house creates their own neutral (ground plate / ground rod into the actual earth outside the home). Here's the Wikipedia article on High-Delta Leg: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-leg_delta You can stay updated with becoming-an-electrician.com by signing-up for the email list by getting my free apprentice electrician book: becoming-an-electrician.com/optin/5-tips-apprentice-electrician-book/
@BecomingAnElectrician thank you very much
You're welcome! Good question! Please feel free to leave comments on becoming-an-electrician.com any time! 🙂
Thank you for this video, It helps me a lot to understand the system. I don’t have any experience or education, but somehow I have been working as an electrician since September. Yesterday I called Ace trade school to register for Level 1 apprentice, and they told me I need to work 1600 hours under a skilled trade in BC before I can take the class. Do I need to work 1600 hours first to take the Level 1 class? you said you worked 9 months before level 1 class, now I am little bit confused.
I don't think that is true. I don't think you need the hours before you do the school. The conditions to pass that level & get your pay raise is to have BOTH the hours for the level & pass the schooling level.👍 Reach out to your local electrical college about your area's specific requirements.. as each region can be a little different! What is true is that you do need to be registered as an apprentice electrician! Then your company submits your hours on your behalf. There should be a website you log into to see your progress!

I also saw one picture that included it's own box you'd install in rough-in? What kind of electrical box did you purchase already? And what kind of situation are you in? becoming-an-electrician.com/
Generally, "marette" is a canadian term
Marrette is the name of the product, just like how "Kleenex" is often used instead of tissue. The actual term is "wire nut" or "wire connector" ! becoming-an-electrician.com/
My dad connect wires
🙂
Why cant I find a video to wire nut 4 12ga solid wires? 14ga is easy.
I can create a video on this once I get back to updating the website. The answer is just strip the 12 AWG solid wires longer before you try splicing them! If you are just a DIY, your hand strength is not that of an electrician who splices wires often each day, so stripping the wires longer than normal will help when splicing larger sized conductors together 👍 becoming-an-electrician.com/
great video, thanks for all the information
Hi! Viewer from Europe here! How do we choose the right boxes for concrete walls? I mistakenly bought a dry lining box and came to understand its the wrong one. Thanks!
Hey! If you are an electrician, your code book should have a section in the back tables sharing that kind of boxes are allowed. If it doesn't show there, then if you go onto the electrical box company's website, they will have a section for different types of boxes. If you are unsure, look at the SPECIFICATION SHEET, which will tell you what the equipment is usable for. If you're just a do-it-yourself, then ask your local hardware store about the task you're trying to accomplish.. they should guide you through what hardware & equipment you'll need! becoming-an-electrician.com/
We always strip 2 wire nmd by inserting blade in the center, slightly angling the blade towards the ground as you run it down the wire. I totally understand why someone would not approve lol but that's how the majority do it.
That's how some do it, but there's high-risk of stripping the conductor accidentally. You can also gouge the bond wire accidentally, too. Over the years, the way I've shown will allow your conductors to be unharmed from beginning to end. There is no right or wrong, but when you experience a mistake in a situation that is hard to fix, you will realize it's not worth the high-risk. becoming-an-electrician.com/how-to-strip-nmd90-wire-jacket/

@@Anonsbdofjrnwodb Oh okay thanks for clarifying! There is a code rule I think on this, but I don't know the exact number. As you start to become an electrician, just remember it's all about protecting the wire.. so if it feels too close to the edge of the stud, then I'd suggest putting a metal protection plate there. Another thing to think about is how long are typical screws going into the stud? I think drywallers use 1 1/4" on their first sheet, then longer screws on double-drywalled walls (such as party walls or ceilings where a dwelling is above). What size is the Milwaukee bag? How many inches?
It's about 21" L x 15" W. You can view a direct link on the website to a similar heavy-duty construction bag for electricians: becoming-an-electrician.com/the-best-hand-tools-bag-for-electricians/ I liked having one hand-tool bag for hand tools, and one electrical tool bag for power tools.
@@BecomingAnElectrician I was just trying to find that exact bag, on Amazon they either sell a 17 inch or a 22 inch
@@coleshelton8618 Okay, I'd go for the 22 inch. You can neatly put away your Drill, Impact, Batteries, and Hackzall as you go along if you start bending EMT Pipe! 👍 Don't miss my FREE Apprentice Electrician Book!: becoming-an-electrician.com/free
Great information
Thank-you! Hope you learned how to drill holes for electrical wires!: becoming-an-electrician.com/
Can you do a video on boots that you wear? Would be good to see the overalls being worn over top of some rubber boots too, as that's how I would wear mine. The overalls should fit over some rubber boots no problem right? Would be good to see that in the next video.
Never tried rubber boots with them, just typical construction books with 6" vertical to cover ankle. becoming-an-electrician.com/
I’m a biomedical engineer,why do I need to know about that?!😩
These are the basics of electrical theory. becoming-an-electrician.com/what-is-an-electrical-load/
In my class the teacher has given us very few known values to get clues from. Only one known resistor value is pretty common on the diagrams we're given. Alot of what I see on youtube and google they have alot of resistor values to work with already. So my question is how can you break things down with almost no know values including only one, maybe two known resistor values?
Typically you have to know at least two values to begin an equation. That would also be like in real life. If you put a electrical meter on equipment, it would show you Voltage, and your meter may also be able to show you amps, too. If it's a purely resistive load, like a baseboard heater, on the box or specification sheet, it will show you the resistance, so you would be able to figure out your voltage (120V in a typical home), with the resistance to get your amps, then your watts. becoming-an-electrician.com/
Service : no New Construction: yes
Service can definitely put you into dirty or sketchy situations, but there can be a lot of learning there, too! becoming-an-electrician.com/
Thanks for the video! But my question is how warm do they help keep your feet?? I know you said they’re great at keeping your feet dry, but you didn’t speak any on the extra warmth if they did help any with that?? Thanks
Yeah they are essentially like an extra sock over your foot for extra warmth & insulation from the outside elements. The bonus is that they are absorbent to keep your actual foot less wet, so break times when you sit your feet can often get cold because of dampness and not moving! When your feet are less wet, it is easier to get back up and going to a better warmth. Further, they were quite comfy over time as it protects your feet from rigid boots 👍 becoming-an-electrician.com/
I bought them they’re awesome
Please learn All the proper names and terms for all of these products before you try to teach others what they are. Lol.
What names are you referring to?
Grear video. Got a couple of question. What do use to straighten prongs on a plug? I used pliers and squeezed them straight, instead grabbing and bending eith pliers. Now the prongs have light grooves frok the teeth on the pliers. Is that a problem?
A lot of times you'd use your plug tester gently to swivel the plug straight it if was twisted! becoming-an-electrician.com/
Plug tester. Maybe something i should get. Thanks! I'm not an electrician. Just someone with lots curiosity.
@@Specter1031 Yes, not only will it tell you if proper connections, but a lot of electricians use the plug tester to swivel the plug back straight GENTLY 👍 becoming-an-electrician.com/

I would recommend not skipping forward, as I explain important step-by-step how to splice wires, and how to prevent damaged wire splices by not scoring the wire with wire strippers. I wanna start a career at this but can u tell me if electricians need to do heavy lifting or not ?
Yes, it is construction work. You will need to carry your tools, ladders, materials etc. Many times if something is very heavy you will get helper or heavy machinery to lift such heavy object to certain floors, etc. It keeps you in shape 🙂 becoming-an-electrician.com/

Great videos, i was looking for help, im doing electrical in an old trailer that has 2x2 wood framing, ive got dimmers and usb outlets to install and theres not much room for them , any ideas or tricks?, the boxes i have are shallow 1 1/2 and the walls well be covered with 1/2 cedar , so 2 inches max, the electrical outlets with the usbs are about 2" and same for my dimmer switch
I'm not sure of an answer... my guess is you will have to try and find slim switches, or built out the wall 👎
Can you give tips on how to find an employer/ sponsor for a highschool student I just started grade 12 and I would like to be an apprentice after I am done with highschool
I'd say first see if your school has a program to get you started doing your apprenticeship during school. That will save you a year, and get you ahead faster. If they don't offer that, maybe look for a high school that does. If not, then I would say in your last couple months of high school you can start reaching out to electrical employers with a resume telling them you're eager to start learning the trade! becoming-an-electrician.com/
If you filed a flat on the shank of the green screwdriver, it wouldn't rotate. Otherwise use it on a square shank driver.
Nice tips! The dedicated reamer was always a more robust solution. The screw-on reamer also made your regular screwdriver heavier, and reduced its reach, such as if you're working in a panel! becoming-an-electrician.com/
