    Cool timecapsule. I remember seeing this show on the Tube at 4 Wheel Parts waiting room while getting new tires. Manson's place has since burned down and 4 wheeling the canyon is still outlawed. I was lucky to be one of the last folks to see it a month before it was gone.

    Myself and a couple of friends were camping at the base of surprise canyon in November of 2000 when CORVA was going to winch up the falls the last time before BLM gated the road up to the falls. Truely a site to see. There were a lot of pics being taken , and my son and I ended up on the cover of 4 wheeler mag. Haven’t been back to surprise canyon since. Made a lot of trips to pleasant canyon, goler wash, South Park and through mingle pass to the geological cabin by striped butte. People really need to get involved and get surprise canyon opened back up. The whole area up there is riddled with history that needs to be made available to the public of that era of time in the history of the area and our country.

      I never ran the top waterfalls unfortunately but we did the bottom falls (0 thru 4) every year with the panamint valley cal 4 wheel events up until they closed the last waterfalls. Would have been a kick to do the top.

    Looking back now with all the side by sides would have tore the crap out of that trail if it hadn't been closed plus they get up there and eventually vandalize the crap out of the place. Side by sides worst thing for the deserts and ghost towns. I don't know why but the mentality of those people who own those the drive them like idiots, and couldn't careless about history of the desert.

    Fortunate to explore Panamint City via dirt bike in the early 70s. Yep have pictures and for several years went back up to chat with Jim, member of the Charles Manson cult/clan. Aside from Jim's garden, enjoyed his tub, tipped over water towers which gave a birds eye view of the valley below. Ed and I had great memories of the area. Ed passed away and I'm pushing 78. So many stories.......

      I think the next big run on the price of silver will lead to another round of pressure to reopen the canyon and start the mines back up.

    • @JaredVonBaren
      @JaredVonBaren 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zxtuner4lyfe Yeah, they can. And have before, when people planned to do similar things back in the mid-90s and the early 2000s. Literally there’s nothing up there but dead dreams, a few piles of dead folks bones, and a little water. Outside of that, the mines were basically tapped out. They’ve said other areas closer to China Lake are actually more suited to forming gold, silver and copper due to the ongoing volcanism in the area, but as far as Panamint City goes, it is and will remain a ghost town forever more. The government has control of 99.999% of the land surrounding it, and it’s all protected lands. Plus all the NIMBY Californians don’t like people “ruining the ecology” of anything that they haven’t been able to ruin first, and they weren’t able to totally decimate this area with capitalism, so, it still has a few private owners who won’t release some of their land holds, but they literally can’t do much of anything with the property. There isn’t electrical service, no roads anymore, and there is very little in the way of human contact for several months at a time in some instances...which is also not ideal for opening up much of anything, especially trying to find people to fill up a town, or reboot an old mine...which is already super hazardous work.
