I think part of the reason AOD is looked fondly upon now is because Underworld - Shadow of the tomb raider followed it. Legend and Anniversary were great, but Underworld was buggy af and didn't really cap off that timeline all to well. and fuck the reboots, those aren't tomb raider games

I loved it when it first came out but literally because I was blinded by the fact it was Lara Croft. Story is dece tho. After I played it later on I hated how clunky it was and glitchy, and you can't even do flips and shoot, which essentially makes the flipping useless. Sometimes her running animation would speed up almost like she was suppose to be moving at that speed but then she'd go back to slow mo running. Lol Cant wait for the remaster. Hope they do it justice.

I understand why AoD flopped (chaotic development) and isn't the most beloved episode in the franchise (no longer the spirit of a Tomb Raider game), but I'll always respect the ambition behind it. They tried something new, expanded the writing of Lara's character (started wih IV), a more present storyline and characters to support it, new ways to explore (Paris' level in a nutshell). I like to parallel AoD with the Tomb Raider Survivor Trilogy, because the first one wasn't as lucky as the second one, and yet they have some similarities. They drastically changed the tone of the series, tried something different, got their inspiration from the BIG games of their respective eras: MGS, Shenmue... for AoD and Uncharted/The Last of Us for Survivor. But funnily enough both Laras are completely opposite to each other, one is peak while the other is utterly wasted potential.

I've always maintained this game is a diamond in the rough, it seems silly to ask Capcom to remake a remake but maybe some kind of directors cut remix would be good

May I make a little observation? (in light of recent news) I noticed how many times you talked about your love for Lara's look and general aesthetic (big agree btw) This is obviously very common among people who are fond of for AoD. I remember myself having huge excitement and high hopes for this game, watching trailers over and over. But I wonder if a lot of AoD fans find it hard to take a step back and truly look past their obsession with the aesthetic/tone and the many, deep, fundamental problems they've trained themselves to look past that go far beyond technical issues. I guess what i'm trying to say is that, no matter what Aspyr manage do with this game, it's still going to get absolutely crucified by reviewers. And I think AoD fans need to brace themselves for that because I fear they are going to take it very, VERY personally. 😓

It's such a shame AOD was released in such a messy state. I absolutely loved the story and I wanted to bad to see a proper conclusion through the last two games of the planned trilogy. However that was not to be. I was quite annoyed or frustrated with all the glitchy bugs in the game and I despised the fact that Lara no longer weilds two guns at one time. I loved Kurtis Trent and I would have loved to see him in his own game. I was really quite disappointed with AOD when I first played at at 12years old. It really was a huge step back from the progress made in Last Rev on PS1. I found traversal hard because using the analogue sticks was difficult with her same PS1 type of movement and because if you didn't shove the left analogue stick forward fast enough, Lara would walk into a run instead of instantly running. I have always been such a big fan of TR and Lara Croft, and AOD just sort of put a downer on my favourite hobby and interest in my life at the time. I would really love for someone in gaming development to remaster or remake this game and even pursuit the rest of the story so we can finally see a true conclusion to the awesome story.

I agree with you totally. I love this game. I don't understand how people hate on this game for being story driven, but then the same people complain about the first Dragon's Dogma for having no story.

I enjoyed this. I downloaded Destiny One today and think I'll give it a go for as bit. Destiny 2 is getting a little stale these days. I'm already tired of doing the Encore mission over and over. All my gear is at 2000, and there's not much to look for at the moment. Thx for video.

I’ve only played the Survivor Trilogy but I plan to get all the previous games in the series. Something about this game just sticks out to me, I love its darker/edgy vibe and its environments have an amazing atmosphere. Would it be worth playing the vanilla version first or should I just play with the Mod from the get go?

I completely agree, to me this game also ended up being my favourite storyline... I'm so sad it didn't make it...

Super Bunnyhop coined this term, "the virgin effect", over a decade ago, describing the way people get imprinted to their first game in a franchise. Said phenomena is the only way any young zoom zoom could ever "like" any of the modern RE-Engine clusterfuck demakes. They all completely butcher everything that made RE2-4 so legendary. Yes, people are too harsh on the RE3:RE, but not in the often stated manner. RE2RE did all the same sins (tons of content cuts, handholding, butchered characters, worse OST/art/gameplay...), but the PS5 audience does not care, because they've never played a RE game before, and they "need" all of their games to play like the generic post-TLOU era 3rd person shooters.

Finally some RE3 R love! I recently completed it on steam and I have loved every second of it. Im glad someone out there agrees with me on it.

I believe we can all agree that everything you've listed was done exquisitely - the audio, visual elements, the dialogues, the characterization. Sadly, all that could not compensate for the thing we were actually there for, which is a satisfying storyline, along with the content that was not only expanded upon, but ended up non-existing to being with. They did not only cut at least 40% of the content, but also made some aspect of the story pivot for the worse - aka the nemesis transformation into a xenomoprhic amphibian right around the half of the game, not making the escape through the city last half as long as it did in the original, everything was just somehow piled together and it made no sense whatsoever.

This is the first Tomb Raider game I played, and my favorite one. I remember It taked me years to complete when I was a kid but that even with the frustration made it more special, couse I spent tons of hours in those levels, really inmersive experience. Im playing it now with the definitive edition demo and this is GOLD.

It’s not just the amount of hate it gets because of cut content, it’s the lies that make the game sound bad. People complain about Jill’s new face model when they changed Claire and Leon’s face models in RE2 remake, they complain about this version of Jill whether it’s her outfit or her personality. I never really liked her outfit in the original game since it felt so unnecessary for her to wear, in the remake she doesn’t wear anything that looks like it came straight from the tomb raider game. She wears a blue tank top with some black jeans, something an ordinary civilian would where while they stay at home. The outfit in the remake is a lot more realistic, it looks similar to Claire’s outfit in RE2 remake which is funny but like said before, it’s a lot more realistic and it gives "surviving apocalypse" vibes. Her personality is a lot better than the original as well, OG lacked personality but I’m not gonna get judgy since the original was made in the 1990s. Jill got huge character development in the remake, the betrayal she went through in the events of RE1 caused her to have trust issues which is why she’s skeptical of Carlos and the rest of the UBCS team early in the remake. We also get a deep dive into her PTSD, we get to see nightmares of how the mansion really affected her and we get to read files and notes written by Jill that explain that she hasn’t been sleeping very well and eating very well along with more information about her PTSD. People also complain about her cursing in the remake (she never cursed in the original) but she curses for four minutes straight in a six to seven hour video game (average playtime) plus Carlos, Chris, and Leon curse as well so I don’t see why everyone is making such a problem about this, it seems sexist and feminist. My point is, Jill got amazing character development whether people like it or not. The remake pretty much does everything better than the original EXCEPT content, that’s literally it. This game was extremely close to becoming better than the original game but the only thing that’s stopping it is its lack of content. But hey, either way it deserves more love, plus RE2 remake did the same thing RE3 remake did, they both cut content. So the question is… why are we praising Resident Evil 2 remake for doing the same thing Resident Evil 3 remake did? Overall, the game is great. Could have been better as a remake but the character development, voice acting, soundtrack, graphics, and action are great.

This one is the Gem 💎 of Tomb Raider games! So underrated and I wish to play it again! I just can’t find it anywhere! Honestly I think it deserves much love and attention from the creators! It’s worth a remaster or a remake! It will be a hit!
