Glenn Gould in studio: from Musicanada
In 1975 the National Film Board released a documentary called Musicanada, and of course there is a section on Glenn Gould. The NFB had also produced an earlier Gould documentary- Glenn Gould: On & Off the Record (1959).
This clip appears a bit later in the film, sandwiched between other Canadian musicians, and given Glenn's outlook on applause and live performances, I couldn't resist leaving the applause that leads into the next section.

Glenn Gould reads from The Three Cornered World.
มุมมอง 520ปีที่แล้ว
In 1967 Gould was introduced to this book written by Natsume Soseki. On a train ride home from Newfoundland, Gould met a professor in the club car, struck up a conversation and gifted his new friend with a recording of the recently released Emperor concerto (I love that he traveled with extra records). This fan, in return, sent Gould a copy of The Three Cornered World. He adored this book, owne...

This video is from 2018, when Bruno received a lifetime achievement award. Here, he speaks of working with many greats- he starts to talk about Gould at about 1:35. I am eternally grateful for Bruno's films!
Glenn Gould statue and Chickering (1999)
มุมมอง 302ปีที่แล้ว
1999- the unveiling of the statue that is in front of the CBC/Glenn Gould studio in Toronto. It is lovely to see it back when it was shiny and new. There is also wonderful talk with Ruth Abernathy, who sculpted this marvelous statue. Yet the highlight for me- a performance on Gould's beloved Chickering.
Cornelia Foss on Glenn Gould myths.

Another extra from Genius Within. Here, Cornelia Foss dispels some myths about Glenn Gould. I could listen to her talk about him- all day long. This is wonderful.

We all loved Leopold his long hair when no one had long hair. Jazz musicians loved him. He cast this joy and energy. Why Disney chose him for his movie Fantasia. He new everyone. He was magical
Лучше нет и не будет. 😢❤ Светлая память гению❤, ты подарил нам счастье❤
New gould video? i'll buy that absolutely
Composer? Thx. Sounds like some renaissance music.
The composer is Sweelinck.
Sviatislav Richter!! playing Schubert at 3:29.... beautiful....
I really appreciate the inclusion of Glenn's own annotated copy of 3CW. The first object I would have stolen from the Archives.❤ (just kidding!) 😁
Oh, THAT has already been stolen! It disappeared after the 1986 GG exhibit in Paris...I think this is just a copy he made to read from for the show.
@@hurricane_hazel oh😞. I thought it had been recovered. I'll still steal this one😂
Wonderfully unusual repertoire.
Whats the name of the first piece?
It's the Gigue from the French Overture (BWV 831).
@@hurricane_hazel thank you, thought it was something from english suites but couldnt find it :)
There's Ray in the background there.
旋回しながら演奏するのはおそらく彼だけ、素晴らしい音楽性、大好きです。
I have been a Gould fan for 30 years, but I have never seen this footage. It almost looks like it's in high def. Thanks for posting. BTW, I'm intrigued by your nom de plum. Hmmm... I'm guessing your 'real name' is Hazel and you are also from the American South? I guess I'll never know. (Hurricane Hazel decimated my husband's family in North Carolina, by the way. But, I won't hold that against you.) :)
It's a Gould reference actually. Hurricane Hazel hit Toronto when he was going to perform a concert- I think maybe 6 people showed.
@@hurricane_hazel Ah, yes, of course. I see that Hazel was still a powerful Category 1 by the time it reached Toronto. I suppose Gould wasn't too famous the year before the Goldbergs came out, but 11 inches of rain would deter anyone. Also, I want to thank you for your GG videos. I'm making my way through some more of them now. Thanks again.
@@westernkentucky5956 Be sure to check out Bruce Cross' channel. He has amazing Gould treasures!
@@hurricane_hazel Thanks! Will do with pleasure.
grazie di nuovo
When I listen to Glenn's Bach, I hear God. When I listen to other pianists' Bach, I hear the piano.
TH-cam gem....
One of the best pianists ever to come out of Canada, indeed, and ever will
Thank you! Not only rare, but it looks great!
Thank you!!! Your TH-cam channel is precious!
Unbelievable! I thought I had seen everything there was to see! You're a miracle, Hazel!💛💛
I absolutely love Glenn's singing! Without his singing, the entire piano piece would be incomplete.
Good find.
Thank. You.
The piece of music at the beginning of Gould's broadcast is from a record called 'Japanese National Music Series - festival music'. A Crown LP (SW5016) side B, band 2 - Matsuri Bayashi suite, arranged by T Wakayama "bamboo flute solo with accompaniment of chime" Hope this helps anyone trying to identify it.
God bless this man for showing us Gould in so many ways.
🥂
No shaking hands but fist bumps are allowed lol
Monuments, monuments, monuments.
💙💙💙
This is ...marvelous. Somehow both soothing and stimulating at the same time. His tone is just perfect for the reading. AND it's so hard to separate Soseki's words from the person of Gould. I think Gould really found his center in this work. So lovely.
Remarkable video. Thank you for sharing
Can anybody translate in french ? Thanks
Sound cuts in and out
As I stated, there are copyright restrictions and those parts had to be muted.
@@hurricane_hazelOh ! Thank you. But GG is an Angel and above all these attributes;-)
Bless you Hazel, I needed this tonight🥲
1:36. Solid back and white seat. I'm sure I've seen this rogue chair in some earlier photos of Gould.
Your channel is like the African continent FULL OF DIAMONDS. I will steal other people's phones to add subscribers to this channel
Truly one of the hidden gems of TH-cam!
I think Stephen Ham's playing is quite inspired. Lovely and fitting.
Gould was no longer with us when the statue was created, yet I find it quite moving... and it was a pleasure to "meet" in person. I love the choice of the bench instead of at a piano, it recognizes, somehow, the solitary, yet inviting, aspect of Gould and his art.
I love how when the reporter sits down next to the statue, she appears to have the same overwhelming feels we did when we "met" him. Very sweet.
I have so many thoughts.....but I'm stuck on.... the Chickering was TUNED!!! More to follow..🤣
And no keys were sticking. 🤣
So perceptive, Cornelia. No wonder Glenn loved her.
💙💙💙
So much has been said about Gould, I don't think you can begin to boil it down to one phrase. But for me he does what music should do, infuse our lives with wonder.
Glenn, you are the cutest pianist of all pianists, and the cutest person in all the world!
Glenn looks so sexy and cute here.
My husband was a professional musician and one occasion a well-meaning enthusiastic man squeezed his hand too hard. Michael reacted, but it was too late. No real harm was done, but it is valid to take care of your hands as a professional performance musician.
Gould was an artist whose magical fingers became the music!
I don't know If Glenn Gould met Jeremy Brett when Jeremy performed Shakespere at the Ontario Stratford Festival in the 1950s or early 1960s.Glenn and Brit, Jeremy of Sherlock Holmes fame, were only one tear apart in age.
Why should every aspect of anyone's private life be known, anyway?
Thank you and thank you again, Cornelia Foss, for these words about Glenn Gould. They are needed among so many legends and press and myths. Even the most brilliant people need love and friendship, probably more than the rest of us.
My two favorites.
Amazing bit of conversation.
