is there on YT a construction film ?
Hi I think there is somewhere, I don't have the link. It was built in 1997 in Fremantle, Perth. Now based in Sydney, Thanks for watching, cheers Paul
You would have to be an absolutely brave individual to sail for months on the ocean in Such a tiny little boat
Well they did and this Duyfken has sailed all the way back to Amsterdam in 2000 and has also circumnavigated Australia... thanks for following, and leaving a comment , cheers Paul
Illegal aliens!
Another great video Paul, and that steam whistle I heard at the end sounded like my old friend "Waratah"
it was, cheers Paul
That is so cool! Thanks for sharing Paul. Cheers! ⛵⛵⛵
Glad you enjoyed it James , cheers Paul
Well unfortunately you won't be able to sail her for a while after the container ship crushing her in habour
That was the Leeuwin based in Fremantlw WA and yes it was devastating news. That's half the youth sailing training options in Australia gone in an instant. It's not clear if it's worth spending $Aus10 million to re -rig her when the hull would have sustained some stress damage when coming down and as a steel ship the hull plates probably only have 10-15 years life left in them. A very sad day. Thanks for watching Sailing Duyfken and I hope you enjoy the other videos, cheers Paul
Why don't you use a 18th century technique against marine growth namely copper plating the hull often done with 18th century Dutch VOC ships not contemporary accurate but cheaper than doing this time after time the copper plates were one or two millimetres thick and fastened with copper nails on to the wood
The answer is I don't really know. The ship was built in Fremantle in 1999 the shipwrights made that decision then...could be the copper was too expensive and they had volunteers to do the anti fouling. But yes copper plate was used a lot. Can I suggest a brilliant animated video on how 16th century tall ships were built and sailed by a very clever man at 'Animagraffs' on you tube, you would love it, cheers Paul
We used 60 litres of anti foul for two complete coats and gave the props some new prop speed all up I think we spent 7 or 8 days giving her a scrub , priming , two coats of anti foul, New anodes and a lick of prop speed on the two props, she was relaunched on the high tide Friday morning, she was a real pleasure to work on and I look forward to seeing her at noakes marine yard again in the future
Thanks Jade, I couldn't make Friday, but thanks to you and the team for great job, I hope to see you over the water soon, cheers Paul
@@sailingduyfken5948 I have my interview to volunteer at the museum this Saturday
@@jadegale4963 great is that with Mirjam or Andrew? I'm away sailing on my boat this weekend. The first video ( haul out) has gone a little bit viral 24K views in 7 days which for sailing Duyfken is huge. See you at the museum, cheers Paul
Very interesting. Terrific production keep up the good work.
Thanks Rueben, cheers Paul
Tell me how much it costs to re-do the ship like that.
To be honest I hate to think but a lot ....tens of thousands, cheers Paul
Looks like fun. Did they hand you a brush? 😁
Unfortunately for insurance purposes only their staff are allowed to do the work but I chip in back at the museum, cheers Paul
Seeing this video reminds me of the time I’ve spent looking around the Grand Turk, when she was berthed in Whitby as her home port. I know she was built some time in the 90’s for filming Hornblower etc., but it was very interesting, especially when the ship’s Master showed me how they managed maintenance while on location. A fully equipped workshop was hidden behind a roll-out bulkhead in the bow! Happy Days.
Hi, well we don't have enough room for a workshop so below decks is often a mess. But the Endeavour replica also has a hidden workshop up forward, Im think their bosun sleeps there as well. Thanks for watching and checkout the other videos on the playlist. We are trying to grow interest in the channel. Cheers Paul
Didn't they say its a pure sailing vessel, so what with the props
Yes It's sailing replica, but by marine law if you having paying passengers you must have auxillary power and lets' face it oars won't cut it. Thanks for watching, cheers Paul
In the day, auxiliary power would have been a ship’s boat or two with the strongest men on board, rowing their hearts out, or hauling kedge anchors. Not a lot of horsepower, and not economical, these days.
It’s like a dream come true for the lucky passengers.
yep, visiting tall ships don't happen that often in Sydney. Thanks for watching, cheers Paul
I seen it in the swan river just after it was built and we had a tour and I got some pictures
Great yes she's a lovely ship. So sad to hear about the Leeuwin though. Our normal skipper is over there at the moment and a couple of our crew have sailed on her. Thanks for watching, cheers Paul
Don't forget that Australia was called New Holland before it got that name
And new York was New Amsterdam....the Dutch were everywhere. Thanks for watching, cheers Paul
What beautiful ships in a beautiful harbour on a beautiful day!
Thanks Jim yes it was a great day, cheers Paul
Great! Hoped for a west coast of the States, will look into her port of calls.
Well I think she's going to the Caribbean and Miami so probably East coast, cheers Paul
Duyfken sounds Dutch. Is there a connection with the Netherlands with this Beauty ?
Yep she was the 1st ship to bring Europeans to Australia in 1606, lamding at Weipa, 164 years before capt Cook and the British. She was part of the VOC trading spices in the Dutch East Indies....Indonesia. Thanks for watching, cheers Paul
Looks like I'll have to make a trip to the East Coast to welcome her next time she visits the US
Yep check out their website for dates, thanks for watching, cheers Paul
I used to crew on Dyfken years ago in Fremantle. Still have my crew shirt somewhere. I was ‘poached’ over to STS Leeuwin and had earlier crewed on the Batavia Replica. Great memories
Well if you are still sailing on the Leeuwin say hello to Callam and Richard, cheers Paul
When you consider it came from Europe so long ago it's tiny.
Yes very small, original crew about 25 and they all slept on deck for 8 months back to Amsterdam, in all weather. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment, cheers Paul
They don’t make Humans like they used to, at least not as much. Cheers From California 😎
Fascinating Paul - looks like the in-water cleans with the robot was doing its job. Have seen hulls much worse after only a couple of months! Also what date did you record this - I thought the South Steyne in the background was destroyed by fire recently?
Last week going back there today to hopefully get some scraping. The fire was on a barge near the Steyne, I also saw it on the news, cheers Paul
Oh ok - must have been some fake news! Looks like only small barnacles which a robot doesn't usually remove. Unique footage of the Duyfken 👍 at 110 ton it's no wonder the winch broke. (They don't make them like that anymore😅)
Great to meet you today paul on the slipway, looking forward to joining you as a Volunteer in the near future

Never like those high sterns
Did you know, "given a stern talking too" comes from troublesome sailors who were summoned to the stern deck where the officers stood to be dressed down? cheers Paul
The Sprits'l is a lot of fun, hey?
yep thanks again for watching Bob, cheers Paul
In the early days we just had a nylon belt with a lanyard and snap clip.
aah times have changed it's all about insurance risk now.

Yep
To be continued I am hoping
only if they let me scrape, cheers Paul
Sounds like badly tuned bagpipes. Thanks for the video
or my concertina playing, thanks for watching , cheers Paul
Pretty cool. How did they get her from WA to NSW?
On the back of a transport ship cost an absolute fortune, they couldn't get a crew to sail her across the bight. Which is weird as she sailed all the way back to Amsterdam in 2002 and also around Australia. Thanks for watching, cheers Paul
@@sailingduyfken5948 There was some crew in WA who were able/willing to get her over to NSW, however not a full crew. The rest would have had to come over from the east. At the time however the WA (covid) hard border was in place, so we just couldn't get enough people to crew the ship, hence why it had to be freighted much to the disappointment of the WA crew.
She was definitely crying because she didn't want to come out of the water! Thanks for sharing, Paul! That's a beautiful boat! Cheers!
Thanks again for watching James and leaving a comment, cheers Paul
Messy business. The traditional lines have an unbeatable aesthetic, but watching this gives me more appreciation for my modern cordage too 😅
Yes I understand how modern technology has improved cordage but there is something special about natural fibre rope even though it doesn't last very long. Thanks for watching, cheers Paul
@@sailingduyfken5948 very true and agreed. Glad there are folks like you and the crew of the Duyfken who put in the effort to maintain its authenticity!
@@liwoszarchaeologist Thanks

I was a shipkeeper in Freo when she was launched and sailed as engineer for several trips on the west coast.
Thanks Bob, you will be happy to know she is still going strong and gets a lot of loving attention. Very popular with the public and sails every Friday and Saturday on the harbour in Summer. I'll say hello to Andrew the Botswain for you, cheers Paul
Does maintenance ever actually stop on a ship like this?!
No not really...thanks for watching, cheers Paul
I climbed those masts onboard her when I was onboard I was also her helmsman and deckhand/rigger
Over in Perth, good on you...she's still going strong in Sydney, thanks for watching, cheers Paul
@@sailingduyfken5948 yup I joined her 2 weeks after she returned to Australia
I was the foretopman on the three masted bark "Elizabeth II" from 1984-89. I also sailed on the "Dove" and did a day sail on "Bounty" in 1991. No harnesses back then. Laying over the yard with all that gear, trying to furl canvas looks like it would be very uncomfortable. We lived by "One hand for yourself, one hand for the ship". Not sure I would want the false sense of security of the harness. I understand the Safety thing but when it's just your hands and your shipmates, awareness runs very high. We never had an accident and only once did I have to talk a volunteer out of the rigging (she was in no real danger, would have fallen 8 feet into water, she was on the bowsprit). Duyfken looks like a wonderful vessel. Enjoy the experience.
Thanks Paul for sharing that story, cheers Paul
"How to Climb on a Tall Ship"? Have someone do it for you.........
Ha ha yes there is a case for that though some really enjoy it, thanks for watching, cheers Paul
My great grandfather was a tops man on a real square-rigged windjammer as a teen into his late twenties. He eventually settled in Alaska as a gold prospector. Going on to use the gold he found to set up a commercial boat building compony, then making his own boat and going into Commercial Fishing with his sons. I recall herring some stories from him about that life before all the new "Safety" procedures. Sounds like a lot is lost to bureaucratic red tape. Going up bare footed so you could grip the ropes better and read the hum of the ship. Learning to instinctively know by feel what the ship needed or how to trim her literally by how she spoke to you through touch and through your feet (Same as feeling the ship in your hands when we use to have to steer manually). As a boy I remember how it was "Standing wheel watch" compared to how it is now. Way easer and weigh less intuitive. We are losing the art of navigation and ship handling.
Wow another great story, thanks for sharing and watching, cheers Paul
Now imagine you are in the Royal Navy in 1805 and have to climb up to shorten sail during a gale.
The first time I went on the Alma Doepel, l was told to put on a belt harness then go up the mast. Oh by the way no one was the ship, no one showed me anything. And we also had who could climb the mast faster. But not now.
