Making beautiful pens from SS Great Britain deck planks
Thanks for viewing. Today we are using some pen kits to make a couple of lovely little pens. Once again we are using the reclaimed deck planks from the SS Great Britain. This is actually the first time I've ever made pens and I am very happy with the result :-)
The SS Great Britain was launched in 1843 and was the first ocean going ship to be iron built, with a steam engine and a propeller.
She is currently being refurbished in Bristol, so I was fortunate to get my hands on some of her old deck planks from the timber recycling place I use in Bristol.
Please note: This video is for entertainment purposes. I am a total novice when it comes to woodturning, so please don't rely on this as a guide or follow any of the techniques I am using here - I do wear all the safety equipment and try to follow all the safety instructions provided with the equipment I use.

Twice turned driftwood bowl with resin and beach pebbles
มุมมอง 6014 วันที่ผ่านมา
Thanks for viewing. This is a quick video this week as I've been away from home. This little bowl was initially turned from a piece of driftwood last year. I wanted to finish it and add a bit more interest, so have included some small beach pebbles in resin. The wood has a few marks, which is common for driftwood, but it's still nice :-) Please note: This video is for entertainment purposes. I ...

Large Driftwood Bowl - was a challenge to turn, but the result is lovely.

That is stunning Gareth! What is that lovely red wood? I sing Christmas carols at SS Great Britain every year with my choir!

Hi Bing. Thanks for the comments. The wood is called Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata), from Australia. When the ship came back to Bristol in 1970 it didn't have a deck, so this timber went on it in the 90s. I don't remember it (being only 4) but my grandparents took me down to the harbour to see it's return in 1970 😊

Thanks Bing (very Bristolian comment 😊). Yes, it's beautiful and I didn't want to see those columns go to waste. My missus suggested candle sticks 👍

Thanks Mel. When the resin started to heat up and bubble whilst it was curing, I thought it was going to go pear shaped, but I was lucky 😊
