I track time which I devote to learn languages (passively and actively) and it's interesting to see every month how much time was used for every language. Recently, I've also started to note down in the calendar what exact active learning activity I do for every language and it turned that in reality I don't do that much... Passive learning wins 😅 Thanks for your motivating videos! :)

Good luck for your language goals, hope you will achieve everything ! For me this year my main focus will be on Slovak (for context, I'm French but studying veterinary medicine in Slovakia in an English cursus but I wanna move to the Slovak cursus in a year and a half), I wanna reach a strong B2 level with a good knowledge in medicine/animals vocabulary. I wanna improve my speaking skills in Portuguese because even though I understand quite well it's hard for me to speak in Portuguese and not in Italian or Spanish lmao. I also wanna focus on Chinese for which I will have the same goals as for Slovak, and if I have the time I wanna continue studying Japanese and German, I know a bit of each bc I studied them a bit but dropped them for lack of time.

This was the most…suspenseful(?) polyglot goals/targets/etc video I have ever seen…like all was chill then suddenly 💥 German 💥 Uyghur 💥 Wolof..then you end it with “maybe Irish” 😭 definitely sounds like a lot of mystery…as for me, this is a year I don’t plan to add any languages, just improve my current ones but with a large focus of Afghan Persian/Dari since that’s the baby of the family. My Punjabi and Urdu will probably continue to be the second runners up…then Turkish and Serbo-Croatian since these are my best languages.

WOW Laura your channel has grown a lot since we first started from zero around a year and a half ago ! Look at you you're now at 3k, you definitely went thru the hardest part, you're well on your way to get to 10k by next year, it's just a matter of doing a single video that goes viral...you've been way more consistent than me, congrats polyglot sister ! I can even see you invested into a good mic ! I'm at 600...which 450 came from only one video....I wish I had persevered but I got distracted and life got in the way, I went thru a rough 6 months...and frankly I had way more urgent priorities like my financial situation, when you're not in the right head space, it's even harder when you put in so much effort into a video and then get very little views....it's very depressing...anyway I'm glad you're still in the game ! I totally agree with you. In 2011, I've started to learning English, but I was only studying grammar, because I didn't know that the immersion method works and I hadn't even heard about it, but I was listening to a lot of songs in English and reading the lyrics and the translation into Portuguese (My native language, I'm from Brazil) , singing with the right pronounciations and that was helping me a lot. In 2017, when I've started doing immersion in English watching contents, I already knew some words in English. Even though in between 2011 and 2017 I was stoping learning English (Through grammar) , I was listening to songs in English with lyrics, translation and singing and I was learning English accidentally, that was also why I had the good reading in English even though I didn't know the language very well. I think music is a very useful and powerful tool for learning new languages.

A curious fact about Japanese is that is was originally only spoken, then they started to use Chinese symbols to write everything but that wasn't working so well so then they invented katakana to match the sounds in Japanese with specific symbols but women were not allowed to write so women invented hiragana with the same sounds as katakana to communicate between themselves!

Im still kinda confused on the difference between a system like Hangbul vs Devanagari. I’ve been learning hindi and Devnagri alphabet is ordered and broken down yes by syllable/sound but also in order of how to make that sound all fricatives together all dental all retroflex all etc by whether or not you aspirate it/dont aspirate, and vocalize and dont vocalize. the writing system in this way teaches you how the mouth should be when pronouncing the word. another example is a chandarbindu which tells you to nasalize/permit soundflow through the nose, and the bindu under the retoflex and gutteral sounds telling you to hold the sound in a specific region of the mouth. if you have any suggested readings comparing these Id love to learn more because in my perspective the hindi alphabet teaches us how you should shape your mouth when enunciating the word.

Abugidas and syllabaries are different. If you write "kakikukeko" in Nagari (abugida), the shape representing "k" stays the same, and the vowels go to the left, under, and above it. If you write "kakikukeko" in kana (syllabary), the five shapes have nothing in common. Egyptian is a combination of logographic and abjad. Some characters mean "walk forward" or "god" or the like; others denote consonants or pairs or triples of consonants. Egyptian and Arabic are both Afro-Asiatic and share a morphology in which consonants carry most of the meaning.

You are still young... I'm 50, learning is the process we have in school. After youth, life begins and it is about specialization. If you would live in enviroment of your languages or would be connected with your languages as a teacher only in these cases you have possibility to mantain your languages at 50-50 of level at the end of school. I never learned English during my childhood and adolescence. When I was 16, I saw some American movies. From these movies I became this language without realizing it in my youth. This language reappeared in my life at the age of 34. I had only the understanding of the language from the native speakers and had no word of it in my vocabulary. I had been trying to recover this language without knowing how I had been able to understand the language from the natives. I managed to breathe new life into my language, but it was very hard and it took me about 18 years.

I like the fact that we are interested in learning the same languages: English, Spanish, French, Russian and Arabic. The only difference is that I am a native Russian speaker, so I had to learn English as a foreign language. Having achieved a pretty high level in European languages from this list, I started to learn Arabic, which is really hardcore😂 I am focusing predominantly on Turkish right now and since I've also added Arabic, Turkish doesn't seem that hard any more😂

You don't really lose anything. Even dabbling in a language for some time helps you have a better start when you try to learn it for real. If you reach a B1 level or above, you could go years without using it, and get it back at the same level in a matter of weeks. I thought I was losing my Italian after years barely using it, and after reading two books in Italian, my Italian vocabulary has never been as large as it is now.
