70's - 80's FLAT TRACK- RACING HARD!
The 70'sand 80's were a great time to be young and alive in America- not perfect - but pretty damn good. If your sport was flat track motorcycles it was even better. A lot of these pics were nationally known racers or champions AND some of the pics were of local races-- they are perhaps even better images. A couple are from 60's or 90's and a few are even newer than that like one my favorites - Johnny Bova (on a Hooligan) from last year! Hope you enjoy.
Still photo montage of Vintage Flat Track. I do not own the rights to these photos-- most originally published by the old "Cycle News" or other print magazines of the 1970s or 80's and a lot have been 'scarfed' off the internet - others publicly posted by users of various forums. There may be a couple of pics from the late 60's, 90's, 2000's in this tribute - but if you were part of this - it does not change the vibe. This video is not monetized. The only folks that can make money on this video is You Tube (advertising) and music producers of background music used (royalties paid by You Tube). Kudos to the old 'Cycle News' and individual Photographers who captured these moments. 40 or 50 years ago - who knew we would still be around to enjoy them?- Some of us are not.
A few of the individual professional photographers from the era are still around (2019) - some of these photos are undoubtedly theirs-- They are still (or were) selling a lot of pics they sold at the tracks back in the day-- If you were a racer- you knew them-- If you are descendant (unfortunate) you could contact them with your racers number and tracks they rode- they may be able to hook you up with some pics of them. Three I know of are-- Bert Shepard (the eastern part of the US was where he took most of his pics); Bert has a Facebook page; And Dan Mahony (the western part of the US- I believe he specialized in) -- Dan has a Facebook page--"Mahony Racing Photos"- His photos are first rate; and Mitch Friedman- an excellent photographer on the West Coast. Paul Schwab’s and Mike Stuhler’s (Stu's shots and FB) photos can be described as art and James Grant's of the newer era are just as good...

70's Midwest Flat Track UPDATED!

Updated- TH-cam flagged some audio fixed in this version..... Kenny Sargent, Friends/Family and some very GOOD National guys as well from arguably the golden age of American Flat Track. Bert Shepard was the photographer of the professionally taken photos.

Nice, great pictures & tons of unforgettable times, Thanks for posting! This is purely a suggestion, so please don't be angry.I don't know about the rest of the people, depends on what type of video too, & I love music but a bitche'n soundtrack behind so many cool pictures would be even cooler maybe with a compilation of the announcer who used to do all of the miles, I should know but don't, anyone can tell you his name right now except me obviously & no doubt you know it too. But him calling the races in the background, all different pieces of any races & don't have to match the picture but would add something unique to your video as opposed to a big hair bands & top 40 bubblegum, yes some were real good & I like em' a lot, im no authority & I am not even close to making ANY videos& know less than an ordinary house cat about them, I do know what keeps me interested, I click off more videos because of their music than anything though. (no offense intended) And it'd really be a nice touch for all of us who were there, spectating or racing. But the announcer had a voice that was made for flat track, it could' be" Roxy Rockwood" might've been the name im thinking of but I still think it was another guy, but until 60 some people reply & say his name, (he was probably more well known than "Bouncing Bob" the starter who used to flip in the air, and ( actually caused a serious crash at one race by accidentally landing in the path of a rider, maybe a mile pro race IDK, that's not the point) remember it was my idea, who gave you the tip, lol..ill even start it off, Awesome VIDEO! BEST EVER! SISKEL & EBERT CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD, TWO THUMBS UP! LOL.. PS id make my own video if I thought I knew anything, so ill spectate & watch other people's😜✌️🏁than Ms again for posting & I clicked the like button.

Man, I had fun in the 70's....great aspirations of maybe winning a race....ya' could dream big, and just maybe...ride your bike to glory...I loved flat track racing and whole inner circle. My mentor was Bob Vaughn of Sunny Valley in Southern Oregon...he was awesome, won races all the time on his Black & Orange Triumph 500....So incredibly smooth on the track, ---- he never let me feel sorry for myself if I lost. Good times for sure! Great time to be a young man who was fascinated with flat trackin'!!!

I new Randy Cleek when he was just about 4 years old. He was always around at his father's motorcycle shop.(B&M cycle) in Shawnee okla. He use to ride a little mini bike out back of the shop. The mini bike had no brakes so when he wanted to stop he would just run into someone's leg. 😂😂🤣🤣😆😆 He was very ornery. We were just 13 years old then. Got to see him grow up and develope into a fine young man and racer. Terrible when we lost him. R I P Randy!!!! Nice video.

@@fromtheflattrackwayback When I was riding at Ascot a Junior rider named John Sperry was riding a Trackmaster Suzuki 500 twin tuned by one of the guys at U.S. Suzuki. He did pretty well on it considering what he was up against. The Water Buffalos were too heavy. I always thought a Kawasaki triple with re-phased 'Big Bang' crank might've worked better than the Kanemoto bikes, but re-phasing the cranks on those things might've opened a whole 'nother can of worms. Thanks for all the great photos.

I never raced, but back in the seventies I had some friends that did. I went to Gary Nixon’s shop in Timonium MD, with R Reeves to get parts for his bike, and when we walked in, Gary was talking to Richard like they were buddies. A kind of brotherhood I guess. There was a leather racing suit that Gary had crashed in hanging on the wall in his shop. I was amazed at how much punishment those leather’s had absorbed. I used to read his Cycle-News mags all the time, so all these names are familiar. Nice pictures you have here, the seventies were a blast !
