Great interview. I miss working with Elmar!

The recording of Bronstein and Max Tar that Elmar refers to was the soundtrack to the Heddy Lamarr film "Ecstasy" from 1933. The music is charming gypsy music for two violins and runs throughout the film. Bronstein told me that they went to the studio and were told to schmaltz it up. I love this great clip from both of you! Dad much preferred audiences in England since they were more sophisticated and more deeply understood his great artistry. He made it a point like Heifetz or Rubenstein to basically allow the music to emerge through both hands. He disdained extraneous movements not contributing to the music In Switzerland where I lived at the time Pop played a terrific concert A famous Swiss violinist came and was beside himself..he asked Dad to see his Rode Strad . Hans Heinz Schneeberger was shocked when Dad handed over the Rocca. by the way - Enrico! Of course the Strad was wonderful but the great lesson was .it is the player not the fiddle he could make any fiddle or viola sound as his fans know. I only recall a very funny incident one time when he was showing a section in an orchestra somewhere and the leader a well meaning player gave my father his fiddle to demonstrate to the players. Dad dug in in his characteristic way and the violin choked almost falling apart. His students in the mixed group laughed so hard. My father was furious..his amazing ability to bring the finest out of any fiddle was thwarted. The owner had kept the violin in poor condition and it was as though the violin was for years imbued with bad playing vibes from the well intentioned naive player! By the way I was in the orchestra when my father conducted the Spohr Gesangscene no. 8 for you Ida. You were terrific and my father was so proud of you. Eric Shumsky

Haunting, historical, resilient....well documented though the survivors and through the photographs....a history lesson for all that should not ever be repeated.
