Ski Club 18 Via Ferrata
มุมมอง 702 หลายเดือนก่อน
Last of our Dolomites series has us tackle the notorious Ski Club 18 via ferrata. The ski club ferrata was created in 2009 and is graded a 5B. along the approach you'll see a ski here and there pointing you to the start of the route. My guess would be a nod to the active skiing that happens here in the winter. A fabtastic route that could be rated an 18 out of 10! This route is part of the hard...

Via Delle Trincee Via Ferrata La Mesola

The fourth part to our Dolomites series has brought us to La Mesola for the Trincee via ferrata. It is also known as the via delle Trincee. The ferrata can be split into 3 sections, section 1 the crux, section 2 where the WW1 remnants start and section 3 the tunnels. It can be a long day out but it has several escape points if you wish to cut it short. An excellent via ferrata away from the cro...

One thing to realise is that the grade also reflects the commitment level. A grade 2 can be harder than a grade 3 but there will always be the opportunity to find an easier alternative. On a grade 3 there is no alternative.
@simonrangeley exactly, the easier the grade the more likely a different line or bypass can be found
A totally different ball game in winter…a great day and great company. Thanks mate 👍
@@OutandaboutwithSpencer a different ballgame for sure. It's great seeing the difference between summer and winter for comparison
Awesome mate 👌🏻👌🏻
@@benbryan8070 sure was pal 👍
One of our longest winter mountain days yet! Spectacular finding the arete in the conditions we did!
Spectacular.
@@eplane thanks, it felt like that as well 👍
I done this yesterday in icy conditions and was the scariest scramble ive done, worse than crib goch in my opinion
@Django4 I chickened out on my first go. Was it snowy and or Slick?
Oof, that belaying at 6:30 though. You pinching the rope like that isn't going to do anything if your buddy falls after dropping your brake hand to reposition. Get an ABD or belay off the anchor in guide mode. Or if you're going to use a non-ABD tube make sure your brake hand is always prepared to lock off.
@JohnSerjeantson actually upgraded to the dmm pivot. Good point though, was one of my green moments 😅
did u drill that first anchor through the ice yourself or was it already there? is this a thing? How strong is that kind of anchor, seems like it potentially wouldnt hold your weight? Never seen that before! -second comment
@@Boyko1996 yes drilled ourselves, it's called an abalakov or v thread. You would be surprised how strong it is! After abseil you can retrieve your rope without leaving any gear behind
@@clogsonthemountain thanks a lot for sharing the knowledge! looking forward to giving it a shot <3
Why is the ice bumpy - first comment
@@Super_epic_rat it's a frozen waterfall
Thanks
Did it in wet and snowy conditions yesterday I can safely say that I won’t be doing that again 😅 yet again I have cheated 💀 or at the verry least a serious injury 😱
Different ballgame in winter isn't it? At least you're ok 👍
@@clogsonthemountain certainly is. Dexter gully looks an awful way up even when it’s dry. at least it’s ticked off the list now 😅
@666steff666 about to set off on my winter scrambles on Sunday night. Starting in Scotland 🙌
We did this route on Sunday both pinnacle and porcupine ridge Fantastic 👍🏾
@naveedarshad5608 both great routes! Did you do left or right on the pinnacle of pinnacle ridge and did you do the crux on porcupine?
Hi, I’m new to this, so sorry if it’s a rookie question. Are these boots suitable for climbing Mont Blanc in winter? I believe you did your ascent in summer. Would rigid boots be better for winter? Thanks!!
@danielmarquez3814 would recommend something warmer at lower temperatures like the la sportiva Nepal. The Aequilibrium will suit for temperatures just below freezing but can feel chilly.
We are attempting this route in 2 days I’ve watched your video and bald scramblers video I’m guessing after pinnacle ridge you go up and leftwards towards porcupine ridge missing the rib on the right hand side ?
@naveedarshad5608 keep left yes. Bit of a pull uphill but worth it. Crux is very tasty! Enjoy 👍
Thanks mate we did the route this Sunday, pinnacle ridge was very short but we both got the money shot taking on the 2nd pinnacle on the left, some other climbers took some great pics of us both hanging off 😂 found porcupine ridge fairly easily it’s a great scramble I scaled the tower blocking the way on left trending line it was fantastic, the crux after I found quite easier to fly up Hopefully be posting some videos of my excursions on uk climbing website later this week Have you tried Bryant’s gully from Llanberis pass upto esgair felen ? I’ve done it 3 times and I know a variation on the 3rd section that is absolutely fantastic scrambling
@naveedarshad5608 no yet, never found it in condition funny enough.
Great video. Thank you.
@@md8850-j7s thanks 😊
class video
@@lewishikes thanks 😊
Why did u have a screw gate on a knotted sling above the belay device on the abseil? I'm trying to think of a reason for that? Did u have a prusic as backup
@robmckinley5475 screwgate was used in the anchor before for keeping safe. When I go i usually clip the gate on the pull rope if abseiling on double rope to avoid confusion on which rope to pull. I love this method
Nice one mate 👍
Great video, really enjoyed it. Definitely one to add to the “to do list”. We look forward to seeing more of your adventures! Liked 👍🏼 and subscribed from a fellow TH-camr 👌

@@EarthWatcher736 thanks 😊
Notch Arete is the best one 💪🏻
10 great scrambles on Tryfan! I'm sure i will find another 10...
Milestone gully in the most atrocious weather…thanks for that! I’ve still got the scars on my shin from that one! 😂
@OutandaboutwithSpencer was a good day though 😅
@ certainly was 👍
They're not bad boots, but hurt the tops of my toes. I'm probably yet to find the right sock/boot balance tbh lol
@GogsDavies a good quality sock makes a huge difference 👌
Hi Scrambling Dutchman. I liked your other video on PBA. It had more of a story: story is absolutely critical in film-making. POV footage isn't enough on its own. I think there must always be commentary with it, otherwise hardly anyone will want to watch it. YT is so competitive for people's attention these days. I think PBA right-hand goes up the right of the pyramid. I think you did either South West Buttress or Furey Road both f3c.
Lovely jubbly 👍
@@OutandaboutwithSpencer definitely mate 👌
Spectacular. Thank you for sharing your amazing adventures.

A fantastic via ferrata away from the crowds
Absolutely drop dead stunning views. And that Via Ferrata looks in good condition and well maintained, some don't. Some serious exposure there too!!
@The_Reality_Filter yeah it was a fantastic one mate 👍
Nice one 👍
@OutandaboutwithSpencer the route I'll take you on next year mate 👍
I did very similar route this morning but I crossed over the waterfall half way up the staircase and went left which was a bad mistake managed to traverse back to the right higher up DO NOT wander left while climbing the staircase hellish grassy ledges await you there ! North west face looks appealing I also noticed the quartz band running across it when you top out of the staircase I continued up left just as you did towards cneifion arete conditions were so wet this morning 🤦🏽♂️
@naveedarshad5608 going too far left you're venturing on rock climbing territory, plenty of people been cragfast there. The north West face route is a great little scramble indeed
Can you escape from the idwal staircase to avoid the continuation? Today we're about to find out!
Awesome video 👏 I did Tryfan via north ridge yesterday and already done Crib Goch, loved them both. Planning my next scramble so this video is very helpful 👍
@@swin1306 great stuff glad you enjoyed it 👍
@@clogsonthemountain yes I did, have you done Jack's Rake in the Lake District by any chance? Been looking at that one it looks good
@swin1306 had an attempt two years ago but unfortunately it was too wet and someone lost their life two weeks before in similar conditions so I decided to back down at the tarn. It is on my list to do though 👍
@@clogsonthemountain Ah right ok, hopefully we both get to complete it soon then 👍 It's rubbish when you can't do what you set out for, but safety has to come 1st. I was supposed to be carrying on from Tryfan up to Glyder Fach and Glyder Fawr but it got so windy and wasn't safe at all so I had to cut my route short unfortunately 😕
@swin1306 safety always comes first, it will be there for another day 👍
