6040 CNC review of my setup and cutting aluminum part 1
6040 CNC machine review of my setup and some helpful upgrade options. I have upgraded my machine with a Gecko 540, limit/home switches, jog controller, bigger collet set for my ER11 spindle (up to 1/4 size), air nozzle.
If you just want to watch it cutting you can watch part 2 th-cam.com/video/A5e8iEJBxWY/w-d-xo.html
Info:
6040 CNC with 800 Watt spindle
feed rate = 300
plunge rate = 50
spindle speed = 400 (max for my VFD 24k RPM)
*Note these speeds are what I am using in the video I have ran the machine faster and it works fine but I don't mind waiting longer and knowing the feed rate will be good. I am sure you can increase the feed if you wanted but I would start here if you are just learning*
Jog controller is a XHC HB04
Controller is a Geko 540 with 48v power supply

Well I bet you will be doing many more upgrades soon. Nothing wrong with that. We are all learning. One if the first things I've learned was that I shouldn't have both Chinese CNC in the first place. I should have built my own design CNC directly and learn from that process. Any how first upgrade lesson was that no supported linear devices have nothing to do in the CNC machine. Hence one if the first upgrades fir you should be replacing X gantry linear rods with supported linear rails. Than changing Z gantry to. Then make sure your Z axis Nema 23 does not allow lead screw or ball screw to retract. There are two kinds of Nema stepper motors. One integrates a security ring that fixes the axle and other kind does not. If you have latter you can install small load bearing between the coupling abd housing of the motor. So when lead screw or ball screw starts lowering the Z axis coupling will not move up. Results on more accuracy. Next upgrade will be simple and efficient. Just change the bed for solid steel or aluminum one. Get machined one with high grade flatness and screw it down. Make some fixing holes in the grid on it and tap it to accept hold down clamps. After that you can think of stronger spindle motor while your CNC will not flex any more. Last thing to upgrade will be Y gantry linear supported rods. Once they develop the play change them with linear rails to. Something like HGR 25 will do.

Oh my god that sounds disgusting... You can literally see the huge vibrations. You are milling aluminium extrusions with an endmill > RPM down and Feed way more up. For those you can use Feedrates up to 1000 mm/min and RPM ~10000. That should eliminate that vibrations

Thank you for the advice. This was still in the stages of me learning and using BobCad was not as controllable as I hoped (it was an old version 22 though) I need to make some new videos of this cutting using Fusion 360 I now have spiral plungin and my feeds/speeds figured out. I ended up getting an older Novakon NM135 upright mill which is way more capable so I dont use this CNC much anymore.

Slow down your rpm circle it and move down at the same time don't plunge a endmill this is painful to here. I do this for a living at least kick up the feeds. The endmill will come with recommended feeds and speeds just look on the packing it came in

max cox man, I am watching it after struggling with mine haha. I used 6mm 2 flute flat end mill, and it wasnt that bad actually. Lots of vibrations from shitty frame tho. I first spiraled 10mm inside a part with 0.3 spiral angle and then machined the whole depth in once but with 0.1mm at a time. And it wasnt too bad actually. Had to bump up rpm all the way up to 16000 almost tho. Probably wrong, but lower value didnt sound right at all. And feed was like 300mm/m or so. Have to play more with it. That aluminum extrusion floor is such shit tbh, it is a part of a problem for sure.

Does the Gecko 540 come with its own cord or does it use the usb? Just bought a 6040 to do some engraving in my work shop. With the help of my brother in law who works with cncs for a living, we are trying to get mine running but there is no such luck. The software that came with it (was not mach3) is junk and doesn't seem to recognize that the cnc is even connected. Any advice would be awesome.

I feel as if my ears were just raped. You should be able to get some feeds and speeds from the tool manufacturer. Also there is tons of info to figure out the math and or you can get a calculator for determining them. Also use the shortest tool possible. The right feed and speed will help your wallet out too and not just your ears as it cuts down on tool wear.

Is that endmill a center-cutting one? I'm no expert but the plunges are chattering bad, try helical paths. The spindle speed is far too high, cut at 8-12k RPM or take the chance and feed faster. Any rotation of the tool that doesnt *bite* into the metal hardens it so it gets harder to cut the next pass. Eventually it does bite but your making aluminum powder not chips. I just got my Chinese spindle 2.2Kw so I will see how I get along. lol. Great videos overall, both parts 1 & 2. Cheers!

I was just about to say the same thing! You shouldn't have surface burrs like that if you are CUTTING rather than rubbing the workpiece. I made a servo mounting plate for a model powerboat. It took me FOUR expensive attempts cutting the 8000 series Al I had before I go the settings right. Next time I'll practice on scrap pieces instead of stupidly expensive aerospace grade material.

FYI In LinuxCNC, when you touch off the tool to the part, you don't need to move the tool 1/2 diameter then zero...you can hit TOUCH OFF button and enter the 0.125 (ex) and the axis becomes that value. A G0X0 would then physically move to your zero point. Just a step saved. I am sure Mach has the same function. Also, for Z touch-off I use a piece of plain paper which is 5mil's thick and very consistent. It's easy to feel the bit on the paper when moving the paper around. This is also good for testing a part's surface is coincident with the Z plane and you're vice or hold down hasnt squeezed it out. You can also use a tool blank as a better probe for XY zeroing. Also, for simpler tool changes setup a tool height probe and call as an external sub-routine after the TxMx code. Just put the tool in the collet at any length and the sub-routine measures and compensates. Very handy! :)
