Fiddlehead Acres - Off Grid Alaska
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 11 ต.ค. 2021
In May of 2021, we took a vacation to Alaska. Two days into our ten-day trip we knew this is where we were supposed to be, which turned our vacation into a house/land hunt. In June we had an offer accepted on a parcel of raw land, and in July we took another trip out to Alaska to see it in person for the first time. We moved our whole lives to this spot in April of 2022, and this is our adventure.

why we live off grid in Alaska.
No it’s not cold, the sweatshirt if for the skeeters. Of course there are challenges living the way we do, I don’t deny that at all. However, we want to be challenged, we want to learn and grow through it all. We never want to become complacent and Alaska certainly won’t let you. Challenges are what shape and mold you into a stronger person, they teach you valuable lessons but that doesn’t make it hard in my mind. What we have to show for it is we DID THE DAMN THING! And we’re THRIVING because of it! I just don’t want amenities or convenience anymore, I want to be mindful and live slowly.

Do you have solar panels for electricity or only the generator? Food preservation, do you have a deep freeze(chest freezer) and refrigerator? I saw that you can a lot. How do you handle the darkness of winter and the mosquitoes in the warmer months? We live off grid in Manitoba Canada, solar and batteries, with generator backup. Where we live we get the cold, but decent amounts of sunshine in the winter, and our area mosquitoes are not a big issue except early morning or late evening.
I can only laugh about wasting 15 min of time realizing you re-start the project at 16 min.
Wow, you should do a video on how you take off the flat lids off with the lid remover.. that was amazing
Came here for off grid laundry info, staying because I love how your shower is built. Is that corrugated plastic or metal? Do you have a video of how it's built?
I found the vid of your shower build, watching it soon. And subscribed. Can't wait to check out your other off grid vids too.
New subs here!!! Awesome channel we hope to head north soon it’s been a goal for awhile! We wish you folks good health and happiness
You two are amazing doing all of this alone!
I just found you a few weeks ago so going through your TH-cam videos. Very interesting!
My priority is to make enough money to go off grid like you and not have to work. Go a little further out than you are and be 98% living off the land. Before I get too old or fat 😊. We need to come visit during the cold to see if we can handle it. That's the biggest issue/hurdle.
Have you seen the aurora there? I'm sure you have.
Yes! It’s amazing!
Myself and the woman I love just want to get some land and leave the rest of the world behind.
Don't we all? Or is that a smart person thing? 😂
From someone who's doing roughly the same as you and your husband, that was well said. Success is defined in many different ways, and everyone has different priorities!
Happy to see you on YT again :)
Nice build. Always good to see when folks get it right.
Thank you!
When she starts talking about "wool insulation" at around 23:15, she's talking about rock wool, not sheep's wool. (Lol, I had to put this clarification in, since I was listening to it while doing other things, and that threw me for a moment. Why? Because one of the I was working on was a crocheting project! XD)
I lost a lot of liquid but they sealed is that ok!
If you set a cup of water on counter when your cutting onions the smell isn't as strong and it won't bother your eyes.❤
Is there ANYTHING modern humans can do without thinking about SELLING it? I mean making the stuff of cob is a very worthy skill with water and other ingredients involved... but the brainwashing...the switch of mind from learning something profoundly earthy and freely provided by nature and nurture is corrupted by the notion of shopping so crassly allowed to collide with and skew this process.
Okay I just seen this so LOL I know that girl just love playing in that mud she's still a kid you can tell LOL
Yaaay
I was wondering if I can cook the food first before I canned it. You answered that in this video. I saved this. Thank you!
Same here saw no one mention it
But what if you want to use 5 eggs from the jar in 6 months, you have to do the process again or not?
Good stuff
I see it not stand the test of time … and I predict fire and danger …. I would of built it out of welded metal
Few years ago, amiant was the best material for insulation my friend, but was very bad for our health! Why you trast the perlite?
I really like how dirty you get. 😍
Welcome back.
When will people understand that rocket stoves are not more heat in long run its just more heat at once …everyone wants heat to last all day not get to 40 C in 5 minutes than freeze rest of day
Pardon my ignorance, but... I see the high/tall tunnel & I understand that there's a passageway between it and the shorter tunnel. What I don't see is any opening in the shorter tunnel for you to put the wood into. If 'Rocket Mass Heater Part 2' addresses this, I apologize. I just saw that there was a part two.
I love the look!!!
How many cords do you go through per winter roughly? That rocket mass heater seems like the most efficient system possible. 4'x8'x4'= 1 cord.
This is such a cool heating system!
My man would kill me if I made him wash clothes in a small washer like that. 😂
Nobody understands what a feat this is.
My home had one of them stoves the previous owner had a professional co. Build it it was about 18 foot long we used it for the first year my house has 2 stoves the other one is a standard wood stove and after a year I took a sledge hammer to it and put In A wood stove there not as great as people say I think people say how good they are because that's what they want to believe after spending all that money and time but I have had one and it was nice and well built but they do not compare to a wood stove and they take up alot of room that's my 2 cents from someone that's been there and done that.
Thanks to watching your videos and as cold as my house is right now im convinced we need a rocket mass heater for next year. I'm curious about how much it cost yall in materials??
this is awesome thank you
How would you be able to tell when the cobb is dry,
I love how ya'll make it look like even I can do it. Thank you for making this as simple as possible
The roof is channeling you, stay off my roof. Please get a mud rake. Long handle stay on the ground.💖
The first thing I do with my metal roof in the winter is…….stay off.
May need padding next time 😅 Would throwing down some sand on the parts that have been shoveled help with traction? I’m trying to think of something that wouldn’t also mess up the metal in the long run like salt would.
Please don't do it this way again..... You are going to be bruised for weeks, and you were very fortunate you didn't fall off. Been there. Ain't fun
This isn’t the first time I’ve done this and it’s a very low drop without snow and with snow there is no drop. I’m not very concerned about falling off the roof but I am careful none the less and I will continue to do it because it has to be done. A snow rake does not work for this roof.
Shout Out Spud
Holy crap be careful😮
There is a proper process and it starts with a steeper pitched roof :D
Try staying on knees and just push it works "sometimes" 😅
Both of you are doing great job and is useful thanks❤❤❤
fantastic video! Glad you hit water.
How hot does that barrel get? Any problems obtaining home owners insurance?
Great job looks expensive. And easy to clean. 💖
