Folding Cart for Heavy Kayaks such as a Native Manta Ray Propel

This shows a creative design for a kayak cart in hopes that it will inspire others to build their own custom carts. The cart weighs less than 10 pounds, folds up to fit in the kayak's cargo hold, and can support a boat weighing well over 100 pounds and probably over 200 pounds. I only tested it with a 100 pound load.

Sure appreciate you doing this
You are welcome. Doing things like this keeps me busy.
I have a 29k and I will be attempting to repair a leg too. I will have to watch that part again. I will probably just weld, fill and grind, as I don’t plan to paint quite yet.
Welding cast iron can be tricky. What I did was to make a quick tack weld, let it cool down slowly, and then repeat. It takes a lot of patience and time but reduces the threat of cast iron cracking from thermal expansion and contraction.
Very helpful indeed. I will be making a table like yours. The restored machine is to be used in a charity workshop.
Glad you were inspired. My drawings are for a model 29-4 and I see that you are restoring a model 29K. If the dimensions are different, please share your experience. After I made the table, I saw a picture of one made by another man that was slightly different. Instead of making it removable by placing the supporting board in the notch, he mounted the bottom board on a hinge so it is permanently attached and just folds down.
Thank you for your helpful video. I am restoring a similar machine. I plan to make a table.
You are welcome.
Que presio tiene
I'm sorry, translators translate this question differently. This translate says you are asking how much pressure the machine has. All I can say is it easily sews through 1/4 inch of leather (6.3 mm). Another translation says you are asking how much it costs. It is not for sale. If you mean how much I spent to restore it, I did not keep records but it was probably about $100 US for all of the materials and supplies.

I just got one of these machines I would love to have a table to use. Would you make a video on how you did that please.
Your request has been granted. th-cam.com/video/scJtBCDUW1w/w-d-xo.html
I have one and I love it. Have fun with it cause they work great.
I just got a machine like this today. It's INOP, but looks like all parts are there. I restored a similar one many years ago, so I have a limited experience. My questions: how did you determined its 1908? Who sells parts and decals?
My reply is based on what little I learned researching this. This is the only time I restored one. If I am wrong about something, or if someone has more resources, please chime in. First the age. Singer used to assign a block of serial numbers to be used. When they needed more they would assign a new block. My serial number was part of a block assigned early 2008. That summer they issued a new block of numbers so I assumed it was made between or around those dates. If you search online for singer machines, year made, and serial number you should find it. There are a lot of singer enthusiasts. There is at least one online store that sells used parts for that model. Amazon has some parts but they are parts made in China for the model 29K. Some fit and some fit after drilling and filing the parts. You can find parts on eBay. They may be used genuine parts or cheap Chinese parts for the 29K. I was not confident that I could restore this so I did not want to put a lot of money into it. I bought cheap parts directly from China through AliExpress. Some parts came in a few weeks and others took a month to get here. Download a parts manual for the machine. There are free ones out there. Use the part numbers to search for what you need. There are several forums online for singer machines and for leather working. You can find them by searching for your machine model. It is on the forums that I found someone that sells parts, the company that sells decals, and the plans for building the table top. If you go to a modern sewing machine store in a mall, you are not going to find parts or supplies other than oil and maybe thread if you are lucky. I bought needles (leather and cloth), thread, threading tool, bobbins, and leather belting from either AliExpress or Amazon all of which worked. Good luck with your project and please post a picture when you finish.
@larrywydra thank you for your reply. I'm on the very first stage of research, since I got my machine on ebay, I picked it up yesterday. I restored a similar one some 30 years ago, but at that time i was more interested in its functionality, and less in its historic value or origins (it was in 1993, so it was a pre-internet era for many, me included). I used it for 2 years while fixing footwear as my main source of my income, and for some 5 years as an extra income while I studied in university. I had to leave that machine in my home country, I hope somebody is using it now. As for this machine, since it looks like it has all parts, and nothing is visibly broken, I decided to restore it to full functionality. However, I'm not sure about paint job, as far as I know, the paint job done wrong can negatively impact the value of such device. I'm not selling it, but still, I want to do things right way. So, I thing I'm on my "trip of thousand miles", and I made the first step yesterday.
@@igerce I just got my machine to work and did not plan to restore it to its original condition. Restoration, especially painting it, is a level of complexity beyond what I wanted to do. Good luck fixing it and I hope you find success in your new business. I gave business to a local cobbler 3 times several years ago. I was so glad he was here.
This place advertises decals for the 29 but I don't know if it is for the 29-4 or the 29-K www.singerdecals.com/model-29/
Glad to see you fixing the Singer up...I have that exact same model machine
Where do you find parts for it when it breaks down?
Mostly eBay but it almost never breaks down...but if you Google there are companies that have or manufacture the parts...it takes a little looking but possible
@@jenkins1979I bought most of my parts through AliExpress. They had the best prices but it can take a month to get parts.
I am SO VERY happy that you rescued that patch machine!! I hate when people just throw stuff away that has value.
Agree. i believe in 4 R's in this order, reuse, repair, recycle, rubbish.
I recognize a talented engineer when I see one.
You got me. The tee-shirt must have given it away.
I don't get people are trowing this away in the first place, eventually this is how most of this beautiful machines Dissappear in the first place
In this case, my neighbor got this and many other items from his father's house after his dad died. They were stored unused in my neighbors basement for many years rusting away. One day my neighbor decided to sell his house and move so he got some helpers and threw out a lot a lot of junk. This sewing machine was one of 4 things I rescued. A lot of the other things really were junk. A lot of beautiful machines were melted down to reclaim the metal during WWII as part of the war effort.
@@larrywydra I have a few of these machines, I try to care for some of these, I have a Barnes No.4 treadle lathe and also a normal singer sewing machine and a bunch of others.

Congratulions! You restored a excellent machine and a piece of history.
Thank you. This project ended up being more taxing than most. After fixing a problem, I didn't know what other issues would surface and if they could be solved with my limited resources.
I’ve always wondered how machines like this worked. What a wonderful restoration and an awesome way to turn back time. Thank you so much!!

That is very good Sir. At 2:04 mins you show your bracketing method, yet I could not discern them in your working version, and if you did use brackets wouldn't you then loose the parallelogram stow-away capability which in itself is a very useful feature. Kind regards.
It requires precise measurements so the pivot points are equal distant apart so the crossbars are equal length and parallel. One of these days I'll upload a video of an improved version that I made last summer.

It made me cry for Alice😢
You are not alone. This is such a sad story it has made others cry too.
Out of curiosity, what type tools do you like to carry with you? I have basic screwdrivers, pliers, sockets, and an adjustable wrench. I also have a Flashlight, jumper cables, first-aid kit on top. I have a pouch of zip ties, cargo straps and Wipes. What else is a constant for you?
I carry everything you mentioned except the wipes but my cargo straps and first aid kit are under the seat along with rope, duct tape, and a sewing kit. In addition I have a strap for towing, hacksaw, wood saw, shovel, electric drill with bits and hole saws, caliper, tape measure, sewing awl, and assortment of small screws, washers, and nuts. I needed a few things last week and so I am going to add a multimeter, spare hacksaw blades, and a file. With all that stuff, there is still room for more.
@Larry Wydra Yes, I also have the sewing kit, ductape, and folding shovel too. I like the screw assortment idea. I think I will add a triangle file to my kit aswell. Interesting to carry a hacksaw and wood saw, but I can see applications for it. I just remembered I have a tarp, emergency blanket, small food, a lighter, knife and water. I almost always have a case of water with me too. On longer drives I have my screw gun etc.
So Funny
So you left out that foam thing? I can't believe Subaru did not make that foam thing fit with a full-size spare tire. That was a very bad design flaw. I heard an Onyx has a full size tire and the foam insert is different and may fit an Outback. We'll see.
Props bro, awesome set up
Thank you
Nice idea! We have AAA so I’m thinking of taking the tire totally out. 👍🏻
If you take the tire out, make sure you don't drive out of cell phone range.
That sounds like a really bad idea.
hello, how much do you want for the plastic organiser you removed?
I am going to hang on to it for a while. I may restore the car someday if I sell it.
Nice. I may need to build something similar. Thanks for the idea. How though do you get one into the j bars with that?
I don't. The J bars are for my wife's kayak which is a lot lighter than this one.
what schedule pvc where u using?
Good question and an over site on my part. I used 2" schedule 40 because that is what I had laying around. Schedule 20 should work too but I don't have a piece to measure. The final OD of a stretched schedule 20 will be smaller than a stretched schedule 40 so it would be marginally more efficient but it is also more flexible so I don't know if it will stay put. If anyone made one out of scheduled 20, can you please share your experience with the community in a comment.
Love the ingenuity! I’m curious what you think of a product for this method called the Channel Loader.
I saw a lady use one of those. She said it worked great when it was new but then it started to slide and fall off after a while. I originally wanted to buy a Yakima show boat but they were out of stock at the time and that is why I built this. After 2 years I am still using it, It works great on level ground but am finding that on an uphill grade the kayak likes to slide backwards making it tricky to use. When the car is angled sideways, it likes to slide off of the side. An improvement in this design would be to add something on the ends that would stop it from sliding off. It only fell off the side once and nothing was damaged but it has slid sideways several times.
WOW sir this is awesome thanks for posting it
You are welcome.
Great video. Thanks.
I absolutely love your humor! and the fact that we are all considering pool noodles as "building materials"

Do you have a link to where you got the bucket?
I bought it at a farm supply store. They had 3 different sizes and I don't remember which one I used because at the moment, that car is 2000 miles away. This may have been the one but I'm not sure. www.fleetfarm.com/detail/little-giant-3-gal-plastic-utility-pan/0000000375197?Ntt=Plastic+Utility+Pan&_requestid=178971
Hi there. Nice video. Does removing the jack and/or spare tire interfere with the TPMS?
The spare tire is never removed. This is all built on top of the tire. I don't know if there is a sensor on the spare. I have not gotten a warning for low pressure yet.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooo
Awesome Larry. Will try this on my Native Mariner 12.5
Let me know how it works out for you.
@@larrywydra Hi Larry, took a few tries but I made one that is a perfect fit. One trick is that once I got the base portion to be a good snug fit, the prop side was a little tight so I just used a half round file to take a little material off the ABS weed guard and now it fits and runs nice and smooth. Thanks got the great concept design.
Cool story!
Thank you for sharing!
