Rocky Road Blues Monroe Break
I learned this from a Mike Compton transcription of Bill Monroe's 1970 version of "The Rocky Road Blues." It's a deceptively simple break: Easy to get the basics, not a lot of melodic up-and-down, but exceedingly difficult to master the triplets and the syncopation at speed.
Learn it slow, practice having a loose but not out-of-control wrist and you'll make progress!

Working on a Building: Key of A
มุมมอง 239หลายเดือนก่อน
My student Andrea is working on this song. The challenge is to play a break within a closed chord position versus doing it all in first position with lots of open strings. There's nothing wrong with either idea but it's best to know how to do both. My break is a synthesis of my own ideas but is heavily based on Bill Monroe-isms. Tab/pdf available on request with the suggestion of showing a litt...
Red River Jig (Vollrath Version) Chord Pattern
มุมมอง 262 หลายเดือนก่อน
I make one or two little mistakes but nothing major and nothing worth redoing the whole thing. The hardest part about this tune for an oldtime/Irish/bluegrass player is the timing: It helps to learn it in phrases as opposed to counting measures. Caveat: This is only one version the mainline version more or less of this tune. There are as many versions as players. The main thing is that the A pa...
Working On A Building Instructional: Bill Monroe intro and 1st Break

There are some great Monroe-isms in this transcription. I can't recall which recording I transcribed. It's been a while. And I of course make one mistake late in the break which I take pains to explain and correct. But it remains a good insight into some of Bill's techniques. Reminder: Except for the triplets, this is all down-strokes.

Two times through slow then medium speed one of the more common bluegrass and oldtime jam tunes. Key of A, fairly straightforward.

For Charlotte Mae :) I thought I'd posted this before but I can't find it. If it winds up being a duplicate well...we'll all survive right?

One of the first tunes I think I ever wrote, it's well over 20 years old. I'd pretty much forgotten it until this morning scrolling through some old files. I blew some dust off it and found I still kinda like it. So it's rusty but I'll make this recording to remind me to get back on top of it.
I'll Fly Away: Bluegrass-y Break in Key of D
มุมมอง 1306 หลายเดือนก่อน
I play and sing a verse of this in the key of D to show where the melody goes. It's no my best singing key for this but you get the idea. Then I play the break a couple times to demonstrate how it fits over the chord structure. This is more of a bluegrass break that touches the melody lightly and then kinda twists and turns through the chords via some bluesy bits and some doublestops. This was ...

I like to play them as soon as I can to see how they work. Also it gives me a chance to ask YOU if I've accidentally written some that's already out there and if I haven't, I'd love your title suggestions!

I LOVE that tune! Fun to listen to and looks like it’s fun to play. I may need to borrow it.
Lovely little tune Fred well done 👌. "Lighting the stove" (title). That's what I was doing when I listened to this😂
Thanks! I like that :)
That is a very beautiful tune!
I really like this! I'm feeling spring on the pond. A row boat and young couple on the pond.
Thanks :) I've had a few lovely comments. My daughter said it sounded sunny and reminded her of sweet corn. Another friend said it reminded her of squirrels jumping around and so...Probably going to go with Squirrels in the Sweet Corn! Sounds very old timey that way lol
I like it!😊
It can be intimidating to play music so out of date with new crowds, this was perfectly done
Thanks!
Congratulations 👍👍👍
Thanks!
Sounds good you can quit your day job
Well done Fred!
Sounds good! 😊
where is sheet music at?
I have it. Vid was made for a student of mine. If you want a pdf, get me your email address :)
Really like this one Fred!
Thank you!
This sounds like 4/4 time, not a waltz.
It is. Typo/brainfart on my part

Aren’t you using your pinky on both the up and down in your demonstration?
I am. The 2 dimensional nature of the vid doesn't show it well but I definitely am :)
In the video you say “You don’t use your pinky on the way up”. No worries.
@@mariontor8139 You know, you're right. But that's just for the first time when you start with the open low G. After that, you have to use the pinky because you have no reliable open string on up to the 10th fret.
I am digging that.😎
Cool we’ll have to jam on this sometime.
Well done Fred! I like it! 😊

nice
I feel the empty space in this song is vital to the song's effect.
This song is nice
this person can sing! Their voice is so amazing!
such a powerful voice!
Great job!
their voice has a lot of power!
😀 I'm getting em!
I love how strong the voice is!
wow!
Thank you youtube for this recommendation. TH-cam finally doing something great. Loved this video 😂❤ oh you put the notes in description awesome!!
Great tune, and great playing! I'm learning it on mandolin, too.
Thanks! I do love those Kentucky fiddle tunes :)
Super cover, j'adore !
Love from France, cool cover ❤
Man, you were flying on these! It sounded good.
Thank you sir :) Under the right circumstance I can do them cleaner and faster (I've been playing these 2 for decades). A couple buddies of mine and I are doing a St. Pat's gig and I've got the most Irish experience so I've been posting these for them to practice with.
@@whistlepigmando sounds fun. I'm still very early in my banjo and mandolin journey, but I'm having fun. Good luck on the gig!

What a great story and song! I like the image of a laundress hobnobbing with bigwigs via a brothel operation. That’s one way to level the playing field, I guess.

Left a like, but the counter stayed at zero? Weird Like the songs, great playing. It's very clear you're enjoying yourself, thanks for entertaining us!
That’s gonna be a fun one
Nice.
This is amazing..!! I only started learning guitar 8 weeks ago & I'm documenting my entire learning journey on here so this was super motivational!
As someone just starting out and looking to Mike's playing for inspiration, it's really nice to see someone actively learning his style without already be a pro. It makes me feel like it is possible for us mere mortals
Thanks, man. Yeah, I always go to Mike when I need to learn. I doubt I'll ever come close to his right hand but I keep plugging away. And while his ability and drive takes him into some amazing places, it really is an approachable and digestible style. It's really just all about keeping the pick on the strings all the time. Good luck to you :)

Bobby was a hero to anyone who ever herad him sing and play. If you happened to have the great fortune to know him he was your friend. If they were to erect a Mt. Rushmore of of singers and I mean ALL singers it would HAVE to include Bobby. Whomever you deem a great singer be it Sinatra, Elvis or Pavarotti Bobby is without question on that level. To all of Bobby's family my sincerest condolences. I have not even addressed the fact that Bobby faught and was wounded in Korea. In addition to receiving a Purple Heart for being wounded in action he was also decorated for his heroism in rescuing several of his brother Marines. Rest easy Chief and thank you for all the laughs and miles.
I actually got to see Bobby play the fiddle at Summersville WV after Sonny retired and Bobby changed to Rocky Top Express. I could tell that he enjoyed playing it!
