best way to learn the map to to play alien, yes gameplay is hard but you gotta learn that the alien is more of an assassin type, you are meant to whittle down their health with spit and gass, and all resources they may have to combat you, it is a war of attrition, and smarts, you will come out on top, never directly confront them, harass via traps, spit, and gas and emp, I would only recommend to confront mercs when you know for a fact all options for protection are unavailable for the time being. The more you play the more you will understand how to become the ultimate predator.
