Can We Install macOS Monterey On This Unsupported '08 MacBook Pro?
In todays video we will be attempting to install macOS Monterey onto my early '08 MacBook Pro. I haven't attempted this to any success in the past but it's been a long time. Will the old and long time unsupported Nvidia hardware stop our success? Let's try out this process together and see how it goes.

Have you revisited this project? I did it on my Blue and white g3. I also got openbsd to work. I ordered a pci r7000 64meg card with dvi, s-video, and vga card. it won't boot into macOS with it (I think I screwed up a prior r7000 trying to flash it within osx to mac rom, so I found another one on ebay and am not going to try. I do have a r7000 32mb card in the machine now, which was flashed successfully years ago so I can have 2 video cards, one to run macos/osx, and one for openbsd and hopefully Adelie 1.0 b5. The Live CD didn't seem to recognize it, but when I booted it with the 32meg card that worked fine. I had hoped that I could just have both cards in, boot and just swap over to the dvi card but I think because it didn't load drivers during live-cd temp install, it didn't see it. Regardless, I'll keep messing with it. if it doesn't work I'll just relegate the 64meg card for when it's booted into openbsd.

If you want to know fun, try installing Debian SID on a beige G3. Mine has been upgraded to SSD, G4 upgrade, and Radeon Mac Edition. Yeah it is slow, but able to use LXDE as desktop, and Netsurf to browse the net some. I also have an iMac G5 and Debian SID 64-bit works ok. That is setup with Mate, and Arctic Fox is still quite slow on it.

So I'm in a similar situation on a different device where the CPU is 64 bit and the bios is locked at 32 bit EFI. What did you specifically do to get the 64 bit bootable? Convert the HDD/SSD to MBR? I always run into trouble with the BIOS looking for 32 bit EFI and not finding it.

Hey so will installing linux allow me to use the full 4gb of ram? I have a weird hybrid 06 mac mini that someone had upgraded previously with a core 2 duo 5600 and a 160gb hdd. I have installed a broadcom crystal HD card so I can set it up as a headless plex server. It was previously used as my minecraft server. I would like to install a better cpu for a bit better power, but I have scrapped the DVD drive out of it and I would like to upgrade it to an SSD or even take out the HDD and just install it on a Flash drive, although IDK if it will boot like that. I really appreciate a more modern video on these as I have had mine sitting around for probably almost 10 years.

I haven't messed with the machine lately but I am under the impression that you may need to wait until the RC3 release (supposedly very soon) for this to work. I have seen mention that RC2 support has ended even though it is the only option they offer for ppc currently. I managed to find some potentially helpful information in a post on macrumors below, I know it is for a G5 but it seems it may be of use. forums.macrumors.com/threads/new-installs-of-adelie-linux-rc2-and-below-are-now-broken.2371012/post-31874121 "forums.macrumors.com/members/powerpcfan.1305336/ "git.adelielinux.org/-/snippets/12 for Manual Installation instructions git.adelielinux.org/-/snippets/130 for a little more detail but the auto installer does not work for a G5. I ve seen many variances in video response, depending on the linux versions and brandnames running in the same machine, say intel for example Mint and RedHat. I assume the release of ppc may be done using the most less demanding graphic card and video optimization is not existent, you have to find the right video drivers for ATI that I believe is the default video Card the G5 was sold as default. as you described the PPC releases are mostly abandoned so if you want to use better graphics the driver must be recompiled for this machine. I feel you can have the same performance between a Raspberry Pi and this machine. it is just a nostalgia issue other than that is useless for 2022.
