Used to drive through there in the late 70s and eighties. Now retired in Ontario it was on my bucket list to go back on my sport bike and enjoy the thrill of the corners without guardrails and very narrow shoulders. I finally made it there 3 years ago, and although it was a lovely bike ride the new layout of the road is not quite as exciting as it used to be.
I have been driving this road for 13 years usually 120-130 km /hr Highway 97 in Bc is much more dangerous with only 2 lanes and big trucks
Wait 'til winter LOL
Beautiful stretch of road there. The engineering of those mountain roads is no joke!
This is not a bad road like the other guy said I to drove it for years even when it was 2lane only thing bad about it was the dummies that had no brains out there same as. Hurling Island just to much speed I’m retired now but still drive these roads an I never have any problems
I miss this old section..old school highway feeling. Certainly better for long term.
Dangerous??....Should have seen it years ago. This is tame
That particular spot at the 6 min mark was quite the "joyful driving" spot. Have you driven that particular section lately, given that the twinning project in that stretch along the canyon has been finished? Thank you for sharing this.
Just follow the speed limit, and it is fine...
Great to see this! A Highway I regularly drove From '69 forward ..Thanks
When were the concrete barriers put up? I don't remember these being up at all when I last took a trip up to BC in 2015.
When they had the chain link up against the wall, I had a rock come right through the roof of my SUV, couldn’t stop blizzard conditions, stopped in Golden at the Petro Can, bought duct tape covered the hole until I got home to Airdrie 4 days later,
Could use a little music, or commentary. Otherwise interesting.
I don’t see the issues at the 6 minute mark. I don’t see any really it’s a construction zone. Drive accordingly. Good thing you’re not driving the Logan pass on the cliff side. Nailbitter?! lol. No it’s a wonderful drive.
Everyone in my family has driven from Toronto to Vancouver my dad did it my mom did it my sister did it both my brothers did and I also did it it’s a tradition in my family
Oh yes, good old Highway # 1, goes across Canada from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. Now imagine it with snow, rock slides, mud slides, drunken drivers, bad drivers, drug addicts and truck drivers on Bennies, due to their scheduling.
Love these winter rides. I've lived in BC all my life but travelled very little in the winter. Nice change.
Brilliant !!! Go'in down the road and taking in the scenery of this great and vast land with someone else doing the driving !!! Can't beat that ! Thank you and keep up the good, safe work ! 😊😊😊
We did that hill back in '67 when my family & I moved from Toronto to Vancouver with all our family possessions in a trailer. It seemed a lot hairier back then. Just sayin. :)
who are the people who think this road is dangerous?
This road has vastly improved from just 2 lanes to 4 lanes. The road itself is safe. The drivers ... are another thing. Been using it for 50+ years. My brother was one of the ones who worked on this road.
If you think that this road is unsafe you must have missed out on driving it before they built this new section of the highway. It use to wind down the hill to the river with a 90 degree corner across the narrow bridge to another 90 degree corner and up the hill on the other side. By the way these hills I’m talking about are really cliffs. This is a beautiful highway that you are blessed to be driving on. Thank you BC highways for finally building this much needed stretch of highway number 1.
This highway is a walk in the park. You should've drove it 30 years ago. Actually, you wouldn't have been able to, because I've seen more trucks over the cliff. Upside down on the highway every single day and now the road is straight 4 lane, just about all the way from Calgary to Vancouver. And there's more accidents now than ever before, because of no experience. No english period
Heart beats faster just watching this, scares the crap out of me in real life!
It’s a vacation driving it now compared to pre 2007. It was at the bottom of the canyon then
looks like it could be a little sketchy at times winter or nighttime
The old saying is you can always go done the hill too many too slow but you can only do it too fast, That was a very good driving, driver to bad not all truckers drove like you! I drove this route for years pulling super B bottles hauling propane and butane. I was always took my time just as you did! The old say “ you can
kinda nice to see the three sisters let me tell you
I could walk faster than this.
What a waste of time this was . Nothing dangerous there at all. Have you ever driven the highways in southern Mexico !!??
Been back and forth a good many times when I was canyon distributors! Before the coke was done, that was just two way highway back in the 80s and the only way was through the canyon at that time! Never had any problems and just loved it! New eara these days so sad!😔
Been 20 years since I drove through there. Thanks for the video and the memory!
Ah yes ,been there done that, thanks for the memories ❤❤
Sort of reminds me of the West Virginia Turnpike when they were building it.
It looks so dangerous, got nausea, just travelling with you,and very scary😂😂🤪
It's not a bad road if you drive the way you should & be mindful of where you are😮
Thats beautyful 🎉
Try it from San Bernardino north ! The great hiway 1 north is falling in the ocean faster than they can fix it ! 😅
Pulled super b trains over that road more times than i can count
In May 2024, exactly at 704, that rectangle arrow sign, there was a flagman. I was up front, and waited for about 10 minutes before the sign turned. Got to look around at the beauty. Ive been ocean to ocean within one year in Canada and this route you show [near Golden] in the vid, is right at the top of scenic routes in all of Canada. Right beside this would be Hwy17 from Sault Ste Marie to Nipigon Ontario. That too, running beside lake superior for 500+kms is unreal.
I look forward to soon driving this route , hopefully on many occasions being so short .
When no barriers were there !!!!! Those days in winter lol woohoo ! Todays drivers should be given winter lessons and testing ! Wow
British Columbia Has the most Challenges when it comes to road construction in all of Canada and likely North America these men women and engineers that build these hiways need to get a huge applause for doing the fine job they do !!!!!
I drove this route a few years ago at 2 in the morning in July. I ran into a huge snowstorm near the peak and couldn't see a damn thing due to very large snowflakes causing a blinding reflection from my headlights. No guardrails and about 1500 feet to the valley on my right. I didn't want to stop in fear of someone coming up from behind so I moved over to the left lane because I could see the rise of the mountain on my left. My lights reflected off the mountain as I drove with one eye on the mountain and one eye trying to see ahead. It was a scary 20-30 minutes but I knew as I descended toward Merritt the temperature would increase and the snow turn to rain. That's exactly what happened and I made it to Merritt without incident. A scary night in July!
Trans-Canada highways beauty peaks between Golden to Banff, as have driven 6-8 times, but it never stops to amaze me how they bilt it back in 1958.
Looks like you are a conscientous and sensible driver. 👍
The road is not dangerous drivers are!
gas only 1.46 a liter
Lota people I have seen do not realize how long these hills are and to always have respect for trucks. That's how we get food lumber, parts on time, it's because of folks like u thanks man. Be safe
Fun hill
