    I used to be known by my English name Richard Hardd but now I prefer the Welsh version you're referring to. Ro'n i'n arfer cael fy ngalw wrth fy enw Saesneg "Dic Hardd", ond nawr mae'n well gen i ddefnyddio'r fersiwn Cymraeg o fy enw.

    As a very passionate English rugby fan and someone who has lived on the border all their life, I’ve got to say (through gritted teeth) that this is the best and most stirring national anthem ever, especially when it’s sung like this. Just takes your breath away. Looking forward to the game this weekend; may the best team win

    Top national anthem, I’m a third generation Australian with a welsh speaking grandfather , whose parents were married in 1861 at Ystradgynlais (which I can’t pronounce) . My great grand parents ended up in Ballarat and generation wise we all played AFL football not rugby which only Australians would understand

    I just wish the USA had a stirring national anthem like "America The Beautiful," instead of the militaristic cloth-worshipping garbage in the "Star Spangled Banner." Pledge Allegiance to a piece of cloth? NEVER! Feel patriotic about "O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain, For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain!" Hell yeah! Now THAT is an anthem, unlike "rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air . . . . ." What BS is that? We all know by now that ICELAND beat England 2-1 in the Round of 16, and that Wales is in the Quarter Finals. All good Brits are celebrating their proxy Welshness at this point in time. What a fairy tale it would be if Wales WON the EURO? I doubt it but we can hope eh? Listening to this song for the umpteenth time the past couple weeks . . . . nostalgic for my youth I suppose.

    • @DippKlippGuy
      @DippKlippGuy 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Star Spangled Banner is more about how the nation endured against an actual war with the vastly superior British military; taking place during a chaotic battle, where despite that, the flag was kept waving tall. A particularly important feat given at the time, if the standard of an army were to fall, morale would plummet. The pledge was intended as a, well, pledge to ensure that we would never let nightmare that was the American Civil War would ever happen again, a nation divided, or to allow liberties to be sacrificed and justice to be withheld.

    • @floridalimey1
      @floridalimey1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you've got your wars confused. The War Of 1812 against the British was when Francis Scott Key penned that warmongering screed in 1814. The American Civil War was half a century in the future. Of course the colonial rebels took advantage of Britain being engaged in a World War with France to try to invade Canada, but that was rebuffed and Washington DC razed in reply. The bombardment of Baltimore, with Key being a guest (not prisoner) on a British ship in the harbor during the fight, inspired the poem sung to an old pub tune popular among the upper crust of British society, i.e. "To Anacreon In Heaven." Now personally I find the American Declaration Of Independence to be a wonderful document. But even that document was written by Brits! A little known "fact": the War Of Independence ended with Britain agreeing to a near 200 year lease on these colonies, similar to our agreement over Hong Kong. That lease ended in 1976, and us Brits are here in America to reclaim sovereignty! (Yes that is a joke.) My issue with the "Star Spangled Banner" is that it inspires militarism and cloth worship. Give me "America The Beautiful" instead, and I would happily sing along, even as an atheist! :)

    • @DippKlippGuy
      @DippKlippGuy 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      floridalimey1 I specifically said the pledge was a reflection to the civil war. As for the War of 1812, it kicked off due to both the British and French commandeering/hijacking American merchant ships.

    • @floridalimey1
      @floridalimey1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The USA invaded Canada due to both Britain and France commandeering ships? So they chose sides with the French and did their bidding despite France taking US ships as well? Nah, the Americans took advantage of the war against Napoleon in Europe, trying to dislodge the Brits from the rest of the continent by invading Canada. It was the early rumblings of the concept of "Manifest Destiny," which resulted in the later USA genocide against native Americans and expansion to the Pacific. Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE this country. But the USA certainly is not blameless or innocent in its dealings with other nationalities in this hemisphere. Britain has her guilt too in its dealings with the world and I am no apologist. But let us not twist history into jingoistic claims or excuses. Not saying you are . . . . . The Star Spangled Banner became the USA national anthem in 1931 by congressional resolution. It was sung by Union soldiers as a patriotic ditty in the Civil War, similar to "Dixie" in the confederacy, and gained further support in the decades afterwards. However, In my opinion they should have chosen a more uplifting and satisfying ode to the beauty of this country. It certainly does not fit into the category of "great national anthems" like the Welsh anthem does. Let's not argue, let us enjoy another round of "Land Of My Fathers." :)

    Wales NEARLY beat England today in the EURO 2016 group stage. Heard the Welsh fans singing this, and remembered my Welsh step-grandad (an old coal miner with missing toes,) singing this with his beautiful voice back in the early 60s. Wales did not beat England today, and in fact never beat England at soccer or anything else except rugby on occasion. But with fondness and respect to our Welsh brothers in the UK, well done today! And I love the Welsh national Anthem. Cyrmu Am Byth

      at rugby on occasion?...you'll find England are only three wins in front of us in the history of both nations playing each other. and England are the richest Rugby union in the World. not bad for such a little nation of only 3 million people.

      ***** well, that's to be expect after hundreds of years of theft. Where would London be without all that Welsh Coal, Slate and Gold. None of it was reinvested back into Wales. As a matter of fact, where would Wales be if they hadn't stole. At one stage, Cardiff and Newport were the busiest ports in the World. Why do people just quote facts about the present, yet ignore the causes.

    • @floridalimey1
      @floridalimey1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blame the Italians for that! Was Rome who committed genocide against the Druids, and subjugated both English and Welsh. Might have been two thousand years ago, but still echoes today. The Romans invested little of the riches made from Britannia back into the country. Blame the Vikings for that! Was either Danes, Norwegians, or Normans (Norsemen who claimed part of France as their own,) who invaded one millennia ago and subjugated both English and Welsh to their rule. Oh and also blame LONDON for that. London thinks it still rules the world, but the hinterlands of England often bear the same grudges towards London as do some Welsh, half the Scots, and most Irish. Your complaints about Cardiff and Newport could be said about Liverpool and Bristol, and my birthtown of Coventry. But blaming London for the inevitable globalization and robotization of industry, and the need to get away from coal and oil and all fossil fuels - to save our planet -- is a heavy burden to place on London alone. Let us not argue about that which divides us. Let us celebrate WALES' performance in Euro2016 rather than mourn for England's miserable performance YET AGAIN!! And while we do that, let us listen once again to this marvelous anthem!! :)
