SV Sienna - The journey of a Shark 24
Switzerland
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 21 มี.ค. 2021
This is the journey of me and my 10$ shark 24 named Sienna. We‘re getting ready to cross the atlantic.
Hi there, my name is Jelmer
I‘ve set a 7 year goal to get myself and the boat ready to leave from Europe to Rio de Janeiro single handed.
Will we make it? How will we get there?
Sienna was bought in an online auction for only 10 swiss francs (equivalent of 10 dollars).
I have little sailing experience and a passion for (DIY) building things.
Challenge accepted!!!

Adding Ballast The DIY Keel Upgrade for Ocean Readiness
Boat Stability Upgrade: Crafting Sienna the small Shark 24 Sailboat's Custom Ballast for Ocean Sailing!!
In this video, I’m working on an upgrade to improve the seaworthiness of my sailboat, Sienna. I’ll take you step-by-step through the process of adding ballast to her bolt-on keel, aiming to lower the center of gravity and make her more stable in rough seas. You’ll see how I create a positive plug, prepare the mold, and dive into the physics behind why ballast is crucial for stability.
Along the way, I’ll look into key concepts like the capsize screening formula (CSF), the relationship between the center of gravity and buoyancy, and how these factors impact a sailboat’s ability to stay upright in challenging conditions. This project has been a learning experience, and I’m excited to share my insights with you-whether you’re new to sailing and DIY crafting or experienced on the water or in the workshop!
Stick around if you’re interested in following along as I tackle this challenging project.

Point of No Return: Stripping Sienna the Shark24 to Her Bare Hull
มุมมอง 27214 วันที่ผ่านมา
Cutting out fiberglass parts, revealing plans and inspiration! Today, I’m taking the first major step in transforming my Shark 24 sailboat, Sienna, into a vessel capable of tackling the toughest of ocean conditions. In this video, I strip her down to the bare hull - no turning back now! ⚓ The ultimate goal? To complete a solo Atlantic crossing by 2030, just in time for my 50th birthday. While t...

Building the mobile Shed
มุมมอง 120หลายเดือนก่อน
Join me as I build a mobile shed for my Shark 24 named Sienna and her trailer! In this video, I take you through the construction process, which is based on a design I created in Fusion 360 (not shown in the video). The shed's mobility is ensured by eight swivel wheels-similar to those used on flight cases in the event industry-capable of handling a load of 200 kg each. You'll also see me prepa...
Getting Sienna the Shark 24
มุมมอง 634หลายเดือนก่อน
This is the start of the adventure. We went to get the boat, we auctioned for 10 swiss francs, a bit less then 10 dollars. A personal memoire to future me, and for people to follow if they're interested. In this video, Sienna and her trailer find their place on the yard, where I can work on her. We find out what we actually bought and man, there's a lot of boat and a lot of stuff for these 10 F...
Have fun. I rebuilt one of the first sharks ever built, sail # 43. It was a crazy commitment, but a lot of fun and a great learning experience. Good luck and have fun. I am going to follow your videos going forward.
Shall we do the 2026 jester challenge together?
Yus, another episode. 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Cool project! Thanks for the mention. You can definitely realize your dream in that boat. It sounds like you have a good plan how to get her prepared.
@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat Thank you, I first thought to build a boat from scratch, but then I found Sienna, having a great hull to start of from. But, it‘s still a long way to go and many mountains to climb in DIY country 😅
Amazing goal for an ocean crossing! Looking forward to see how it goes! I’ve reinforced mine as well, though not as much as much as yours will be.
Yes, a long way to go, but we’re committed to our Sharks and bit by bit we‘ll get there. I‘m looking forward to your progress as well 👍🏻
Cool stuff mate we are on similar journeys. 🥳
@@SAILBOATJACARANDA Thanks mate! Yes, it seems we are 😁
Hi, do you know a bit of the history of this boat? I took my first sailing lessons on a Shark 24 in Steckborn.
I sadly do not know much, but yes, she‘s been used for sailing lessons and rental in Steckborn. So chances are good you‘ve actually sailed her! Do you remember when you had your lessons?
It must have been about 22 or 23 years ago. I remember it was a great sailing boat and the sailing instructor (Peter Musil - Pit’s Segelschule) always said it was a very capable boat!!
@@oliverosswald4983 Man! What are the odds, me putting up my first YT video and 2 days later you who sailed her 22 years ago find it!!! Yes, this was his boat. His name is on the old registration 🙃
Dear Shark owners who might land on my video, I have a question: There is a very short shot of the keel bolts which in my case are (or I should say were) covered in fiberglass. Is this standard? It‘s visible there is rust on the plates holding the keel. And I suspect it was done at a later stage.
Usually the bolts and nuts are accessible. As there is rust under the glass, there will be moisture. Awesome channel!!
@@sharkfixation thank you, I allready thought so it wasn‘t originally like this.
Cool stuff bud.
Thx 👍🏻
