    I really like your calm and realistic approach to PPG. After a couple of years of wanting to take up the sport this year I am determined to at least sign up for training to see if it is something I can achieve even at my advanced age of 66 years. Your music choice was also good and not annoying like many of the YT options chosen by others! Thanks for posting.

    Those who went thru training and obtained a gear are devided into 2 groups: those who fly frequently and those who don't (for various reasons). Occasionally the 2-nd group decides they need to justify the effort and the gear go out and fly. My understanding about the 2-nd group: if you fly less than - say - 40 hours a year ("weekend pilot"), this hobby is not very much worth for you. It becomes pretty dangerous as you don't get enough sustained practice and your gear is suffering from aging problems and probably is not maintained often enough (because you think you don't use something it doesn't mean the maintenance is not necessary!). I personally fly for 20+ years and manage to do about 60 hours a year - this IMHO is close to the minimum required for this hobby to be "viable" and safe. Also I have a trike, which I fly even less frequently (better to say: never). It is very challenging and dangerous to fly because of what I said. I know quite a few people who basically don't fly anymore, but keep their gear so that "one day" they would fly. In the cases they indeed try, it usually ends up in a disaster of some sort and severity... No offence, please, for this piece of my advice: either fly at least 50+ hours a year or just get you another hobby - there are many out there - and sell out this one.

    • @rich_vincent
      @rich_vincent ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment and due to weather and work I came to the decision to sell my gear. I agree that you need to get out and fly to remain safe. I will come back to this sport as I loved it, when I do, I'll get some refresher training and commit to fly regularly.

    Flying low over water and far from shore in a gyro definitely isn't clever. If the engine quits and the gyro drops into water, the chances of escape are far worse than in an aeroplane. Even getting the canopy door open against water pressure while sinking rapidly is almost impossible until the cabin fills. Occupants need to be good at holding breath while swimming upwards.

    • @rich_vincent
      @rich_vincent 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely agree, however, we weren’t actually that far from shore and the water was shallow as the tide was out.

    Been a long road for me too. Those that I know so far who fly don’t fly often. So after training I was terrified to fly alone. Then knee issues, then covid, also bought a trike because of knee issues. Flew a few times with friends but not enough. But I’m now resolved to fly alone as necessary . Been flying 2 or 3 times a week in recent times. So now I’m finally getting somewhere and a great return on my investment.

    Tell me about it. 20% joy if you're lucky. 80% a pain in the ass usually. My favorite scenario? Unpacking everything from the car, dragging all of it to a set up point, getting it all laid out (multiple times because of wind), running the motor, strapping in, cranking the motor, it decides it's not going to crank, undoing everything, work on motor, reset canopy & lines that just got blown away for the 45th time, get suited up again, reach up, pull the starter rope, it don't crank (again), redo...No. Don't redo anything. Go the hell home. That's the reality. It's a sport you truly have to love! Especially if you just adore getting ripped for nearly $4,000 for instruction & subjecting yourself to all the above. It helps if you're already insane. If not, you will be.

    Did you get permission to land there? Best option is to never ask for permission because otherwise they might say no. As long as you take off and land from quiet public footpath that's not very busy then you should be good. It's also a good idea to never buzz around or do low passes too often on your landing or taking off spot, that way it reduces the chance of someone having an issue with it and hence getting fined or banned. The low passes and tree skimmers should be done in a remote quiet place that is different to you landing / take off spot for the same reasons.
