Great video, how do you check the SWR of this so it doesn't burn out the power transistors?
You could disconnect the antenna feed closest to the radio and connect into an SWR meter to test.
How high do you set the RX output level to drive the mic in of the TX for proper deviation?
I started with the volume level mid way and started testing transmit and receive to ensure proper functionality. If the volume is set to high, Vox performance is impacted.
@theoilykrafter thanks, I settled on about %75 last night.
I have problems with other frequencies in this walkie talkie, like 434.500 no reception and I can't talk to other walkie talkies either. does anyone have an idea? I use Baofeng BF-888S v1.05 Programming Software
It is possible that an offset or PL Tone is set on one radio and not the other. Use CHIRP and the programming cable to read from the radio and check for those settings.
Thanks man. I just picked up mine after over a year and was having the same issue. I couldn't figure it out
Thank you for watching. You are welcome. I will be working on a video just like this for the AnyTone 578 radio as well.
Printed 2 sets, works well, alas the lid of the dessicent box is loose and will leak out if tipped /banged around putting on shelf. I solved by using an elastic band to keep the lid tight.
Thank you for watching. Thanks for the tip.
I've been checking out different dry boxes on TH-cam and I like this design the best. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching. We appreciate the comments.
Don’t waste your time people! 😂
I felt the topic would be useful for some folks.
better question do we need to support this ?
I am guessing you are asking if you need to allow supports. I went back and checked my BambuLab slicer for the models that I used in this video and it does not require supports.
@theoilykrafter i needed them for the bracket that holds the derometer it's the file that says more flow. The cube doesn't have walls just braces around the cube
@theoilykrafter but it worked amazing thank you so much
is there a reason there not allowing me to drop in orca slicer like most files I'm still new to all this so it may be me lol
Thank you for watching our video. You should be able to import an .STL file into the Orca Slicer with no issues.
Love the “Show stopper!”
Thank you.
can you do this with just one GD-88?
Thank you for watching. I reviewed the Extendad Manual for the GD-88 and it does mention cross band repeater function. Meaning you can set receive on VHF and transmit on UHF or vice versa.
When riveting through soft materials you need to a washer, in this case on the inside of the box, or the tip of the rivet. Then it will snap off the pin once the rivet can not expand any more due to the washers.
Thank you for the feedback! That is a good tip.
Thank you very much for this outstanding instruction. Followed your directions, update was perfect. Great job!
Thank you for watching our video. We are glad that you enjoyed the countent and I am very happy to hear that it helped you. Thank you for the compliment.
The first thing I do to any new radio is turn off the beep and the voice. I can read so I don't need that horrible voice talking every time I go into the menu. Thank you for the demo of how to set this up. I have been thinking about making an emergency repeter in a pelican case with external antenna mounts like you did, and a connection to hook a solar panel to it. But I have HTs that are capable of being a stand alone repeter. But I'm thinking 2 cheap baofenge is the ticket for this project. I would worry about the duty cycle burning out a single HT. Afraid I'll burn it out. The duty cycle on the bf should be lower also if something happens it is just a $25 radio not a $300. After writing this out ill be going the baofeng option. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching. You are welcome. Good luck on your project.
License 😂😂😂😂
Thank you for watching. Yes you need a license to operate this portable repeater.
My Bridgecomm Hotspot was stuck on "initializing" today. I was able to recover the hotspot with your instructions in less than 10 minutes. I have one issue and maybe you can help me fix it. I have no audio when invoking TG 4000 (BM) using Anyone 878UV. The TG does disconnect from other TG's but no audio saying "Not Linked" Any suggestions?
Thank you for the feedback. I am glad that it was helpful. With regards to no audio saying Not Linked. Check your talkgroups specifically the one for Talkgroup Disconnect 4000. Is it set to Private Call, Group Call, or All Call ? I have found that All Call works best for me.
@@theoilykrafter I was able to correct my issue. When I invoke TG 4000 the return audio was going to TG 9. I was able to change the following , DMR gateway--> DMR Network 1 --> SrcRewrite0 --> changed from 2,4000,2,9,1001 to 2,4000,2,4000,1001 --> Apply Changes. It worked after that. That you again for sharing !!!!
Easy to follow. Programmed my radio flawlessly. Thanks, man!
Thank you for watching our video! We are happy that it helped you!
Outstanding video. Thank you for posting.
Thank you for watching and subscribing to our TH-cam channel.
I am trying to just do Packet, and at 3:51 you are showing VARA and where I live we only have packet. I don't see anything in Winlink Express that looks like what you have. (that sound card)
Sorry about the delayed response, TH-cam has been having trouble providing notifications about comments that have been posted to our TH-cam channel. I have reported it to them. In Winlink Express in the top menu bar, you will see Open Session and then there is a drop down selection that you can pick. In my case I picked Vara FM Winlink. Once that is selected you can click on Open Session. The screen that is being displayed is under the Settings menu in Vara FM then select Soundcard.
How did you overcome the common ground issue? When both radio's have a common ground, through the charger when it is hooked up, the transmitter will allways transmit. PTT button, or in this case the charger, connects mic ground to speaker ground.
i did not experience this issue with the build that I did.
How did you waterproof the charger USB connections?
You could seal the connection with silicone seal, but that would keep you from unplugging the cables unless you remove the silicone.
@@theoilykrafter But, you made so sure that everything else was waterproofed but the obvious one on the OUTSIDE of the case was unprotected. Didn’t make sense.
@@levinef Thank you for your feedback.
@@levinef That's what I came here to ask too.
Great video.
Thank you for watching our video and providing feedback.
Did you leave repeater radios in frequency mode, as opposed to channel mode, and does it even matter
You can do either. It doesn't affect the functionality. Personally, I like to store the frequencies in memory, that way if something happens and it completely looses power you don't have to re-enter the settings.
My experience with those little solar panel battery banks is that the solar panel is undersized. It takes about a week in bright Florida sunlight for the power bank to go from 20% to full. A little 10 watt panel is a substantial improvement. A 25 watt panel is more of a beefy solution for this application. You will need a controller with the external solar panel. Sometimes that is included with the small panels. Sometimes it is not. Thanks for posting.
Thank you for watching the video and providing feedback. I agree that bigger is applicable. My goal was to make it as compact and portable as possible.
I totally understand and it’s definitely educational. I enjoyed your video. I was just wondering if I was missing something. I am actually in the process of putting one together myself.
Thank you for the question. We do have a Part 2 for this video that covers the radio programming. Hopefully that helps.
I don’t understand shy you reverse polarity of the crossover cable? It’s functionally a crossover by connecting between speaker and mike.
Thank you for your question. The transmit or output of one radio needs to be routed to the input or microphone on the second radio and vice versa.
Thank you for the great detailed video!
You are welcome! Thank you for watching our video.
So my question is why two radios why not just purchase a small repeater like a sure com repeater this way it’s all plug-and-play and a lot less wires no need for crossover wire, and then you would only need one antenna or am I missing something but I will say I definitely enjoyed the video and it was very detailed which I appreciate thank you sir
Sorry for the late reply. We didn't receive any notification that we had a comment that needed a response. You could definitely do that. My goal was to see what was needed in order to build one potentially with only parts that I already had on hand.
Thank you for another great video.
Thank you for watching our video!
Tip.......put washers under the back side of your rivits when fastening to plastic.
Thank you for your feedback.
That solar power bank will NEVER power that repeater. Ask me how I know. I tried the same idea with a meshtastic setup. With a 10ma draw, in the blazing Florida summer sun, the battery bank was empty in three days. Those solar battery banks are a joke. I updated with a 12" 5v solar panel charging a 8000mah 1s RC car battery. This setup actually worked.
Thank you for your feedback.
Hi, I tried to program various 888s radios but after writing, the radio remains with the channel open and the green LED on... I also tried using the boafeng application... it's always the same
I have programmed literally 100s of the Baofeng 888s radios without any problems. Reminder to always read from the radio first into Chirp and save a copy, and then copy and paste the channels into Chirp you wish into what you read from the radio and write it to the radio. Don't forget to save the new program. this will prevent you from having issues with potentially different firmware revisions between radios.
@@theoilykrafter thank. yes, I believe you. until 2022 I was able to copy all the 888s, even with the boafeng program... but after that they always remain with the green LED and open channel and when I read the frequencies they are the same as the original source. Can I send you a video to help you understand the problem with my radios after programming? I thank you
@@theoilykrafter this is my problem whit all 888s - th-cam.com/video/cB0c9IXF8Ks/w-d-xo.html
I have some Baofeng 5RM’s 4 have the same version 14 and 2 have version 11. Can I transfer version 14 data to the two version 11’s? Also, is one version blocked? Which is better? Or should I go to Baofeng Website and upgrade the 11’s to version 14 or whichever version is the latest? HELP😮😮😮
Thank you for watching. You should be able to use Chirp to export your channel programs and then import them into a blank tab in Chirp for your other Baofeng model. I would suggest always starting with reading from your radio. Save that to a file. Then importing the channel program into Chirp then write to the 2nd radio. Don't forget to save the radio program under a different file name.
Hi, thank you for a great build, I note the file link does not work. Thank you anyway.
@Sgtoscarcolon 4 hours ago Hi, excellent and very well explained. Very useful detailed video. Thanks!!! What were the HT settings? Squelch off/on?
Sorry somehow the original comment got deleted. Here is the answer I tried to post when TH-cam accidentally deleted the comment and support was unable to retrieve it. @theoilykrafter 1 minute ago Thank you. I recommend setting the squelch level to 0 unless you have a lot of noise. If you have a lot of noise try it set to 1 but no higher. The only other radio settings were the frequency. That will be determined by the Winlink gateway that you are attempting to connect to. In my case it was 145.030 simplex with no offset or PL Tone. The volume knob setting on the radio will be determine during your tuning setup. As you saw in the video you have to play with the volume knob settings as it has an effect on the Drive Level, S/Noise, and VU.
I need some clarification. Help me understand. Why do you need to program any transmit settings in the Receive Radio, as it never transmits, and vice versa on the Transmit Radio?
Thank you for your question\feedback. I tend to put both sets of settings in the radios to be thorough.
Two walkie talkies is not a repeater or at least not a good one
Thanks for your feedback. This was a project to see if it would work. I am no way recommending using two handhelds as a critical purpose repeater. This would be for an emegency situation and you didn't have a commerical repeater available.
Please keep quiet
Did you have a question ?
please try to use power supply if working good thank you sir
Thank you for watching.
You did a great job that was a so useful video

Thank you for watching. We are glad to help.
Way back in the late 80's and early 90's my Ham buddies built and operated half a dozen "Repeaters". We NEVER had to use cheap "toys" from Communist China. And a few of these "Genuine" Repeaters are still going strong! Even after a full third of a Century of hard, daily use.
Thank you for watching the video. This is meant to be a temporary scenario repeater. Like a camping weekend or something simlar.

Hi - How do you set the channel spacing?
Use a Windows computer, running Chirp, and a programming cable.

Great video. What did you program in the channel freq, is the 145.030 one that you use the most?
Thank you. Most of the VHF Winlink nodes in my area use 145.030. That is why I programmed it into my radio. I could have also just used VFO mode since it does not use an offset or a PL Tone.
Thank you for sharing this video.
You are welcome.

Little 20w duplexer
Thank you for your feedback.
I tried the 720 second and the image came out way too dark. Like it was burnt. Any suggestions
Thank you for watching our video! I'm not sure why it turned out dark. I'd suggest checking the program color profile with the ink you are using. You should be able to get the color profile for your printer from the company you got your ink from to make sure that they match. I have found that not all the programs support the color profiles needed for sublimation right off the bat, you have to change them.
Thanks so much… I would have loved to have seen in the video the CAT control actually controlling the radio. It seems you showed both cables working but not the advantage of one cable over the other. But thank you for taking the time to verify settings. I have the exact setup and just got it working - of course the day BEFORE I watched this video. But this will allow me to go back in and double check my settings. Thnx!!! W5HIM
You are welcome. I had several things I was trying to display at the same time. I like the one with CAT control so I do not have to change any settings on the actual radio. Only unplug the microphone and plug in the Digirig cable.
@@theoilykrafter So does CAT on the 578 only control PTT? Does it change the radio frequency? I am very new at Winlink and my only radio experience is on a 578 and 878.
It does trigger PTT. I will have to test to see if it will change the frequency. I will be starting testing for the AnyTone 878 and Winlink.
