Sorry about the audio in this video. Video recording brought to you by Screencast-O-Matic.com After painful hours of dying, I figured out a sequence in the fight. Eryi-1. Hide 2. Magic 3. Hide 4. Civilian here, so take this with a grain of salt. These cadets are just kids. Not recruits in basic training. For a seasoned E-8 to shred a kid for making an honest mistake(?) when presenting his weapon under orders would be uprofessional at best, and bullying at worst. With that said, he is an E-8, and a Marine. He has a reputation to uphold, and that reputation is the living embodiment of the "Fear of God" when reviewing junior cadets. The E-8 handled this perfectly, in my estimation. That slow return of the head to eyes front must have been terrifying enough to that hapless lad to teach the lesson.

The tittle of this meme is intentionally misleading! The First Sargent' HAT is bumped by the soldier doing what he was ordered to do!! The First Sargent was clearly standing too close!

My uncle was standing for an inspection in mud during WW2. He dropped his hands to the position of attention when the general moved to take his rifle. The rifle hung there in midair for a pregnant second. Then it splashed down in the mud. The senior moved and the junior did as he was taught. Uncle got to point at the dirt on his rifle as the general cleaned it.

ROTC college level training. The recruit did not intentionally strike the First Sargent who was properly handling the rifle during inspection. The First Sargent should have stepped back to allow the student to return to formation. The young man did everything by the book as witnessed by the Master Sargent.

I got punched in the stomach by a drunk TI/DI in USAF basic training in 1972. A big no no. He hit me so hard my knees buckled. He wasn't even my TI but from another flight. It was 0530 I was out of step but he was slurring his words drunk. I could of had his job but my TIs asked me to let it go so I did. It was the end of basic training but I had it made the rest of the way. lol

1st Sgt knows that the fear that cadet feels is sweeter than just about anything. He basks in the knowledge that, while terrified of the 1st Sgt, this cadet kept his bearing and will make his fellow Marines proud when it counts. Devil Dogs are well-deserving their reputations. A long and proud lineage. I spent my life as an Airforce brat. My pops can sit in a chair and drink coffee / eat bagels better than any other man in the Air Force. P.S. - Don't tell him I said that - He's almost 70, but I'm pretty sure he can still kick my ass, lol.

Back at Benning in '91 about 4 days into basic training, I was describing the size of targets on the range to one of my fellow recruits. As I spread my arms apart to indicate this, a short drill sergeant walked up behind me and I accidentally backhanded him in the face, knocking his glasses off. He dropped me into the push-up position but was so mad he immediately took me to my drill sergeant and told him to make sure I "come see him later", so he could kill me. I stressed it all day, and even asked my drill sergeant about it that evening, and he said "don't worry about it". I was relieved because I figured I would be dead from getting smoked all night. Thanks Drill Sergeant Spradlin at Echo 4th of the 30th.

I am quite impressed that that First Sergeant didn't light into that young man. It shows his ultimate control of the situation, knowledge of who he was dealing with, and respect for the legitimate issue of a mistake made. With that said, I am sure First Sergeant said something to him about his personal space, and to have a keen awareness of where he was at, who was in front of him, and a possible solution versus what was witnessed. A teaching moment that was not lost on all involved.

Once as a Marine SGT I was satekd with conducting a rifle inspection on a USN JROTC Sea Cadet unit. The JROTC Div Officer (a high school student) was carrying a sword. Atfer the inspection he did't post to the front properly as was too close to me as he rendered his salute. The tip of the weapon cliped the top button on my uniform. Told my skiiper he alost had to write a very unsual injur report.
